All around the interent :-) NASA confirmed it - that the rumours are true. So Curiosity found really something amazing but they still want to do all the confirmations. They do not wish to sent big news to the world followed by dementi :-) That's why they say that the discovery will be released in few weeks, when they are sure.

Mmmhhh, these news item hasn't made it to the sites I read regularly, so doubly thanks for the hint. When they're making such a big fuzz about it, only one topic comes to my mind...

Who knows, perhaps they still have to negotiate about the publication of their results with the Martian government?

Cheers!

And the embassy is empty - because everybody's negotiating at a secret site. See, everything fits together! :ninja:

Hey folks,

see today's APOD! :) Nothing spectacular, nothing sci-fi - just a deep photography of a sight that you can all see with your own eyes. But it's a beatiful sight and one that belongs to this very time, as Jupiter will move on soon.

Enjoy and cheers!

I was not sure where to place it but since the topic of the video is clear :D

You have to see it, I really laughed when watching the video. Bunch of students at JSC made a vid and some really famous astronauts joined them etc - it is a parody of gangnam style and really well done

Hey folks,

according to a recent study, scarabs watch the sun resp. the moon for orientation - and if neither is visible, they use the milky way.

Cheers!

That's nice :-) Thanks for sharing, Markus!

Btw, when I am back again in this topic... on Friday, there's a sad anniversary of the space shuttle Columbia's disaster. It happened on 1st of February 2003. I guess that most of you can remember that.
NASA launched a website connected to it - also in a remembrance of other crews - Challenger and Apollo 1.

Oh dear,

I do remember that day but I couldn't have told you the exact date. Yes, it's sad. They took the risk for a greater good - and lost. Makes me wonder how they'd like to be honoured...

The topic is on the media, however. A German TV station has a special space day to remind of them...

Perhaps a good way to honour them is to marvel at the skies? I certainly did so tonight, beholding the splendid winter constellations and bright Jupiter at the Golden Gate.

Cheers despite it all!

Hey folks,

if you're in the Northern hemisphere and if your local weather allows it: Scan the low Western skies after sunset. You might find - right below the moon tonight - the comet PANSTARRS. You might find it with your naked eyes or you might use binoculars for help. It only takes a minute or two, and seeing a comet like that is nothing you get every day.  :wink2:

Best of luck and cheers!

Good luck with the comet, folks! Don't despair if you don't get it tonight - it'll remain visible for a few more weeks, climbing higher and higher in the dusky skies (although getting dimmer at the same time).

I heard the news, Kris: They found chemical compounds required for life in the Martian soil, right? This is exciting, but I'm curious for more details. :)

Cheers!

Me too :) Curiosity's task is far from being finished!  :wOOt:

I do not suppose I might be able to see the comet. It's cloudy here as hell. And it is supposed to be for at least few more days. :(

Darn,

tonight we had a wonderful clear dusk, but I was stuck in a meeting. :mad3: Didn't get to see PANSTARRS, but at least I got to behold a very beautiful, very slender, almost horizontal lunar crescent.

Perhaps I'll get another chance tomorrow?

Cheers!

Before yesterday, I went to visit a friend at work then went to do some big shopping and on my way home it was already dark outside. I could not see the Panstarrs but I saw once again (quite rare in Prague) the heavenly skies at night. :)

It was wonderful. It was about -7°C, but despite that I stood in front of the house about 10 or 15 minutes. My head raised high up watching the stars. I could see my beloved Orion and Pleiades.  And some other things I haven't seen before (at least I do not remember) because the place I used to live had a different world-sides direction (south-north, this building is west-east) so I had it covered by a roof back then.

It was ... simply great. I have no words for that because I really enjoyed the moment. The freezing cold fresh air, and the stars spread on the black milk above my head? :) Amazing. You know, I always feel so peaceful when watching night sky with stars. It's so soothing and keeps me so calm to see that there is The Great Universe out there (and yet I am a part of it on our tiny lil' planet Earth).

I just wanted to share this short moment of joy with you :)
