Real fan must know ALL the songs from all albums.
But A REAL TRUE AND SINCERE fan must be able to recognize all songs in max 10 seconds =P(it means that if you hear first 10 second you should be able to say what song  it is and from what album it is)
Ten seconds? Bah! If you're a real fan, you'll know the name of the song before it even starts playing.

If I wanted to give someone a crash-course in symphonic surgery, I'd give 'em this for starters:
Lemuria - This would get them in the mood. I'd tell 'em to picture an underwater haven, a safe place where nothing can harm them...
To Mega Therion - ....except the forces of darkness. Oh, well.
In Remembrance - Do not know why nobody here ever mentions this song.
Flesh of the Gods - If they're a Hansi-fan, this is the first song I'd throw at 'em.
Call of Dagon - If they're a Lovecraft-fan, this is the first song I'd throw at 'em.
Blood of Kingu - 'Cause it's just fun.
Son of the Staves of Time - 'Cause it's Tydhr.

If that wouldn't give 'em a triple orgasm and make them life-long Therion fans, I'd just shoot 'em and throw 'em to the dogs.

I'd keep their livers, though. Could fetch a good price.
Can't stop the signal.

Melez, Symphony of Dead are very cool

The Siren of the Woods is a must...

There is also Adulruna Rediviva of course...

But I think one of the best song (for me) of Therion that one should have listen at least once is Vanaheim  :pop:

Anyway in order to have a good idea of what is really Therion...you must listen to everything (except maybe the very beginning )s

Hello folks,

How can it be no one menion Evocation of Vovin, a truly "must pay attention" piece imo.

Melez, Symphony of the Dead and In Remembrance also are in my list.

Note: I'm -on purpose- excluding (can we say) hits as To Mega Therion.

Yeah, that's definitely good stuff. Though perhaps fan stuff - stuff for people who like Therion and this can appreciate the older, simpler songs. So I wonder: What makes these songs - especially "Evocation of Vovin" songs that must be listened to in your eyes?

Cheers!

Hi Markus,

When I first listened Lepaca Kliffoth and Evocation of Vovin I have already listened to works like Theli or Vovin -even to Deggial now that i think about it- and it seemed to me that the album (Lepaca) was a fundamental stone in the path followed by Johnsson. Personally I sense it strongly in Evocation.... I mean, the "identity elements" that are the shape and soul  of what Therion is nowadays were already there. I wouldnt say in a simpler way but in a "raw" way, with an special intensity and magic. The same goes for Melez and Symphony.

In Remembrance, is a must for I feel its a very representative song ( its lyrics, the music, the vocals ) of the themes and sound of Therion. Or maybe because I just love this song.  ;D

EDIT: I want to add a song: Eye of Shiva

I see, Ignacio. Well, my opinion of these songs is very similar to yours. I'm just not so sure that they are songs everybody should listen to, I think they're mainly for folks who are into Therion already. :)

Cheers!

Yes, I have to say that I like the elder hits too.

Actually one of my fav albums is still SM:HDHM... I love all of the songs on that album. I know it is different from GK or such stuff but I really adore it. :)
It's the dark side of Therion! : ))

I am especially fond of:

Dark Princess Namaah
The Ritualdance of Yezidis
Powerdance
Dawn of Perishness
(OMFG - the bass parts!)

I even have it as CD (original...) I think it was my second bought after GK (I was Therionized when GK came out).

As I said, I like especially bout it that it's depicting the early "dark face" of Mr. Therion! :)) When I listen to songs like A Black Rose or such (well, the whole two early albums - Lepaca and Symphony) I see the wild nature rising from the depths of everyone's soul, I see a raider party and one's soul wickedness "in all its beauty" as we say in Czech.
And I actually really enjoy that. :) And I am crazily fond of the foreign & ancient languages lyrics!

For the more popular songs... the ones who are easier to digest for non-metal listeners I would pick:

Lemuria - my heart's song, what more to say? It makes me cry even when I listened to it already hundred times
Siren of Woods - Akkadian lyrics!   and it's close to my studies and the epic story which it contains!
Raven of dispersion - always scares away depressive state coming :-) absolutely great lyrics
The Birth of Venus Illegitima - very catchy melody :-)
The Desert of Set & Invocation of Namaah - Well... I have one personal reason for these. The most charming voice of Piotr W. !
Three Treasures - amazing guitar solo, best metal-one I ever heard!

For SOTR - in this case I would vote for whole album  :nosweat: but I really adore Helheim and Nifelheim.

And of course for Deggial it's Via Noctura - for the absolutely amazin classy parts in it! Which make me feel like jumping in the forest with the Pan from Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream!

And for the SA and Lepaca I am not yet sure :-)

But then again, who does.

Actually one of my fav albums is still SM:HDHM...

Amazing album indeed. So dark and hermetic still so many years after. i get a different feeling from the "musical ambience" produced by synths and the one produced with orchestra instruments (used in next albums). I sense a kind of fear and contractions with the synths... And a kind o elevation and expansion  with the others. Thanks to your reply I've been -after a long time- listening SM:HDHM again these days.

Siren of Woods - Akkadian lyrics!   and it's close to my studies and the epic story which it contains!

It would be awesome if you can spare some knowledge on this matter!

I agree with Markus here but I would also add that In Remembrance does not represent Therion at all since it's from their not typical album A'arab Zaraq Lucid Dreaming that wasn't intended to be a regular album at all. That is kind of song that I would play to people that doesn't like Therion but prefer for example heavy/power metal or something else. I am not implying that this song is heavy or power but it's not typical Therion style. And btw that's an awesome song, one of my favorites.

And I agree regarding Evocation of Vovin, it's somehow between their old pre-Theli stuff and Theli.
