Title: Nice weather, isn't it?
Post by: Markus on January 10, 2010, 12:21:29 am
Hey folks,

the weather is the classical topic for meaningless small talk, but I find it seriously interesting. I love following the weather conditions and observing weather phenomena. In a way I like almost all kinds of weather - sunny summer days, fog in the autumn, rain and thunderstorms, snow and ice. So let me start this topic for an exchange about our weather. :wOOt:

Right now we have Daisy - a low that's bringing quite a bit of snow and wind. There have been warnings of severe weather and even recommendations to stockpile food, drinking water, candles and electric torches. I wonder what all the fuss is about - isn't this simply the weather that should be in this region at this time of the year? Isn't this just one normal Middle-European winter after so many too warm ones?

What is it like in your place? Luth, I heard on the news that there is unusually much snow in the North of Spain. Are you affected?

Cheers!

Hi Markus!

I feel like in the lift trying to talk with some neighbour  :lol3:

-Oh, hello!
-Hello...
-...
-Cold weather, isn't it?
-Yup, pretty cold. That's weather changing, y'know...
-...mmmh... Yep, sure...

 :lol3:

Yes, you heard well: we have an uncommon cold and snowy weather. We are having snow at really low height above sea level... In fact, yesterday I was able to touch the snow, but not because I saw it fall: some cars coming from very near had it on their bonnet; the little mountains near us (very near, and low: perhaps 100 meters high?) were a little white, where the cars came from, I suppose. I've heard that today it can snow even lower, but I don't think it will happen here. Snow or not, temperatures are really low, near 0º, what is pretty unusual here. I prefer not to imagine in the mountains  Apart from my town, almost all Catalonia (except really low height) is white now, and almost all North of Spain. Besides that, in Andalusia region (South of Spain) they have several heavy rains, and they had a lot of floods

Well, I've heard in London have been a lot of problems because of snow too, with a looot of flight cancellations and delays... What about other countries?

Oh Regina Frigoris,

there were pics in the news of Spanish shores under snow. So I guess not even you are safe from the white stuff. :afaid:

Cheers!

Right now we have a nice weather. It is a sunny day but with cold sea wind. I think we are in 18 or 20 c degrees.

Dear "neighbours" and far-away friends,

here we have a bit of crazy weather. A week ago (?) we had 35-40 degrees of difference between 2-3 days. I'm not used to have a headache because of weather changes, but that was too much even for me. :(

Apart from that, I'm fine with this weather. I have to wear much more clothes, but I like snow, and I think I've made peace also with coldness. (Thanks to my tile stove, for example.) The temperature goes like between -10 and +5 degrees, after its mood. :wink2: No wind usually, and today we have a bright sunshine. Sometimes we have mist, that I enjoy very much, and a few days ago I could see some mist-spots on the road that I've never seen before - it was fun to catch tiny little clouds near to the ground. :)

Oh, your weather changes really swiftly!!!!
And as for my land, the frost attacks with a new stroke! Today now (noticing that the sun set about 4 hours ago) it's being -22 deg.C.

Over here all the beautiful snow is thawing. :bawl: But we might get some more cold days soon...

Sorry for delayed response (delay not caused by snow  :fish:) - I was in London for much of last week and there were travel problems on the trains as well as with flights.  However by the time I needed to leave London all was ok again.  Much of the snow across the country has now melted, but I believe more is forecast for later this week...

There was plenty of snow around during our London trip, but we all battled the cold with plenty of warming spirits  :drunk:

 * Looks out of the window * ....  :wOOt:
Weather here: nice, warm and cloudless.

Weather here last week: cold, gray, and rainy. There was a lot of snow in the mountains surrounding the city, and now the view of the volcanoes is quiet something! (On the other hand, a few people living of those mountains died frozen, which is more than something sad  :'( )

I touched snow three weeks ago... from a car coming from the nearby hills! Those were the most cold days for long time here, and it snowed a little in low heights. Beside that, I've lived 4 or 5 little snowing days in my live... very rare, but not impossible to happen!  :insane:

6°C this morning. Around 12°C when I got back home from school.

Hi folks,

over here the winter is still lingering on, and right now a little bit of new snow is falling. Almost six weeks of frost and snow... it's great to have a real winter after all those un-winters  we had in the past years. But now I'm also looking forward to the next spring. :)

Cheers!

Hy!
Here is quite a lot of snow right now.. last two days were very generous with it. Even my train to Ljubljana last night had one hour of delay because of bad weather condition. The roads are very bad and dangerous, but that's not the snows fault, it's human because they don't do their job! Anyway it's not very cold, just -2 degrees.

I only complain when I'm the one driving because it's very tiring in such weather to get anywhere.

This is the winter of my childhood! I like it like this! This is how winter should look like!  :yeha:

We got fresh snow during the night also :) I like it a lot... tough I miss fresh air. It's very smoggy here - as always in Prague during the winter :( but it causes me migrenes... which is annoying so I wish it would be sunny with no cloud on the sky.... fresh air.... sun. It's also good because when I am at work and it's nicer weather - people are less unpleasant also.  -_-

Yeah well, we are boiling here in Brazil, that's the appropriate expression. Some places in Rio de Janeiro the termic sensation gets above 50 Celsius. Can you imagine that? There was a day that RJ earned the title of second warmest place on Earth, only losing for a African city.

Weird things going on here...

A round bright thingy has appeared in the sky. It seems like a huge floodlight and is far too bright to look at - you can see its bright light all over the city. :afaid:

I have heard ancient tales about a phenomenon like this, but I've never thought they could be true! (Well, "never" is exaggerated, but for the past few months we had virtually no sunshine here).

Hi folks,

right now it is creepily stormy here: Torn clouds, eerily lit by the full moon, are racing over the sky, driven by the storm "Xynthia". On my roofdeck a few plants have been blown over, and the plastic table is lying upside-down besides its usual place. :afaid:

Cheers, anyway!

Title: Re: Nice weather, isn't it?
Post by: Luth on February 28, 2010, 11:08:48 pm
Hi Markus,

Xynthya has already passed by Spain, although not in Catalonia. It has struck the Atlantic coast (Galicia and Euskadi, as far as I know), and it has been very powerful, with wind "blows" of 250 km/h the heaviest

I wish that storm will go away fast and leave the less injuries possible  -_-
Title: Re: Nice weather, isn't it?
Post by: Markus on March 01, 2010, 09:57:38 am
Well, I really can't complain as Xynthia had already lost much power when it arrived here. Compared to what happened in Western Europe - over 50 deaths and lots of material damage - we were really spared here; no serious damage as far as I can tell.

Cheers!

Markus
Title: Re: Nice weather, isn't it?

mmmm.... those storms are becoming more frequent in Europe. I still remember the last year one :afaid: ... and from the wind speeds Luth mentions I must conclude that that one was nothing compared to Xynthia.
Anyway, so far the apocalypse-2010 counts say: Haiti, Chile, Western Europe, Taiwan ... man, this is getting nasty.

Oh guys, hope nothing bad happens to you due to that nasty storm...
In Kuwait, we had a beautiful yellow/orange day today. Literally, it looked beautiful to have such a huge dust cloud all over. Sure, it got nasty by entering into rooms and leaving its trail all over town after a while, but the sight of it was amazing. Should have taken pictures. :ninja:

Well... I'm sure that some of you would think this is only a tiny little snowy day, but  in Barcelona, when it really rarely snows, and when it does it is so weak it hardly turns any road white...

Yesterday I was working, luckily in a big-windowed office, so we could see all the snow since the beginning. It started to rain first, and after some rain some little snowflake started to fall. But gound was wet and weather was not so cold, so it lasted a lot of time... hours, until it started to lie. It did at 15h aprox., when snow was falling more and more heavily. A lot of people in the office decided to go home earlier, as we supposed Barcelona is not used to snow and we could have problems with trains and cars. Of course, we had! No train was leaving the station except two which had a very short distance to travel. Perhaps you can remember I work in Barcelona but live in Calella, at 60 km... Luckily for me, Xiquet was trapped in Barcelona too (he works in another city near Barcelona, and he went out from there with great difficulties, by car, but he had to leave the car in Barcelona as it was impossible to drive!). So, we together booked a hotel for a single night, at 100 m from my work  :ninja:

Today trains worked again, but as the tracks of the train are by the coast, and we have high waves due to the wind, I lasted more than 2h before arriving home, instead the 1h15min it use to last. Nice day  :disgust:

Well... This is the bad part. The good part is that I was walking (and trying not to fall) in a heavy snow storm (heavy for us, I'm aware!), what I almost enjoyed if not for my wet and frozen feet toes. And I saw a fantastic and hard to see again view of Barcelona. You must think we are a coast city and it only snows every 3 or 4 years, or less, and never so hard. Infrastructures are simply not prepared! All city was isolated because you could use no train, no car, no bus... even it was really difficult to use mobile phone

Some pictures taken from internet. I took some with my mobile camera, but the quality is so bad it even looks as a less snowy day

Hey Luth,

that must have been quite an event for you!

I understand that this casts a towns into chaos that is not used to snow at all - quite to the contrary of our towns here who fell into chaos, too, due to a winter you have to consider quite normal, just because our towns are becoming too lazy to prepare for normal winters. But for you this is something very unusual.

I think you did the right thing and made the best of it. :)

Cheers!

Hey folks,

yesterday we had classical April weather with clouds, showers and sunny gaps in between. In the afternoon I got into an incredibly intense shower of sleet - I was soaking wet within a minute or so, and at the top time it was getting hard to see anything due to the urge to protect my eyes but also due to the veils of rain.

But in the evening I was rewarded with some beautiful sights as the setting sun shone across the shower-landscape over my city. There was a veil of rain to the Northwest which was lighted in yellow, almost golden colour by the sun, and to the East there were parts of a double-rainbow visible. All of that changed quite quickly, within minutes.

Wish it was a bit warmer, though, so my plants can finally burst into leaf.

Cheers!

I've seen it before, but in this case it was like a huge cloud of sand was covering the city. It was dark! All I could see outside my window was the palm tree in front of it wiggling like crazy to the wind. And then I heard thunder, saw a bright spot in the sand cloud and heard thunder again. And then I noticed there was a tiny bit of rain coming down. I later found out it was quite a bit of rain, which actually managed to flood (just a bit) the little backyard that my house and our neighbors' house shares.

About two hours and a half later, now, it's all sunny and nice again.

Like Markus told us some time before, something really frightening happened. A big, bright, hot round thing had appeared on the skies!!!  :afaid:

It seems we're getting more and more English weather... We have no week without one, two, three... five raining days! I think this following summer won't have the drought problem... It's also strange that, 2 or 3 weeks ago we had two really hot days, when I had to wear sleevless shirts, and these previous days I even had cold with two-three thin cloth layers. Weather is CRAZY!  :fish: (not to speak about the South of Spain, in Andalucia, where they tend to have terrible hot and dry weather, and this year they have more floods than in all their life  :afaid: ).

Should I tell you our current temperature?
Well, it's dark, so current temperature must be somewhere around 35 C. It's been sunny today, so I'm pretty sure that during the daytime, temperatures probably reached somewhere near 50 C. [url=http://www.smiley-faces.o

Dear Miri,

I'm not complaining because I promised myself not to complain over our heat again when I experienced the conditions in summer in Shanghai last year. But then again I admit that I'll be glad when this heat is over.

You know, for me it's only inconvenient, but for children, sick or old people it can become actually dangerous. That's why I hate the cheap weather-reports that are besides themselves with joy when it gets hot. The hotter it gets, the louder they cheer. :disgust: I prefer those reports that say "Well, it's nice for the beach, but..."

Anyway, seems we'll have to live with this heat for a few more weeks. When this kind of weather is established at this time of the year it's often very stable. So let's make the best of it!

Cheers!

Markus

I myself hate the people around here who say that I am stupid or crazy cause I hate hot weather. Fine, they like it... me not. I don't tell them also, that they are being stupid cause they like this weather.
And actually - as You mentioned - I am one of those sick people (have heart problems) so this weather causes me much stress. :/

"Well, it's nice for the beach, but..."

That is so true. I have luck to be living by the sea so I can go to the beach. But staying at home during summer time is so horrible, so boring..

In general I love summer cause it is usually the best time of year for me. I can go to so many places with friends, go to beaches, go out without freezing, a lot of people in town, a lot of events during summer time. At winter my town is dead. Oh and that strange feeling in the air (summernight city)

There's nothing wrong about that :) But I think that the weather conditions are different in Budapest than here in Prg. As far as I remember the air was more Mediterranean. Which is easier to bear :)

I hope You will enjoy this weather fully :) Cause we got clouds today - the sun is hidden - I think it's that stuff Markus was posting about yesterday evening. Usually we get weather from Northwest.

Damn it! I hate humidity. I thought living in the sea has only one bad thing: humidity. I also thought it would be a good idea to travel to a warmer, but drier place, like the dessert. I simply can't imagine 50º with humidity. Death is preferable  :afaid:

Btw... One, you'll have a nice temperature here... only 27º, according to the Barcelona's web. Today we had 31º (but in the sun, at midday, it was, to me, killingly hot).

You'll enjoy the low temperatures  :disgust:

Nah, seriously: I don't think it's about Zodiacs. It's just that I feel more alive. And I don't have to wear those tons of clothes. The few clothes people wear are very colourful. I can wet my head any time and look like a mad woman. I can leave all doors and windows open. These are some of the things I love about summer heat. :)

Over here we had some rain and a little bit of thunder and lightning, but it was pretty calm. Well, the rain is highly welcome as the earth here is getting too dry.

+39?? I heard about +35, but I see it's worse  :afaid:

How can it be? In Barcelona it's not hard to reach +35 (with a lot of humidity, which turns out to feel like a lot more), and in the south of Spain (Andalucía...) +40 is terribly usual. But... they are used to. I will never travel to the south on Summer for that reason. Now, I won't be able to travel to the very north for the same reason?  :afaid:

Hey folks,

over here it's pretty cool for the season - less than 20°C - and rainy, but with sunnier patches in between. That led to some beautiful sights last evening. There were huge cumuli towering in the distance, dark, but their sides lit by the setting sun. There was a high double-rainbow which was high as a rainbow can get because the sun was setting. And there was that amazing diffuse yellow light you get when a low sun shines into a rainshower. Oh, you should have seen that!

Cheers!

Double rainbow - yeeesss.... I've seen this first time in my life this summer after some really heavy storms (hails etc) during the day time - then it appeared and it was fantastic cause the colours looked so bright on the dark backround.

Enjoy it Markus!  :wink2:

It may have been fantastic, Markus! I would like to be in Germany now! Just yesterday, in Barcelona we had the hottest day perhaps for 200 years or more... 40º in some parts of the city, with a terrible African wind (not breeze, not: wind). In my way from work to train, more than 10 minutes, at 15.30, I thought I would faint...  :afaid:  Luckily in Calella the wind was not and temperatures were a little lower. But terrible day yesterday  :afaid:

What had happened? World become crazy, when in Moscow there are almost 40º for several weeks, in Germany there's a cool day and in Barcelona we have a high temperature record over 200 years or more  :insane:

We got a wonderful weather today (and yesterday too). It's not hot, but it's not cold and sun is shining, clear blue sky and near some forests and pastures nice fresh air. This is for me the best weather. Wish it was weather and temperature like this whole summer  :roll-eyes:

I took a walk to the nearest water dam - It's called Hostivař reservoir and it's supposed to be a bathing place in summer but in last decade it suffers a lot from anabaena/cyanophytes which are of course bad too people. It's always the first reservoir in Prague to be closed cause of this every summer.
Well I came there and found out they are emitting the water - draining the reservoir. So I even did not take any pics of it - and I am not sure I would do even if it was full of water. It's really filthy water usually.
But I took a walk around in the so called "forest park" Hostivař and "forest park" Háje. It was very nice and I took only 2 pics.

I met a lot of animals I haven't seen since ages (some of them never):
 - red squirrel
 - black squirrel
 - Tettigoniidae - some of the grasshoppers :) I don't see them since my early childhood. They completely disappeared from the city
 - for first time in my life I saw a bird from the Piciformes - woodpeckers :) I think it might be this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Spotted_Woodpecker (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Spotted_Woodpecker) :)

I also met one mushroom I haven't seen since my early childhood. Its smell I can recognize from miles :D - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phallus_impudicus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phallus_impudicus)

Here are two pics from my way:

Hey Kris,

we have the same lovely weather over here, but you're making better use of it - I'm busy with my apartment today and I'll be back in the office tomorrow.  ::)

Lovely pics! I'm glad you enjoyed your excursion this much.

Burgundy snails and woodpeckers also occur in our garden; the latter like to use one of my favourite trees - a robinia that we grew from a seed - as a woodpecker's smithy. I haven't found any proper translation of the German term "Spechtschmiede", but I hope you know what I mean: A place where the woodpecker fixes, for instance, a pine-cone in order to peck out the seeds. The branchings of the robinia seem to have just the right angle for that. :)

Woodpeckers even live here in town as this is - despite the ugly architecture - a rather green part of the city.

Cheers!

Oh BTW, something else I love about this weather: It seems to intensify the colours of the plants. Apples, for instance, need cool nights and sunny days in order to get intensely red. I think I've read somewhere that this weather also intensifies the autumn colours of the leaves. Finally I'm convinced that late summer sunshine makes flowers more intense. Ooohh, the red of a rose in late summer sunshine! The velvet dark red of "chocolate flowers" and the red of my dahlia which had a shrill purplish hue in summer and which has turned my favourite red now!

Cheers!

Thank You Markus, indeed seems that Germany is in better environmental state than CZ. Woodpeckers becomes rather uncommon here. And all the animals I use to meet. For me when I meet them all of sudden - I realize "dear G-d, I haven't seen this animal since ages and I even didn't notice" but when I notice I miss their sounds and such a lot.

Glad to hear you're fine so far, Loke!

A real hurricane must be awful indeed. I think we Europeans can't really imagine what this must be like.

Over here it's been raining for days now. This is going in many people's nerves but not on mine. I've never understood how one can let bad weather get on one's mood. It's getting a bit dangerous, though; the great amount of rain causes high water in some brooks and small rivers and it also fills some basements, but this is far from being really catastrophic weather.

Cheers!

Hey folks,

it's the first frosty night in my city, the first time I see puddles frozen. The next days are going to get even colder - frosty days are coming up for the weekend - and we might even get some snow. :yeha:

I brought in the not-hardy plants from my roof-deck, so I demand frost now - so I didn't bring them in in vain. :ninja:

Hell Nifel and cheers!

Here it's "colder than a ticket-taker's smile in the Ivar theater on a Saturday night". Frost cometh--- :looks out the window: Correction, frost cameth. The weather forecast promises snow in the next few days.

I like traveling while the scenery (and, more often than not, my chosen method of transport) is snowbound. Or if there's at least a bit of snow in the air. Since I plan to hit the road tomorrow at some point, I'm hoping to be caught in a blizzard or at least slip on some ice :hop:

Snow's lovely, but slush isn't. As a general rule.

Thus, at least, spake this unit you call Nighthawk.

There it was, in our lovely Croatian capital, this Nighthawk-unit. Twas waiting for bus no. 234, which makes its rounds every 25 minutes, except when it doesn't. Apparently, snow is a bus-deterrent. The bus was either a bit late or time melted as the unit Nighthawk's circuits froze. All it remembers is the temperature dropping, the wind scatting Jethro Tull's "Dogs in the Midwinter" and the first few flakes earnestly kamikaze-ing to the ground.

The rest is 01110011011010010110110001100101011011100110001101100101.

Today we're having the perfect winter day. :) There's a thick cover of snow, but the skies are clear and the sun is shining. Large flat ice crystals have formed on trees, shrubs and herbs, thin, triangular plates about 1cm long. The sun glints off these plates when the angle is correct, so when you walk around the landscape is sparkling. :)

Ok, we had almost-summer weather not long ago (do you remember, Markus, Lucy?). A few time after the NTSMS party departure it arrived the full-winter weather... to the point that we were at -1º in Barcelona, and snowing only at 300 meters high  (very very mid-winter temperature). Now, we have really mild weather again. And the forecast says that full winter temperatures are coming again.

we've had thawing for several days now; today it was +10°C and warmer - plus rainy. There is heavy high water in some parts of Germany, including my home town. :( Luckily my home is not affected, but I can only hope that the planetarium will get out of this undamaged.

It did a lot of damage and even started to threaten my place slightly, but luckily I was spared. The planetarium was struck worse, but it will re-open next week. :nosweat:

Now we have a mild cold. I wonder if the winter will be back once more or if spring is about to come up.

Actually, I was wondering the same. On the 2nd February the bears came out from the cave, and since the sun wasn't shining, they didn't go back to sleep (this is a cute tradition, I don't know whether you have it too?) so spring-time should approach... I keep my fingers crossed for that.

Well, we've had some decent winter this year and right now it's around 0°C instead of nicely frosty and snowy, so we might as well go for spring soon. :lol3: On my roofdeck the leek is starting to grow and the first shrubs have swelling buds that are turning green, :wOOt: so they believe spring to be just around the corner, too.

The winter is back after a few days of pure springtime.. :(

any of you experienced in winter thunderstorms...with lightnings and stuff? I know its a quite rare phenomena but this year we had 2... well...one while it was snowing and it was nothing spectacular, just managed to notice some lightnings and a bit of a thunder, but one was big , probably because it was in a week with highly unusual temperatures for this time of the year.

Can't wait for the spring..i love the weather then.

The weather is whacked. Over the past two weeks or three we've been getting rain and sandstorms one following the other.
Biggest one was about two weeks ago, looked somewhat like this:

That's terrible. I cannot really imagine sandstorms... do the people go to work? They can't really breath don't they? What about the air conditioning? Usually it would break cause the little tiny parts of the sand would screw it up... How do they protect it?
Title: Re: Nice weather, isn't it?

Whew, that's one sandstorm, Jorge!

Is that a view from your place or was it taken somewhere else? Anyway, it's an impressive moment with one skyscraper still in front of the sand with others engulfed already.

Not much damage done? Is that a common phenomenon down there? How do people deal with it? Does everyday life go on or do the sand storms stop traffic?

Over here it's been quite windy, too. There was a kind of sandstorm in the Northern part of Germany, caused by strong winds blowing over barren, dry fields. As the sand crossed a highway it blocked the view so badly that a deadly mass crash happened...

Best regards

Markus

That's from some place else.
Funnily, while the storm occurred, I was enjoying an awesome afternoon nap.
And sandstorms are common, but none of that magnitude. Either way, all it did was filling the entire place with (more) sand.

In the past few days we've had a really windy weather, and guess what it brought combined with many weeks of absolutely no rain - sandstorms! I guess Markus can confirm th too, because I've seen the news about the terrible car accident on a German highway. It caused similiar problems here as well, but luckily no such big accidents. But we're definitely not prepared for such conditions, it prolly would have been totally ordinary in more sandy places.

It was really surprising, these happen in like every ten years. I instantly had Jorge's picture in my mind when I've heard about it, NTSMS is now in my head all the time. :lol3:

no more sandstorms here, no thunderstorms or any other dramatic weather phenomena. Just clear blue skies, sunny days, a light breeze for several weeks now. Pleasant weather to be outdoors - but it's becoming a serious threat to agriculture and all that is green in general. Luckily we have the chance to get at least some rain by Wednesday or Thursday.

Cheers!

Oh, You would not believe what a STORM it was during the night! Absolutely awesome!  I had to switch all electricity...

The lightnings were so strong that only when I hide into the room without windows with closed door I could not see it, otherwise, I could use curtains, hands, pillow and still when there was a flash of light it still felt like..

After each lightning I was very desorianted and such. And thunders made shake the things in flat - my lungs also!! Oh, that was so pretty Seems Thor didn't get his mead for a long time already  :afaid: anywhere  :verymad:

Good idea, Kris, but there's not nearly enough space. Also it would make them miss a lot of sunlight, so all I do is to make sure they don't get blown off the roof-deck - and call on the Vanir that they may spare me any hail.

Kris, that reminds me of the Eiapopeia or whatever the thingy was called whcih blew up last year, stopping European aviation for several days. Not that I missed the planes in the sky, but that was pretty bad for all those who were dependent on planes.

And the summer is only beginning... Jorge, you should find out how to appease the local weather gods - or relocate somewhere less furnacy.

Kris, I've read the same - that this eruption is not likely to impact traffic as much as the Eia-thingy last year. Probably nobody would even notice another Icelandic volcano burping if it were not for last year's pause in aviation.

Cheers!

When I was going home from my studies the sun was shining and it was warm enough. But then I stopped to make a call, and at this moment suddenly came a lot of grey clouds and the sun disappeared, and the wind started blowing with such speed that I fell on my knees! I stood up and ran to the underground. But after 15-17 minutes when I went out of it the sun appeared again and there was a very-very bright rainbow )))

We had wonderful summer weather here recently, warm lots of sun, occasionally some rain or thunderstorm and all the time some refreshing wind. That weather made wonderful flowers bloom, iris and peonies and the first roses...

Heat wave?

Sorry, we are just watching a series with my bf - called "Castle" and there is a long story about it... it is about writer Richard Castle who joins police detective Kate Beckett during solving cases and he uses her as inspiration for his book character - he bases the book character Nikki Heat on Kate Beckett. And he writes - in that tv serie - a book called Heat Wave. But seems fans were so curious about it that someone (dunno who - I guess that the scenarist of the series?) had to really write the book!!! So it was released like that "Heat Wave" by Rick Castle. And I just had to laugh over the "heat wave" You wrote.

OMCD, what a thunderstorm!

At first there was light rain for quite some time, but then it picked up dramatically. I used to think that rains falls down from the sky, but this rain was going from left to right. Luckily the storm didn't do much damage on my roofdeck as far as I can tell now in the dark. The rain was so dense that you couldn't see further than 50-100 meters, I estimate. At least the nearby town was hidden behind the curtain of water.

There was also some lightning, but you could see only the nearest bolts directly - the rest were only flashes. But there were nearby bolts, sometimes crashing their sharp thunder on us within fractions of a second. Really heavy, and I was glad I wasn't outdoors at that time.

It vanished as fast as it had come, and an hour later we were enjoying some late sunshine again.

Cheers!

Hey folks,

what a thunderstorm that was! For ten or more minutes it seemed that not a single second passed without at least one flash of lightning... Scarily heavy gusts of winds drove insane amounts of water through the air while the trees were bending. That was really intense...

...and it followed a day with a great and very moist heat with some heavy thunderstorms in the morning, too. Then it was sunny (and jungle-hot!) in the afternoon, and now this.

Cheers!

Another classical summer storm has just passed...

About 20 minutes ago a loud swoosh outdoors caught my attention. I went to my roof-deck just to see the wind seriously picking up. Trees were bending, leaves and seeds were flying high in the air, pieces of dust and gravel were darting around, hitting me like needles. In the sky, a typical roll cloud was moving across my place, followed by dark grey clouds with a leaden, blueish-grey shimmer in between.

Then the rain came, and with it lightning and thunder. The rain was very, very heavy, creating a grey veil made of many individual strands. My roof-deck was covered in water, flowing to a corner and then down the drain. After a while even some grains of hail were mixed in. When the first lighter patches of sky appeared, the rain subsided quite quickly.

Short but intense. I hope there wasn't much damage this time.

Cheers!

We're having the most wonderful golden autumn weather with the clearest of skies, warm, sunny days, cool, ultra-clear nights which are moonless right now. Just plain wonderful! :)

Cheers!

Markus

Exactly the same here, dear Markus! :) I enjoy it a lot cause it is not so hot for me - so I have everyday 2 hour walk around this part of city.

Autumn is kicking in. And man, it's getting cold.
I need a jacket to walk outside without freezing. :ninja:

Yeah, within the past few days the warm, sunny autumn weather was replaced by cooler, cloudier and windier weather. Even I put on a jacket, and that surely means something!

Those days, today included, we're arriving to more than 30, even 35º, as a maximum temperature. What's that??!??!  Autumm or in the middle of summer???

I want some cold, to be able to wear longsleeve, even a light jacket, not only at 6.30 a.m. or because the air conditioning in the train  :bawl:

It's been raining 3 days in a row here :-(. Kinda annoying so much water. I have a leak in my room too  >:(. It's a tropical storm that is affecting the country and it seems there is another one coming after this one :-(.

here it's cold. About 5-10 degrees. At the weekend it will be -5 degrees at night.. I'm already wearing a jumper and a warm coat + gloves.. I would like to have your weather, Luth..

Hey folks,

Luth, give it some time. Winter will come! He's just stopped somewhere on the road to you, having a snack so he can strike at full force when he arrives. :)

Eresh, that sounds scary. Those storms can do a lot of serious harm, so I can just hope you'll be fine.

Agnes, our weather is similar to yours. Cool, sunny days, cold, clear nights with a light frost. I enjoy this. :) Yesterday I've even seen a tiny patch of ice in the afternoon. This means that even I wear a long-sleeved short or a short-sleeved plus a jacket! (One week ago I was still going for a long afternoon-doggie-walk in short sleeves which was funny, because everybody else was dressed up as for winter - thick jackets, caps, scarves...  :disgust: :lol3:)

Cheers!

Well... Autumn arrived! Not only I can wear longsleeve for fist time since... since... when was last time I had to wear longsleeve and jacket? I can't remember  :fish:

As I was saying, not only now it's colder (more according to the moment of the year we're now), but rain has arrived. In fact, storms arrived. If I have to tell... sky is falling... it's raining dogs and cats and elephants and tigers and... Today it has been very funny. From work to the train it had been raining so much that it was impossible to cross some streets without soaking your feet on water. Of course, I've arrived to the station with more water than jeans and trainers. Then, I had an appointment with the doctor (usual checkup) and I had time very tight... so I was forced to walk very fast despite the hard rain and wind and thunders and lightenings. The most fun came when my umbrella broke... Not only the few meters I still had until arriving to the doctor, but all the way back, with the hard rain falling again.

Ok, I arrived home soaking wet from hair to feet. Luckily I had a warm shower awaiting for me  :lol3:

Fogging moisture! :ninja:

We had some more lovely Golden October days - which were one hell of a sight with all the intensely coloured autumn leaves under a blue sky - but today the weather turned very Novemberish, with nothing but fog all day long.

Hey folks,

we're having strange weather. It's mild and windless; the strange thing is the sunshine. The air is extremely moist - your breath will come out in visible puffs, there's a very, very fine mist in the air, visible only when sunrays and shadows alternate (sunlight through trees) and anything wet will take ages to dry. Still there was no fog today. In the morning there was some very pretty fog right along the river but that's all, the day remained sunny. Only now there's fog outside.

Luckily we don't have the massive rain that is troubling the countries on the Mediterranean shore. Luth, I hope it's only annoying to you and not as bad as elsewhere!

Cheers!

Markus

Eya Markus!

Indeed, only a little annoying. Besides some minor problem in some parts of the country (flood on lower floors and such), the rain is very welcome. We had two months of drought, and rain is falling pretty well: continuously, although sometimes too heavy, usually regular intensity. We needed water: no mushrooms because too heat and too few water! Now, some mushrooms will appear  :wOOt:

It seems all water and wind came here
Title: Re: Nice weather, isn't it?
Post by: Markus on November 09, 2011, 06:59:50 pm
No rain here, but no need to water anything. In fact, right here and now the fog is so dense that water is dripping from the bare twigs of the trees.

Cheers!

There's small little showers of snow flakes every now and then.

Wow, really first time? For me it's VERY RARE to see snowing (despite the fact that two years ago I got stuck in Barcelona due to a snow accumulation), but I've seen it few times on my life. It must have been wonderful, was it not? I mean... I'm sure you'll get tired of it very soon, but a new thing is ever exciting!!!  :yeha:

Btw... Does anyone remember a round, yellowish thing that used to be up there in the sky? I can't remember the name... I know it appeared a lot this summer (very very dry summer), but this November is, at the moment, one of the rainiest from 1927 or such in Catalonia (the third rainiest at the moment). Yesterday I heard this data. And half a month to continue raining and exceed those figures. My poor umbrellas... (the ones that survived, not the one broken the first windy storm)... they have never been so busy!

Spain, a country of sun and beach and... well... I think we must change the topic a little :afaid:

Hey folks,

Jorge, I think you will get some serious snow cover soon. And then I hope that your railway companies and your municipalities are smarter than ours who went "Snow? Snow?! Who could have ever expected snow right now, in winter?" last year. :fish:

Our weather is boring. High pressure without end! Sometimes more foggy, sometimes clearer, sometimes a bit frosty, sometimes a bit above zero - but always that calm high pressure weather. Well, as far as I'm concerned we can keep this kind of boredom for another while!

Cheers!

Hey folks,

a serious storm is approaching. It's the kind we call "Orkan" in German. I've found "hurricane" as a translation but of course we're not talking about the tropical hurricanes here. This name is given to any storm with wind speeds of 120 km/h or more. The worst part will pass us by, but what we'll get is heavy enough, including some heavy rain. There's a severe weather alert and there's likely to be some damage.

In the mountains it's even worse than down here because "Joachim" is a snow storm there. Trees are collapsing under the weight in the storm. Let's hope that no people get seriously injured.

Oh, and farewell, my dear winter-barbecue tonight. :bye:

Cheers, anyway!

Markus
Title: Re: Nice weather, isn't it?
Post by: Markus on December 16, 2011, 12:19:41 pm
P.S.: "Joachim" has even developed an eye: The center of the storm is almost wind- and cloudless.
Title: Re: Nice weather, isn't it?
Post by: Persephone on December 16, 2011, 04:11:06 pm
We got the orkan here too (also call it the same).  Not in Prague, here is very strong wind but not so strong. Orkan is in the mountains...

I'm glad that you're not directly affected, either. :)

Well, Eresh can probably just laugh at our "severe weather" but to me it's scary enough. I do hear sirens more often than usual today, that's probably due to the storm - even though it's not sooo bad here.

Cheers!

Severe weather brings catastrophes in my country. And I mean catastrophes. We are never prepared for our long winters (which involves ridiculous amounts of rain). It's very sad because as always, poor people are the most affected  :bawl:

Now it is summer (we only have summer and winter) and during this time of the year we get hit by a few "cold fronts". Which is nice. But usually cold fronts bring strong winds, and again, poor people are affected because it damages their homes :-(

By the way, I have never seen snow  only on TV, etc  :ninja:

Today it is hot. I am thinking 28C. Very sunny (turns on her fan). Read on the newspaper we might have rain  ¬¬. Weather is going nuts

Yeah, Eresh, I'm aware that your storms are much worse than ours. And luckily even "Joachim" passed without any major damage here.

Never seen any real snow? Well, we still get some every now and then; the past two winters were pretty cold and snow-rich. Perhaps you'll get some snow on a journey one day. :)

Cheers!

Canada's weather has been behaving oddly.
It's middle of freakin' December, yet there's been very little snowfall. The first snowbeds seemed to be the last; they were gone after a pair of days and it really hasn't snowed ever since. I'm hoping that it snows when I'm back from my winter holiday in Kuwait (yeah, that makes perfect sense... One week or so... in Kuwait... :ninja:).

Here we are getting real winter this week. It finally started to freeze. Today it's supposed to be -5°C during the day and on Sunday -11°C during day and -30°C at night  It's rather unpractical on that day cause in the Sunday morning at 9:00 AM we are supposed to attend an excursion at the airport - which is rather windy and cold place even without this Russian winter (it really came from Ural this cold front) so I really wonder how am I going to make it with no proper clothes.
Not to mention the frosts in Tromso... which is waiting for me on 16th Feb.  :lol3:

The cold is heavy, though. It's so cold that sometimes I'm even wearing and undershirt beneath my pullover, and that surely means something! :lol3:

Strange thing is that up to now the winter was way too warm so nobody really expected this anymore. Meteorologists say that cold at this time of the year may mean a long winter, well into March. We'll see... I'm also curious about the winter coming to Spain now.

even up here in Germany it usually takes only three to five snowflakes to disrupt public transportation and cause a general chaos.

Well, keep us informed, please, until your internet connection freezes!

Hey folks,

still we're having the loveliest winter weather. So on my way from the office to the train, across the white fields, I just had to listen to Secret of the Runes. What an experience to hear "Ginnungagap" in the icy fields with the sun shining right on you! "Nifelheim" was a must as well.

And then I saw glistening crystals of ice lying on the snow cover, reflecting and refracting the light of the sun. So the snow was glistening with lots of tiny bright lights, bright as small LEDs - bright and clear in its pristine rainbow colours as the sparkling of a diamond! What a sight...

Cheers!

So we got snow from yesterday too. Today is snowing all day. Not much but it is. I happy for the snow but at the same time it's making me worry a bit - even though I still have a week left. I am afraid my flight might be very much delayed or cancelled next Thursday. :(

Winter is approaching its end. :bye: The severe frost is over, we just have some mild degrees below zero and are getting a thaw soon - probably connected to moister air with rain or some last snow. This is a pity because I just loved the winter weather, but I'm happy that we had at least those 2 1/2 weeks of genuine winter. :)

Hello! I arrived this morning to Zürich and it was absolutely awesome spring day here! I even did not need to take a coat but had tank top and one thing sweater and then a sweathsirt. The city looked so beautiful and peaceful - people sitting first time outside the restaurants eating their sandwiches and meals and drinking coffee enjoying the sun and fresh air. A fairytale! I saw swans after long time too and well - it was simply a beautiful day!

Yeah, it's become a bit colder over here as well. Though I suppose that 8-10°C and some light frost at night is pretty normal for this time of year and the extra warmth we had recently isn't.

Anyway, now clouds are rolling in but the morning was utterly sunny. So it's good that I did a long doggie walk right then.

Hey folks,

I just had a wonderful weather experience: A diffuse yellow light lured me out onto my roof-deck. The air was calm, and to the Southwest there were windmills standing still. To the south a thunderstorm was raging out of leaden clouds and the smoke from a chimney was being blown away by the wind. The yellow light came from a large display of mammatus clouds to the Northwest - something I've never seen before. :wOOt:

Then a light breeze came up and the windmills started moving while the mammatus faded. Let's see how this continues - I do hope that we get some rain.

Cheers!

Some rain at last!

There were several sunny and dry weeks. The weather was pleasant but it didn't rain. The meadows were beginning to dry out, rivers and lakes running on low water. It was starting to scare me - and at last we got some rain. It came rather gently last Saturday, over a few hours - slow enough for the ground to absorb the water.

A lot more rain is coming up today. I just hope for a little bit of sunshine on Wednesday morning, right at sunrise... :ninja:

Cheers!

Yeah... But see, over the past 20 days or so, we've had 4 or 5 sandstorms pass by. The sky's been orange most of them, and while it's a cool sight at first, it does become boring after a while. Not to mention that going out with a sandstorm out there is guarantee that you'll be covered in it, not to mention that driving becomes horrible with the lowered visibility.

Believe it or not, folks,

we had a light fog last night!

The weather has been unsettled for a few weeks now: Occasionally sunny, warm but not hot, often cloudy and with rain-showers. Showers and sometimes severe thunderstorms.

The week before my birthday we had such a heavy rain around our cottage that mud flowed from the surrounding fields, actual brooks flowed right through our garden - and the cart-track leading to our piece of ground became impassable. Dad had been stuck out there for a couple of days, so we did the garden-party in the weekend instead of right at the birthday. Luckily we had parked our cars at the end of the concrete road - because that night another rain refreshed all the mud. We would have been locked in if we had parked our cars right at the cottage!

In fact, a neighbour of ours ignored the mud and got stuck so badly that he had to leave the car there.

One of the thunderstorms also blew a potted fir-tree off my roof-deck. It was standing near the edge and I never expected it to be so easy to blow off. Well, I'll have to see if I can retrieve it...

The weather is not likely to change soon; at this time of year this kind of weather tends to be quite stable. We'll see... actually I don't really miss the big heat; I'd just like the air to be a little dryer than it is right now. :nosweat:

Cheers!

Whoa High Priest, that's some kind of adventure! But say, would you please post some pics of your roof-deck garden? I'm already very curious, because you are used to mention lots of kinds of plants, even big ones, and I guess that your garden must be impressively beautiful. :)

  • ...something short-sleeved - warm
  • ...something short-sleeved with stains - too warm
  • ...nothing at all - get out of my bathroom!

Wonderful! You Nord-Man!
Here at Dreamer's Homestead the temperature is colder than in Bp, of course. Luckily there was a lot of rain, so every plant is happy in the garden. :) Today we have a pleasant sunny day, about 20 grades, and wind. Here's always windy, because there are no hills. Enjoy your day guys!

Oh, that sounds very pleasant, miladies! Lucy, you do need to keep your plants happy so they can keep your bees happy. :)

Here, the day started sunny and calm. Then it got cloudier, and around 5:30 pm I observed something from my office that I've never seen in the flesh before. You have to know that my office is on the 4th floor of a building that's the highest within a few kilometers on a very flat piece of land, so I have a wide view over the surrounding fields, to a distant horizon.

So there were those low dark clouds rolling in beneath the higher ones, and looking out of the window I noticed something like a cloud travelling right across the ground. It was a cloud of dust, apparently, and it got stronger as it moved across a barren dry field. It looked just like the cloud of debris at the base of a tornado! Was it rotating? I can't tell for sure. I guess not, but at times it seemed to be. There was no funnel descending from the clouds above as you'd expect for a tornado. But as that structure reached some - what? agricultural truck-trailers? bales of straw? - it immediately tore something high into the air.

That structure quickly moved on and dissipated. I'm not sure what it was. A small and faint tornado? Dunno, but at least it was one hell of a wind.

Right after that thing there was a front of heavy rain coming along. Whatever it was, I'm impressed!

Cheers!

End result for Toronto vs. Hurricane Sandy (so far): 60000 people lost power (most of them got it back already), some trees fell, public transport routes got detoured and some old lady died hit by a street sign that the wind tore off its post. This was all off from Monday night.
Tuesday, which was supposed to be the "holy-crap-we're-all-going-to-die" day of the storm was as calm as any regular rainy day here (we even got to see some patches of blue sky and the sun for a bit!), and today (Wednesday) has so far been the exact same thing. While the hurricane did give the States a huge hit, looks like this bullet grazed us.
Which is good because I can go to the show tonight without fear of being killed by flying debris, being flung back and forth by the wind, having the show ruined by a power loss in the middle of the bands' sets or returning home soaked in rainwater.

It is. In the coast, of course, temperatures are always milder. Three or four weeks ago we had very low temperatures (3º or less on the coast), but right now we have a warm air wave, and there's even arriving more for next week. That's the reason  :fish:

Hey folks,

we had some wonderful winter weather for a while before it got mild again. Now there are a few cooler days again, with temperatures just around the freezing point, but warmer weather is coming up. :(

Cheers, anyway!

We had kind of spring in last weeks... :-/ Now proper winter what I find rather exhausting. I need the winter to relax like animals do.

Now it's rainy in last days and today it got a bit colder again. So it is that kind of freezing rain (cannot recall the English expression for it).

It's still there! :yeha: Today the clouds broke  up, showed a little of the blue skies beyond and even let a few sun-rays pass through.

That's a weird image to illustrate the upcoming events, Luth. That's Venus - but you'll never see it like that from Earth, or with human eyes for that matter. They could have chosen a better one easily, but what the hell! Most important is that they announce some events that people can see easily.

Hey folks,

some colder and drier air has arrived, and this morning was a winter morning as fine as it can be. :yeha: You know, the cuddly predator has slept at my place, and when we were having the first short walk in the early dawn it was clear and there were some stars visible. After dozing for another hour and having breakfast we took a long walk to the nearby gravel pits at the river.

OMCD! The sun was hanging low in cloudless skies. The snow on the way was glistening in all rainbow-colours. I was slightly frosty but the air was dry and calm, hence the cold wasn't unpleasant. Where the sun shone on my dark clothes it got warm. And then the lake! Deep blue, framed by yellowish-brown reed, bare trees and intensely red cornel. Just plain wonderful! :)

Cheers!

Lately, we had quite strong winter for us (- 11°C during the day, -20°C during the night)... now there comes milder weather a huge change in two days! Today is already much warmer and on Wednesday it should be almost +10°C!
Then again, on Friday the temperature should drop below zero and the next Monday we expect -8°C. It's like a rollercoaster around here!

I am at home :( cause I am sick with quite an ugly case of tonsillitis  :-(

Oh, that's bad news, Kris! Take good care and get better soon!

About the weather, it's very similar here: We had lovely winter until last weekend. A warm front came in on Sunday and brought frost-free air, some rain and wind up to storm. It will stay like this until the weekend, even though the temperature will sink a little again. A little, but not enough (no serious frost). In my eyes, this is nasty weather. I want some winter back!

Yes, we are fine, thank you! But the situation in the whole country is serious. Lot of people got stuck on the roads, even highways, despite that the they could hear everywhere a notification that everyone should stay at home. The Ministry of the interior even sent sms-es, to my cell phone too, that they are rescuing them, and if they are out of fuel, sit into someone else's car. How can they be so irresponsible, to depart with little children, grandmother, without food and drink, blankets, not enough fuel? :(
Title: Re: Nice weather, isn't it?
Post by: Persephone on March 16, 2013, 10:15:26 am
That is really irresponsible, I agree.

Still I have to say it surprises me that only 25 cm of snow can make your country turn upside down  We have that every now and then each winter in Prague and I am not talking about those meters of snow outside the cities and in the mountains - is it so unusual in Hungary?

I am glad to hear you are ok :-) How does Jácint like snow?
Title: Re: Nice weather, isn't it?
Post by: Lucy on March 16, 2013, 10:33:37 am
I think it's more about the wind that creates enormous obstacles from the snow. You know Hungary is mostly plain. :)

And yes, we are also not used to this amount of snow, because they say that there wasn't so many as far as they ever remember.

There were some funny events too: we saw a tractor yesterday, making the road free in front of us, then it came back again, with 6-7 children after it, on their sledges. They turned two times and also stopped to play in the snow.

Jácint? He loves the lot of light that comes from the white snow. Last time when we went to a sledge ride, he seemed to enjoy. Now we are going out again, because the sun is shining nicely, snowfall and wind stopped. :)

Over here, the weather is becoming more and more surreal: It's sunny but bitter-cold. We have serious frost and the icy Eastern wind is tough. However, when you're standing in a wind-calm place where the sun hits you, you can feel its warmth. Too bad that there are no leaves to suck in the sunlight to make sugar from it.

So we really had a white Easter this year, folks.

As I woke up on Easter Sunday, there was snow falling outdoors, and it was still falling as I walked the cuddly predator around the gravel pits.

Even now there is still snow lying in many places. In this cold air it takes direct sunlight to melt the snow, so in any shady place it still stays white.

We do not have a snow forecast, at least according to yr.no but still the weather is annoying. Very Danish weather... in my opinion. :)

It's interesting you know, because according to old sayings (and to what I remember), this kind of weather is not supposed to be unusual in my country. Even in the half of April there could be snow and frost. But in last years we got so much used to the fact that the winter goes away in half of March that now it is a shock for us :)
Title: Re: Nice weather, isn't it?
Post by: Markus on April 07, 2013, 08:48:52 pm
Indeed, Kris!

Our weathermen were telling us that so late a winter is unusual even for our old climate, before the global warming started to kick in. Paradoxically, the warming may be causing these late winters: By changing Arctic cold-air-flows it might bring late cold winters to our latitudes.

Whatever... today we had a sunny day with milder air. Still, everybody was wearing thick winter jackets, including me - but mine was open. :wink2: But although spring is slowly sneaking in, deeper in the forest where I took Abby for one of our long walks, there was still quite a lot of snow lying.

Cheers!

We got first sun in many days! :) I am so glad for that. But it's not to last long.

Yes, as far as I know, the global warming should cause the Gulf Stream to disappear. And that one is supposed to be the reason why here in Central Europe we have such a mild winters (and that in Norway up high still bloom cherry trees, England usually does not know lower degrees than 0°C, etc...) and so when this one disappears - we are to get rough winters.
Title: Re: Nice weather, isn't it?
Post by: Markus on April 08, 2013, 11:01:07 am
Yeah, Kris,

that's the big "New Ice Age by Global Warming" scenario. The one that would take centuries or millennia in real life and that was speeded up to a few weeks by Roland Emmerich for "The Day After Tomorrow". But as I understood it, this here is a different effect. The gulf stream is still working well and it's just different winds that bring cold air to our latitudes.

Anyway, seems like we're slowly approaching some real spring. :)

Cheers!

Ooops, Lucy,

seems I messed up two figures of speech. What I meant to say is "Stay strong and well, don't let anything drag you down". But that's correctly expressed as "Keep your chin up!". In German we have the saying "Halt die Ohren steif!" for the same, and that's literally "Keep your ears pricked".  :lol3:

Apparenly, this is also of interest for our Regina Mala Germanonecarica. :ninja:

Anyway, we're having a cloudy but bright day. No sunshine, but when you go out you still get a good dose of daylight.

Indeed, we're having spring-weather! :wOOt: It's warmer, sunnier - and for the first time since months I've seen cumulus clouds, which make the sky look much more summerly than that uniform flat cover we used to have for ages.

Dieses Sauwetter geht mir auf den Geist! - I would prefer some warmer and sunnier weather!
Scheiß Regen! - It's raining too much for my personal taste!

Hey folks,

we're having the strangest weather. There's a bright hot thing in the sky that lights up the whole landscape and makes it warm outdoors. Dunno what that is, but it might be dangerous: I saw a guy with a burnt neck today who said he'd been exposed to the rays of that hot bright thing. :afaid:

Cheers!

Do not expose yourself too much to that bright thing from the sky... or you'll end up as so many English and German people in my town, who expose themselves without any brain to it, and they turn walking tomatoes  :evil2:

I see, Kris. But you've passed and that's what counts most, isn't it? So congrats!

About our weather: We did get severe thunderstorms last night and they did bring much cooler air. :nosweat: Luckily, no damage was done right here. The rain was heavy and the lightning activity intense. In a 90-minute-interval they measured 137.000 bolts of lightning over Germany and small parts of the neighbouring countries. That's quite a lot - a normal front in summer may bring 30.000...

Cheers!

Curiosly, we have a very mild summer here! A max. of 24º in a sunny day is not a lot, and I don't feel too much humidity. Tonight / Tomorrow some rains or storms can arrive, so temperature can even be lower. We've had very few days of real hot, when at those time of the year, usually, we've been already sweating for a lot of time! Maybe we've changed the climate?  :ninja:

In fact, in the mountainous part, there had been some heavy problems: there's a lot more snow than usual this time and right now they had some high temperatures (snow melts), some heavy heavy rains (snow melts and rain makes rivers grow). Consequences: the rivers have been uncontrollable, some of them have overflown and a lot of people had to leave their homes for safety for some days. Bridges broken, and a lot of destruction. No human life suffered, fortunately, but rivers have been fuller than ever... in their birthplace!

Title: Re: Nice weather, isn't it?
Post by: The One on July 10, 2013, 04:14:14 am
I'm fine, I live in area at an elevation high enough that I was pretty much unaffected, but other parts of the city were pretty hectic. We also had a city-wide blackout.
So, this is what happened: Monday seemed like a nice regular day, you know, sunny and all. Then at about 4pm it all got dark out of a sudden, it rains. And it rains. And it didn't stop raining until about midnight. We had twice the amount of precipitation we'd regularly have in a whole month... So obviously, this led to rather unfortunate situations, especially downtown where the subway tunnels flooded. People's basements got flooded to pretty much waist-depth. And well, then there was the city-wide blackout. My building for example didn't get power back until about 1am. But things are fine. Now it's just a little wet out there.

Ooops, sorry to hear that, Jorge! I hope the damage was only material and no one got seriously injured?

That local flood even made it into our newspapers, albeit only as a small note.

Just been in the news: from last 14 days, there have been 13 with hail somewhere in Catalonia (usually in the farming zone, where it can be more harmful). It's absolutely atypical for a July, and the reason is the good weather stuck in Ireland instead of Italy and its Mediterranean area... Summarizing: a lot of heat (the usual one), a lot of humidity (nothing weird here) and a lot of evening with thunderstorms and hail... which is absolutelly weird and bad for the crops  :afaid:

Nice weather... nice weather... perhaps too nice? Please, can anyone tell me if Autumn is really here? We've had two or three "more atumnish" but, since some days ago, we're again at 25º, and with a lot of humidity (which makes it feel like even warmer, even at night). I've seen the forecast, and we won't have lower temperatures during, at least, five more days. We'll arrive at November with almost-Summer temperature? Is the weather crazy? I wish to get rid of my Summer clothes (well... to have it hidden in the wardrobe, at least) and take my Autumm clothes to see a little of the world!!  :bawl: :ninja:
Title: Re: Nice weather, isn't it?

Hey Luth,

it's very similar over here. We're up for about 20°C. This feels scary with the autumnally short days and low sun. But even scarier were the 20°C Munich experienced last December!

They say that the climate change is confusing air streams. That lead to cold and long up here winters recently even though the average world temperature was higher than ever, and these late warm days may be related to that, too. I mean, strange end extreme is nothing new at all, but the exceptions of yore are becoming the rules of today, and that is strange and frightening.

Cheers, anyway!

Markus

Yep, I suppose the climate change has something to do...  :afaid:

In fact, that temperature is not so weird if you think how long we had to wait until real heat arrived: this year, some people even said that Summer was not coming! Of course, it did, but a lot later than usual. It seems that more than temperature changing, what it happens right now is temperatures changing its usual period of the year...  :ninja:

Still so hot, Luthy? We have a similar 22-25°C since days, we didn't have to start a fire. But we have the same news about Tuesday.

 Hey folks,

we've had unusually warm weather, too. Last Sunday I was taking a walk with Abby in short sleeves. That weather felt surreal: The daily course of the sun and the state of the vegetation all scream "autumn" while the temperature is saying "summer". At the same time, the sunlight is falling at a low angle through the almost bare branches and between the trunks of the trees, thus making forest floors strangely bright. That felt definitely weird to me.

Yesterday we had a bad storm... now, some calmer and cooler weather is in sight.

Cheers!

Hey folks,

I just loved this morning, despite the fact that I had to get up cruelly early for my early shift. But the sky was clear, the stars twinkling, some light frost in the air and hoarfrost not only on the cars but even on the grass. Hell Nifel!

Cheers!

How is the weather now, Luthy? Is it getting colder there too? :)

Yes, it is!! Now in the morning is really colder (less than 10º), and during the day too. Still not freezing cold, but in fact... here, we rarely have it freezing cold  :nana:.

Plus, last weekend we had huge rains and storms, after a very unusual dry Autumn (not good for our "neighbors" from the Sardinia island, who recieved the same storm transformed in a cyclon  :-[  ).

after some cool and moist days, yesterday was almost frosty and clear. :) Winter is sneaking up!

Weather is crazy... two weeks ago, at midday, I could almost go short-sleeve. Today, morning, Barcelona, near 0º. It has been snowing (very light snow) very near my city, I suppose that in places that are not at the sea level. And the forecast says that it can (light) snow in El Tibidabo, a mountain in Barcelona (so, not so high...).

Where is Autumn? Where Spring? Where the middle terms have gone?  :bawl:

Hey folks,

the media are full of reports and warnings about winter-gale "Xaver" coming up. A severe storm with gusts that makes objects fly around dangerously is expected. Besides that, the coast is preparing for a storm-tide comparable to the great tide of 1962. The weather situation is comparable, they say, but the dams are much better. Still there are warnings not to leave the house if you can avoid it.

I live in the middle of Germany, and the North is to affected most badly this time. I don't think I'll be in any serious trouble. We'll have to wait and see - cross your fingers a bit, please!

Cheers!

Hey folks,

Xaver is storming outdoors. This afternoon, before the storm, I saw a large field of Mammatus-clouds, which is unusual... normally these clouds appear near heavy thunderstorms. I took that as a foresign of the approaching storm.

Cheers!

Take good care, High Priest - or rule the winds! :pop: Do you need to leave your home before the storm proceeds?

Yes, take care!

I think the most stormy will be in the north, won't it?  :afaid:

Thank you, miladies!

Apparently, the worst storm is over for my part of Germany. Not much damage here, as far as I could see. The North, especially the coast, has been struck much worse. Now I must see how bad the snow will get.

I was out on my way to work before the storm arrived and returned now, after the gale had subsided a bit. The warnings go on until tomorrow noon, by which time I will be in the office again. :)

Cheers!

I got home before the storm here started - I know we had a thunderstorm at night. Veeeeeeery strooong wind started about 12 hrs ago and is still with us.

Also we had a power failure during the night and in the morning, now the power is back.

The clouds walk through the sky very quickly!

After very warm December and the first part of January, the frost eventually came to us... Now it's getting warmer, but about -16 deg. C still... However, it feels nice and there's a lot of snow  :hop:

As well as Moscow.... well, no, not exactly this.... This December was the warmest, but August, September and January are extraordinary, and the last is the coldest with some more new absolute records.
And in Tutonchany today it's -78 deg C which is the absolute record for all inhabited places in Russia.

Mmmhh... for the past few weeks we had some nice little winter here, too. Not as deep as ou folks mentioned, just some light frost and a little bit snow. Luth, I wish we would have had that in Frankfurt! Very pleasant, but unfortunately we're above zero again, at least in the day time. :(

Cheers!

Hey folks,

we're heaving mild and sunny spring weather, even too warm for this season. It feels nice, but we're in need of some rain for fields, forest and gardens.

The good news is that some rain is in sight. :) The bad news is that it's supposed to come in the weekend.

The worst news is that most of the rain is coming to the West of the country. :mad3:

Let's hope that the rain comes a bit earlier or later than expected now!

Cheers!

We had a nice day with temperatures of about 10 degrees Celsius yesterday. A false spring. Today we're being hit by a blizzard.

Not over here, Lady Sa'iltu. We're having rather dry and sunny weather - almost too dry, actually. I hope for some serious rain to come soon. Apart from that, the weather is quite enjoyable. Caught quite a bit of sunshine at the cottage today. :)

Here, a very spring weather for the weekend! But Thursday we had a rain that had more of mud than of rain. In Barcelona, it "rained" 1g of Sahara dust every quadrat meter. Today I've cleaned the balcony... I think half Sahara has been cleaned in my home!  :ninja:

I feel like talking, so let's talk about the weather, just like in good English manner.

I'm sending you my warmest hugs, from my country with hot temperature (finally). Lately the weather couldn't decide between rainy, windy, or mild, and it was very exhausting to bear. But since yesterday, early summer is here! I'm enjoying garden works and the bees are feeling great too. :) Beautiful flowers and scent are everywhere. All I see is green. :)

[On the elevator mode on]Oh, that's nice! Here we are having some sunny and warm days, too, together with some cloudy and rainy! In fact, after long time with too dry weather, we're finally getting some water. Curiously, although living beside the sea, we're having more mountain-like weather: sunny in the morning, clouds arriving in the afternoon, heavy and short rains in the evening. Isn't that nice? [/on the elevator mode off]
