Prefer the uneclipsed moon?

These words can't be combined into a meaningful sentence, can they?

Well, it's a bit weird to watch the eclipse going so far and then not seeing the utterly red, totally eclipsed moon. But I was surprised once more how soon you can see that there's no part of the moon really missing because the eclipsed part can be seen again - an eclipse of about 30% was enough to recognize the dim glow of the eclipsed side despite the glare from the white side. Later I could even recognize the maria, the dark patches, on the eclipsed side.
Also I found the colour and brightness variation within the umbra striking: Gray with an almost blueish tint near the edge, going a rather bright brick red then, and finally a much deeper and darker rust red, where the moon was deepest inside the shadow.
Well, with this eclipse my eclipse adventure 2008 is complete and finished.

Cheers!
