Cool tower!  :wOOt:

PS  I only just spotted this  :lol3::

If you extend that line for a height of Orion to the left, you'll find Triocton Sirius (:fish:), the brightest star of all heavens.

I have nothing useful to say about the sky, except that I haven't been looking at it enough lately.  I will make more of an effort  :ninja:

Too bad the sky was cloudy... :( but there will be another opportunity after 27 days. :) That is the time the Moon needs to revolve around the Earth and is called sidereal month. To be discerned from synodic month which is the time between two full Moons and equals 29 days. The difference between sidereal and synodic month is due to the fact that Earth revolves around the Sun. ;)

@saphira, thank you for the link. :) Hubble Space Telescope has made the best pictures of the universe ever. It is far from being the largest telescope ever made, but nevertheless it has the edge of being above the atmosphere and above the ever increasing light pollution. :-\

Hi folks,

don't forget that there's an eclipse coming up.  :wOOt: You can check out many important information here. There's also a link to some webcasts in case you want to watch via the web.

But watch your eyes, won't you? Don't look at the sun without special filters lest you go blind!

Cheers, and clear skies!

Good morning, folks,

after a convenient breakfast I'll be off to give a radio interview about the upcoming Perseid meteor shower and the lunar eclipse on the 16th of August. The radio station is called "MDR Info", a station under public law, with a focus and news and features, so no stupid questions expected. :)

The best time to watch the Perseids will be the local early hours of the 12th of August, by the way, when the shower approaches its activity peak and when the bright moon has set.

The lunar eclipse runs from 19.35 UT to 22.45 UT which is 21.35 CEDT to 00.45 CEDT. It can only be observed from Europe, Africa and the Western part of Asia.

Cheers!

Markus

Tomorrow I'm going with Xiquet to a little vacations (3 days - 2 nights) to the mountain. I'm sure there'll be a lot more visible the Perseids!!  :yeha: I've read that night is the better to see them... perhaps it depends on the country? Well, tomorrow there won't be Moon, so I expect clear and dark skies (I wisht them CLEAR  :ninja: ), with no atmospheric or light contamination  :nana:

I didn't know about the lunar eclipse... is it total or partial? The time is good... to good to be true! Last time it was at 4 a.m. or similar  :insane:

My queen,

you will see quite a few shooting stars for sure! But remember - only those whose trails point away from Perseus are perseids; all others are just sporadic meteors from no specific source (but nice to see nonetheless ).

The very best time to watch the Perseids this year are the hours before dawn on the 12th of August, no matter where you are. But you'll get to see some by the weekend, especially when you have clear and dark skies in the mountains. :)

The lunar eclipse is a deep partial which leaves only the North of the moon uneclipsed (81% of the lunar diameter will be eclipsed). But that is enough to see the red light inside the shadow of Earth. Hint: Position yourself so that a lamp pole, a tree branch, a bridge or something else blocks the bright, uneclipsed part of the moon. Without that glare you'll find the red light much more striking.

Enjoy that vacation!

Cheers!

I've seen some shooting stars now, but not big ones (I know, not near enough, I guess), but Xiquet has seen one really huge... damn it!! I wasn't looking at that moment  :ninja:

But... I'll see loads of them at the mountain... if weather helps us... if Notessomes keeps clouds far from our place (weather forecast say it will be cloudy  :afaid: ).

O Notessomes, I invoke thy to maintain clear sky and let us see the shooting stars!  :pop:

OK, folks,

the skies look half overcast here. There are more clouds to the East (where the moon will be) than to the West (where the sun is now). I'm pretty optimistic to get a satisfying view of the event, though. It's such a big event that I need utterly clear skies, a few minutes of free sight around the maximum would make me more than happy.

One reason for me to watch, by the way, is that this is the second and last eclipse from the eclipse seaon that brought us the solar eclipse two weeks ago: Then, at the last new moon, we had total solar eclipse. Today, at the following full moon, the heavens are still aligned eclipse-friendly enough to produce at least a deep partial lunar eclipse. So both events are closely related. :)

Now I'm looking forward to the sight of a partly red moon close to the horizon. :wOOt:

Cheers and good luck!

Very cloudy at the morning, now more clear  :evil2:

I'll be in a concert at the time of the eclipse, and it's outdoors so... I have a good chance to be able to look at the moon!!  :yeha:

My queen,

now you owe us two reports: One of the concert, one of the eclipse.

Well, the concert is a free one of a band very known here... Mojinos Escozíos. I can't translate the name...  :evil2: It's a kind of "joke rock"... if I translate the songs... well, I can't

Ok, two reports

Hi folks,

the sky is pretty clear here now, and I'm enjoying a wonderful view of the eclipse. I went to a little park nearby for a better view of the moonrise and the early stages, watched until maximum eclipse from there, and now I'm enjoying the rest of the show from my roofdeck, between lots of plants and a glass of wine.

Cheers!
