Hi folks,

time to revive this topic. :) Looking out of my window I see an exceedingly thin and fragile lunar crescent and above it bright Venus as evening star - even though the sun hasn't sunk as far as one fist on the outstretched arm beneath the horizon and it's still all bright outside. It's such a beautiful sight to see these two in the dusk, so look out and westwards to see the same. :) Look in the dusk right after sunset. You'll recognise the moon without my aid, ;) and Venus is the first and the brightest other object you'll see. When it's dark it'll be so blazingly bright that it will catch your eye, but with clear skies and if you know where to look you can find it even in the daytime these days.

The best day will be tomorrow, when the moon passes quite close to Venus, thus making an extra-beautiful sight...

Cheers!

Hey folks,

don't worry too much; Venus will stay there for a few more weeks. :)

Oh, and right now I have even spotted Mercury in the dusk. :yeha: It's rather bright, but always so close to the Sun that you only get a few chances per year to see it - at middle latitudes, that is. Closer to the poles it's even harder to find, closer to the equator much easier. And now I have spotted it, even through thin wisps of clouds, while on the moon the earthshine is becoming visible.

Cheers!

I know, I saw it last night

Oh, and right now I have even spotted Mercury in the dusk. :yeha:
I didn't know that was possible at all.

Hey Aluqak,

Oh, sure it is! Even now that Mercury has sunk down to 3° above the horizon I can still see it. Even here at middle latitudes you get a few weeks every year when Mercury is fairly easy to see with the naked eye.

Talking of earthshine and of "didn't know that was possible": I think I haven't told you yet that one or two months ago I observed the dark side of the moon, its unlit nightside! With a telescopse we saw the maria ("lunar seas" - the dark spots that you can see with the naked eye), lots of craters and even rayed craters - features that one usually observes when the moon is full. We saw them on the dark side.

Cheers!

Hey there,

the moon I have just seen through the scattered clouds although the sun is still half an hour from setting, and I hope to catch a glimpse of Venus, too.

Cheers!

Markus

Edit: And there she is! :yeha: Still 4 1/2 degrees to the upper left of Luna, so the two will draw even closer during the following hours. What a sight... so clear and bright even now, with the sun still far above the horizon and even through thin clouds!

I've just watched the sky... darkened blue, endless horrizon, the sickle of moon and evening star guided my mind through endless halls of ancestors... they told me the words of power... words how to rule the minds of many, and how to crush both week and strong ones...

I was in a hotel last night, the bank brought us to a country town for the weekend. We had a room looking to the west, with no other buildings in front of us. Skies were clear, so I could watch a beautiful sunset, the "constellunation", and a "moonset" perfectly. :)

My God... the Moon! I thought that it was much bigger when I was a kid. Now it is so small - maybe because child's mind is closer to magic and land of imagination but at least I still hear its call...

Yesterday when we were travelling back from Tokaj I saw the most beautiful rainbow of my life. Actually, there were two rainbows, one under the other, and the lower one was triple. We were on a plain part (yes, almost all of the territory my country is plain, but Tokaj is hilly), so I saw full archways.

Still on the way I saw lots of various clouds, and it was interesting because the clouds were in different heights. Usually I don’t feel which one is where because I see only one kind of clouds, but they were under each other, so their height could be well estimated and percepted. There were:

- leftovers of big gray rainclouds,
- curly whipped cream-like white ones,
- shreds of clouds far above,
- veils,
- torn cotton-like white clouds.

In the evening I saw a nice sunset too.

Here in the city it’s rare to see so beautiful visions, so I was happy to travel exactly in that time when all this was visible.

When I watch the sky, I just think... Which cloud type am I looking at? Although 50% of time, I know I'm looking at a Cumulus cloud.

Today morning, when I was travelling to my workplace, the sky was fully covered with grey clouds. But, there was a little hole between them, and some sunrays managed to shine down. This song came immediately in my mind:

"Sunshine hides behind a cloud (Eiwar!)
There's no light for us to see (Eiwar!)
But a ray is breaking through (Eiwar!)
The ignorance of human mind (Eiwar!)"

The sky looked pretty nice yesterday afternoon when me and some friends went out to do some excercise, play some football (both soccer and american).
Although, we mostly cared for how long the shadows were not to die of heat. :)

Hey folks,

under all the rain clouds of the past few weeks I totally forgot to tell you: The Perseids peak tonight! How many shooting stars you'll see depends on your exact location, but most of you may expect a few dozens per hour. :) Here the weather turned from incredibly yet to nice and sunny within the last 24 hours, so I'll go and watch the show with some astro-buddies of mine. Thank Notessomes that I have a late shift tomorrow. : bow:

Cheers!

I came here to check if you'd posted this interesting piece of info yet. If not, I was ready to do it myself.
