Hey folks,

Take a look at the early dawn skies these days. Taurus is there, high in the skies, with Mars nearby. Orion is there, closely followed by Sirius. And brilliant bright you'll find Venus. It must be especially pretty on the 16th of September when the crescent of the waning moon passes Venus at a distance of a few degrees. That must be a wonderful occasion also for dawn photographers who might catch the two of them together in the morning skies. :)

Cheers!

Hey folks,

keep watching the skies for meteors these days, because the Geminids are near their maximum.

Also, there will be a slight lunar eclipse on New Year's Eve, but more on that later.

Cheers!

Hi folks,

don't forget to watch tonight's lunar eclipse - tiny, yet worth seeing. :)

Hey folks,

it's snowing here from thick clouds, so my chances are slim as well. But for those of you with clearer skies: The eclipse is visible from virtually all of Europe, Asia and Africa - bad luck for the Americans this time as only the Northernmost regions get to see anything. The (umbral) eclipse takes place from 19:52:44 CET to 20:52:42 CET with its maximum at 20:23:46 CET with a low 8% of the lunar diameter eclipsed.

See here for more info and chiefly for all the data and graphics.

Cheers!

Thanks a lot, Markus! :)

Now, when it's new year I have a new idea... :D What about to put some date of some near (near I mean until the end of this year or at least half of the 2011) - if there's some - astronomical extraordinarity visible here in Europe and make a meeting on it with extra enlightened lesson about it with
Mgr. AstroDr. Prof. Markus Astronomicus Lunarmodelus Csc.

(Of course, if he agrees on that  :ninja: :ninja: :afaid: :ninja: :ninja: )
But then again, who does.

I saw a big orange moon in the beach of Guerrero (south of mexico) very impressive. I felt it like the sun. Did anyone saw that kind of moon?

Hey folks,

Lava, I've often seen that kind of moon. It always looks like this when it's rising or setting: On the long way the light has to pass through the atmosphere when the moon (or the sun or any other object) is near the horizon the atmosphere filters much of the blue and green light, leaving only the orange and red parts - hence the colour. Additionally, an optical illusion makes us perceive the object much bigger than it really is. Lo and behold: A huge orange or reddish moon, often also distorted by atmospheric effects. That can be pretty impressive! Here's one pic I found in a quick search.

Miri, that's a great idea! I'd love to do that - much like I've done a lecture on Germanic mythology in Budapest before Miskolc. Unfortunately there are no special events visible from Europe in the next year. There will be a total lunar eclipse on the 21st of December, but virtually all over Europe the moon sets before or during totality. :(

The Venus transit in 2012 might be a nice opportunity, though, for this will be the last transit of Venus in this century. But we can also do an NTSMS meeting just like that, without special occasion! :wOOt:

Cheers!

Damn it! Wrong side of the world for the lunar eclipse. Next, there is always a next time.
I'm in for the NTSMS astronomical gathering in 2012! :yeha:

Mhhh... I have to say that, of course, I'm for astronomical or whatever NTSMS gathering... BUT... If nothing dramatically changes, I think I won't be able to make any gathering trip by now :bawl:

Soooo... Has anyone thought about a southern, why-not-astronomical gathering? I mean... you know, we tend to have clear skies... I have the beach very near (at least, there's not too much light when you're looking the vastness of the sea), good temperatures, a fantastic metal-pub near my home, several metal-pubs if you travel to Barcelona (45 min) and so other many fantastic places to visit and enjoy!!!!

Mmh... something to think of, don't you believe?  :evil2:

My queen,

In fact I've been thinking about Spain for the transit of Venus in 2012, but only for a short moment. From Europe only a part of the transit is visible, and in Germany you get to see even more than from Spain. So Middle Europe would be a better choice for that event.

But then again this is 2 1/2 years ahead, so why wait so long? Yes, I'm in for a Spanish NTSMS meeting since I have no big travel plans this year! There are a few conditions, though: If there really is a beach nearby you will all have to go collect shells with me, and if there really is a metal pub nearby you will have to carry me home when I'm too drunk to walk. :ninja:

This, however, deserves a topic of its own. My queen?

Cheers!

Some interesting news on Hubble, check it out here:

It's about discovering primeval  primordial population of compact and ultra-blue galaxies that have never been seen before.
