Title: Recent Purchases
Post by: Sirius13 on May 29, 2007, 08:45:22 pm
Well, there was a topic about this already.

But I can't find it.  :ninja:

And do you know why I can't find it?

Because I fucking-well deleted it.  :tomat:

By accident.

So anyway, Recent Purchases:

Venom - Black Metal (remastered edition, hmmm I need to replace my old vinyl copy of At War With Satan too)
Turisas - The Varangian Way (listening to it right now - it'll take a few listens to appreciate, it's not as instant as the debut)
Ensiferum - Victory Songs (not listened to it yet)

EDIT:  Just ordered At War With Satan by Venom - can't wait to destroy the world with this re-mastered version!

Mommy beat you!  I got that album when it came out in April   :)

Then a few weeks ago, I got an older Dimmu album (it was on sale for $9.99), Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia.

Others I recently got were the new Labyrinth one called 6 Days to Nowhere, and the new one by Russell Allen & Jorn Lande called The Revenge.  I liked the first one, The Battle, better.

Well, I just bought Daath's debut album, The Hinderers.  I've only given it one listen through, so I can't pas judgement on it yet.  First impressions. . . weeeeell. . . Some of the tracks are really good, and pretty catchy.  The guy who does the vocals (Sean Farber) seems to be the limiting factor. . . Sometimes he really fits the song, other times he seems out of place. . . I wish he was a bit more varied.  Musically, the album seems very good.  I mean, like I said, only one listen, but there are some catchy riffs and it's really grinding, well mixed.  I guess the real highlight (or killer, depending on your tastes) is the presence of a synth in some of the songs.  A couple of the songs are almost like Death/Dance fusion.  I, however, do like it.  I think it's a nice combo, kind of like Rob Zombie. . . KIND of.  All in all, decent so far, esp. for a debut album.  Check it out.  Expect a debut though, good album with some major flaws.  I hope the vocalist matures vocally. . . if he does, this could be the next big band. . . IF.

~The (Oh, and Daath's pronounced DOTH, who knew?) Cretin~

I got that one... a month ago? .... it isn't my kind. Somehow, it doesn't grab my attention. I put it on and my mind drifts and after 10-15 minutes I remember that I was playing that CD  . (Un)Fortunately, it seems that I'm one of those who got stock on Dimmu's earlier albums.

Today I got two more CD's:
Rotting Christ --- Sanctus Diavolos & Behemoth --- Zos Kia Cultus
So far I have listened them only once. Sanctus Diavolos is more symphonic and much more atmospheric than their last effort. ... mmm... concerning this, I have to confess that I am a little bit worried. How come that I like so much a band with such a cheesy name as Rotting Christ?
Behemoth's album does kick ... a lot... as usual :evil2:

After not shopping any music for a while I could not hold myself any longer!

Two wonderful albums, Fatal Portrait and Abigail in one:

And my week's joy, after searching everywhere I was able to get this jewel:

I also bought the first release of Sulphure entitled Holy Serpent and their t-shirt

Sulphure is a very underground black metal band from my country. It's so undeground I can't even provide you with a scaned image of their release XD

Enough money spent for today  ;D

Firstly, replaced some vinyl with CD:

Queen - Queen
Queen - Queen II
Queen - Sheer Heart Attack
Queen - A Night At The Opera
Queen - A Day At The Races
Queen - News Of The World
Queen - Jazz
Queen - The Game
Queen - Flash
Queen - Hot Space
Queen - The Works
Queen - A Kind Of Magic
Queen - The Miracle
Queen - Innuendo
Queen - Made In Heaven

Forbidden - Forbidden Evil
Forbidden - Twisted Into Form
Bathory - Hammerheart

Also got myself some new releases, the best one being this - to help me look forward to the new upcoming Death Angel:

Rob Cavestany - Lines On The Road

It's mainly accoustic stuff, like an album of the mellower moments from The Organisation.

Does everyone say it's good?  over here reviews have been around 6.5 - 7.5 out of 10.  ...I think 7.5 is fair.

It's enjoyable in a retro kinda way, good fun but cheesy - exactly what you'd expect from Helloween.  I've been enjoying listening, and I'd say it's as good as anything else they've produced in the last 10 years.  Not a classic, but good nonetheless.

Hi folks,

I just bought Nicholas Lens: Flamma flamma, the Fire Requiem. Someone had mentioned it on the official forum recently, and that reminded me that a friend of mine from Rudolstadt had recommended me that work as well. I just had a short first listening so far, but I'm impressed.

Cheers!

Title: Re: Recent Purchases
Post by: Markus on November 16, 2007, 11:24:52 am
Hey folks,

by now I can say some more about "Flamma Flamma". It's modern music for orchestra, classical vocalists and choir. The pathos is broken every now and then in a nice and humorous way by a small squawking choir of "fireflies". :lol3: The whole work is unusual, but interesting and really great to hear. Not the atonal nuisance we're supposed to consider music today, but pleasant to hear and touching despite all modernity.

Well, and now I don't get the title track out of my head or out of my playlist: "Flamma flamma, ex sole and stellis surrepta".  :firedevil: I feel like setting the town on fire and dancing madly around.

Cheers!

OK, that's what I thought myself after a few listens. People here seem to like that album more than their late releases, and I was wondering why or if I wasn't getting the point... anyway.

Just got Moonspell's Under Satanae. A re-issue of their very first album (Under the Moonspell), old demos, etc. All in one brand new and re-recorded album.
Do you like old Moonspell? Do you think their early stuff deserved a better sound?
Yes?... well, then you MUST have this one!

I have that one but not original. I also heard that they are gonna re-record some songs from Irrelegious and Wolfheart but dunno when cause right now they are working on new album.

Re-recording of Wolfheart and Irreligious songs?  :o These 2 are best albums imho. (next to S/P)  8)
Under Satanae is really good, even though I like more the 'old crappy' sound.  ;D

Yesterday I bought a CD + DVD, against what I use to do... Last time I had bought an original CD was Gothic Kabbalah  :innocent:

It's "Carved in Stone", Rage. One of my favourite groups... perhaps the second one after Therion. And it's not only the CD, but CD and DVD with 2 clips and Waken concert. And with a good price (4 € less than the 20 it costed before). I don't understand why they put it cheaper when it's so new... and good. It's good for my pocket, but makes me thing they don't value them as much as they deserve  :ninja:

My preciooooussssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss  :evil2:

give me all her albums you have please!

I have none, I'm listening on YouTube.

Well, now I have The Book of Secrets, I've just bought it.

The Highwayman (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ixi4jz0Gn4E) and Dante's Prayer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VfLYjV4noC0) are my favourite songs! ^_^ And I like the inscription on the inner side of the booklet:

A good traveller has no fixed plans and is not intent on arriving.

But The Old Ways (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHgl4fZVNi4) is also a great song, what an amazing mixture of instruments and her voice is haunting in that one. I like Celtic music very much. I also like the syncretism of Christianity and Paganism one can find in her music. I might buy that album too. :)

I was (mis)fortunate Tarja had spoiled me with her epic voice and presence so that after her, I find 90% of other female singers boring and uninteresting (regardless of being classically trained or not). :-\ But not Loreena, she is really talented!

Loreena McKennit - An Ancient Muse

The latest album... she is getting more perfect in style with each one! Also the instrumental section is reacher than ever! :wOOt:

Quote
Recorded at Real World Studios and featuring a host of acclaimed musicians, the album proffers a treasure trove of instruments, from harp, hurdy-gurdy and accordion to oud, lyra, kanoun and nyckelharpa (the Scandinavian keyed fiddle).

The song Caravanserai immediately became my favourite song of her, even before I read the booklet where it says that it was written on the way to Konya. I went there two years ago to witness the total solar eclipse! And I also learned that my second favourite song from her, Dante's Prayer, was written in a train across Siberia... I'm supposed to take that train this year in order to witness the next total solar eclipse. How many coincidences... creepy... :ninja:

I also bought her DVD - Live at Alhambra... it is a bomb. The songs sound even better live than in the studio! It is very professionally recorded, the camera zooms those instruments playing at that moment so that one can see and hear them at the same time! Nyckelharpa kicks arse, it is exactly behind Loreena when she plays piano. Also, the camera zooms the fiddler when Loreena sings "when the fiddler plays" in The Mummer's Dance! ;D

And I also bought the latest Ayreon - *checks the tittle* 01011001 ;D

What a bunch of great vocalists on the same album! :wOOt: Hansi just rulez... what a noble sounding voice. Anneke, Floor and Simone too. ^_^ It's interesting that the vocalists got special signs, marking their parts of the lyrics in the booklet! Hansi got the Celtic encircled cross, like that Vibeke used to wear ^_^, Floor got the Greek capital letter omega and Anneke got the heart! I wonder why.... you too wolfshade? :fish:

OHMFG!!!! She sings Bonnie Portmore damn it ....Hail Scotland!!!!

Loreena is infatuated with Celts. She speaks about them before every song on the DVD. Also the booklets are full of stories about Celts and all her journeys are actually motivated by Celts. She wants to visit all the places where the history documented that something involving Celts had happened. Even in Mongolia... She has set to music a lot of Irish poems and sang a lot of traditional Irish songs. Like this one...

Yes, because Kamelot is symphonic metal(:P) and Ensiferum and Eluveitie are not.

I'm also not very fond of Roy Kahn's voice, I think he is the weakest point of the band. But I like their music. ;)

Hi folks,

a CD I've bought some time ago but haven't presented to you yet is "Om Naamah Shivay" by Nina Hagen. Nina Hagen is a rather excentric artist who can be quite shrill, but I love her voice on this one. She does (traditional?) Hindu chants here, with very simple but beautiful melodies. For instance you can hear the Kali-mantra that Dissection have adopted in "Maha Kali", and probably Hagen's version is closer to the original than that of Dissection.

A friend had shown me some of the songs, mainly because of the Kali-mantra, and I liked them so much that I bought the original. If anyone can recommend me some similar albums I'm grateful. :)

Cheers!

Markus

Got myself the deluxe edition with 2 CDs and a DVD, made up as a little book. Very nicely done; the artwork reminds me strongly of "With Oden on our Side" and has nice runic passages. (Which is strange, considering that at least some band members can't read runes. But hey, we love them for the music, not for their reading skills! :lol3:) The music seems to be big fun. :wicking:

Cheers!

Hey Markus, you comment on the rune passages reminds me... Has anyone noticed there is a spelling (?) mistake in the video of "Cry of the Blackbirds"? :lol3: The stage where they are playing has runes on it, if you notice there is a Tiwaz + Hagalaz instead of one Thurisaz rune. :lol3:
And also... Thanks for making me want to buy that album already!

At last! - a couple of my all-time-favourite '80s German thrash releases have been remastered & reissued on CD:
Deathrow - Raging Steel
Deathrow - Satan's Gift

They are ordered and on their way to me!  :yeha:

Also managed to get hold of some other CDs that have eluded me for a while - ones that I've had on vinyl for years, but needed to get on CD:
ARTCH - Another Return To Church Hilll
Hexenhaus - A Tribute To Insanity
Voivod - The Outer Limits

And also been getting hold of some other quality German metal that somehow escaped me in the '80s, most of the back catalogues of:
Mekong Delta (progressive thrash)
Destruction (straight-up thrash)

Mekong Delta are particularly exciting, coz they remind me of the later Deathrow releases, with hints of Pink Floyd-meets-Coroner weirdness thrown in.  :insane:

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Requiem

I saw a recording of this under Herbert von Karajan for less than 6 Euro, so I just bought it. I was curious due to Therion's version of "Dies Irae", anyway. And I must say that so far this piece is indeed my favourite from the whole requiem. The classical version is powerful and dark, too, although you hear more the fear of the wrath ("What trembling will there be on the day of wrath!") in the original but more of the wrath itself in the cover.

Cheers!

G.F. Handel: Messiah

This was the first time I bought an MP3 online. :nosweat: Usually I buy the CD and then create my own MP3 for taking it along in my player. But now I just needed to hear this amazing music again and had neither my MP3s of it nor a CD-drive at hand, so I just bought another version of it online. It's labeled "The English Concert" and does sound fine. It has some adornments in the vocal lines which don't sound in place to me, but this version of "The people that walked" may well become my favourite one - it's taken slower and darker here.

Cheers!

Wagner: Das Rheingold, conducted by Karajan

Wagner was pursuing me... first I discovered an animated short version of "Rheingold", then the next day I had several customers from Bayreuth. I took that as a sign to get some genuine Wagner (also after liking some of the Wagner pieces from Miskolc a lot) and surfed straight to Amazon. Today the package arrived, and I'm giving it a first spin. I'm somewhere between "Umm... hrrrmmm..." and "Umm... wow!!", presumably slowly drifting towards the latter.

Cheers!

I haven´t bought anything, but i got very interesting music from the internet. I´m making a research of the beggining of heavy rock, and I´ve downloading a lot of albums from the 68 to-74 to analize the sounds. This albums are very powerful:

Budgie - Never turn your back on a friend (this album has a song called Breadfan, a song which metallica made a cover in the garage inc album)
Frank Zappa - Hot rats (a brilliant jam album full of amazing blues guitar with heavy sounds and excellent arrangment of drum, bass, strings, brass, etc)
Black Widow - Sacrifice (the first band that made a satanic rock show like a ritual. Their music is more thant excellent, is very very powerful and as complex as simple. They mix a lot of folk music with chill out rock).

I also have been listening to heavy psychedellic rock from this era (retro bands) with satanic themes and the results are extraordinary. Fucking brilliant bands:
The devil´s blood - The time of no time evermore (this is a combination of Iron Maiden early style, Steppenwolf Born to be wild rythms, psychedellic female voices like Jefferson Airplane and shocking blues mixed with may be Ian Gillan high notes, Lynyrd Skynyrd guitar solos style, with dark rock ambients like Dissection´s Reinkaos)
Blood Ceremony - Blood Ceremony (folk tunes with flute, heavy doom guitars like Black Sabbath´s Master of reality and female vocals)

Europe (specifically Spain) became Metal shopping ground for me... So I got...

Epica's "Divine Conspiracy" and "Classical Conspiracy"
Slayer's "South of Heaven"
The special edition of Finntroll's "Nifelvind"
Tool's "Lateralus"
An Iron Maiden t-shirt re-printed from their "Number of the Beast" tour
A Led Zeppelin t-shirt
And since my old MP3 died after 3 faithful years, I bought a new one - same brand, different model, but all compatible with the stuff I had for the previous player.

Carmina Burana by Carl Orff.

I'm going to a performance of this where two friends of mine sing in the choir, so I want to listen to it to it first. I can enjoy concerts better when I know the music that's being played or sung. Title: Re: Recent Purchases
Post by: Markus on September 13, 2010, 10:35:02 pm
Hey folks,

I haven't found the leisure so far to listen to all of it, but I'm already very fond of the second song "Fortune plango vulnera". It kept playing in my head all day long:

Rex sedet in vertice - (Ba-da ba ba!)
Caveat ruinam! (Ba-da ba ba! Ba-da ba ba!)
Nam sub axe legimus (Ba-da ba ba!)
Hecubam reginam. (Ba-da ba ba! Ba-da ba ba!) :afaid:  :evil2:

It's a pity that Therion did not cover this one instead of "O Fortuna": It's equally intense, has wide dynamic range, and the "Ba-da ba ba!" is perfect for metalising. Plus it's less known and hence a better choice to educate us fans and to show off one's knowledge of "classical" music.  :lol3:

Cheers!

Title: Re: Recent Purchases

Hey folks,

at last I've given the whole thing a spin, and I do like it! I must admit, though, that I don't like all pieces equally. Some in the second part, as "Chramer, gip die varwe mir" sound tedious to me, at times even annoying with those over-simplistic melody and that high-pitched choir. But overall I like the Carmina; I keep playing "Fortune plango vulnera" up and down. and I'm sure that at a second or third listening of the whole work I'll discover a few more treasures.

The old German is not understandable for me, Lucy. In "Chramer, gip..." I can still guess it very easily, but others are too far from modern German for me to get the gist.

Cheers!

Markus

Title: Re: Recent Purchases

The new Amon Amarth is better than I expected. Not saying I had low expectations or anything, but I didn't expect them finally adding some new spices to the mix (like clean tones); I guess it was bound to happen, since following the exact same formula since "Fate of Norns" was probably getting tiresome.
The new Dream Theater is as complex as any of their previous albums, but it unfortunately wasn't as great as their previous album. It also feels like something is missing, something indescribable that I'm guessing is the Mike Portnoy element. However, it is still a solid release, and it's got its good moments.

Amon Amarth's new album sounds much like all their stuff since 2003; there's songs here and there however that do go into different directions, by adding clean (ie. no distortion effects) guitar tones and even one where they add keyboards; stuff which you rarely see in Death Metal (unless you're Opeth).

As for Dream Theater... Well, the Metropolis concept album was really neat. I personally think their best album is either "Images and Words" or "Awake".

I see, Jorge. Perhaps as in "album I should be getting"?

Myself, I've just bought an opera ticket. I told you that there's a staging of the Ring in my home town. They started last year with the Rheingold and now the second opera had it's premiere. But luckily there's another performance of the Rheingold, and I'm going there. Contacted the opera office by mail and they promised to sell me a ticket online but they never did, so yesterday I stopped at a ticket shop in the city and bought one in the highest category. :wOOt:

Cheers!

Now I have it for sale, cause I'm on the guest list from Leprous as a photographer ;)

Congrats, Agnes! And Jorge, I'm glad you like your purchase.

The last music-related item I bought is an opera ticket for "Rheingold". Tomorrow I'll put myself in a suite and enjoy some Wagner live. :wOOt: :afaid: Too bad that nobody wanted to come with me - Wagner isn't everybody's cup of tea - but on the other side this allowed me to get one of the best tickets. :wOOt:

Unfortunately I didn't take the time to listen to a recording of the opera thoroughly. Ah, what the heck, then I'll discover the opera as I'm watching it for the first time, just as they did in the old days.

Cheers!

Markus

Melechesh's "The Epigenesis".

Oh yes, this one is brutal but it rules! I like Amon Amarth's album too, can't wait for the concert in 2 weeks.

I want to buy Orphaned Land's DVD that was released recently but I have more important things to spend money on (that can't wait, the DVD can  :P) with my limited budget.

Offy... I just ordered the Deluxe version of the OL DVD... I had to think hard about it, as this version is really expensive but... I almost don't expend in music. If I don't pay for a Orphaned Land (or Therion, of course!), who will I expend money with?  :evil2:

Now I'm poorer, but when I'll receive the package, I'll be infinitely happiest!  :wOOt:

I've seen this but it's WAY TOO EXPENSIVE for me right now so I envy you on that. Please take pictures of it when you get it so I can see is it really worth the money  :P

Hey folks,

Luth, that looks great! How much was it? Anyway, you're right - you get something for your money, and you support the band, so  You'll have to tell us how you like it, once it's arrived. :)

OFFY, that's smart. First things first! But you're going to Amon Amarth? Congrats, buddy! Enjoy it, bang your head off, take a few of the other heads as a trophy - and then tell us about the show. Yeah, a set list would be nice. :)

Cheers!

Markus

Markus, this package costs 60 €. Really really expensive... It includes:

The Road To Or-Shalem
- Deluxe Hardback Book Edition -
2 DVD + Audio CD + 64 pages booklet

There is the 33 € pack:

The Road To Or-Shalem
- Limited Edition Double DVD + Audio CD -

And, finally, the 27 € pack:

The Road To Or-Shalem
- Standard Double DVD -

I suppose the book is the great difference... but how can't I obtain the book? I MUST have it...  :spock:

I bought an album from Obscura, specifically "Cosmogensis". Straight from the hands of the band members too.
Pretty cool. :ninja:

It's Technical Death Metal. I saw the guys live and sort of had to buy an album because I enjoyed their performance that much.
And the album is pretty good. Lots of good bass soloing.

"Mabool", from Orphaned Land. I still had not the "legal" CD, and yesterday I bought it in the concert. This way I was able to introduce myself to Nathalie, the administrator of the Orphaned Disciple, who was selling the merchandising. Nice to have met her!

What's Orphaned Land Disciple? Something like Therion Society. What did you two talk about?

Yes, it's the fanclub. I don't enter too often... as far as I know, you don't need any membership, and it has no forum. You can enter and see some news from the band in different languages, videos (from concerts, interviews, previews...).

You can enter in The Orphaned Disciples. (http://www.orphaned-disciples.org/)

How funny Kris, I picked up the 2CD special edition in Frankfurt today while in transit between my flights.

Also, the other day I bought Karl Sanders' Saurian Exorcisms and Tesseract's One
