Well, Liv,

ask an expert. -_-

Sirius or alpha Canis Maioris is the brightest fixed star in the skies. It turned out to be a binary. The main component is a bright star still on the main sequence, i.e. still in the middle part of its star life; the companion is a white dwarf, the remnant of a burnt-out sunlike star. As usual, the main component is named "Sirius A", the companion "Sirius B". There's no planet or constellation of that name.

Cheers!

Wow! Didn't know that.
I'd like to ask the High Expert Priest  :pop: : What does "Po tolo!" mean in the song "Sirius B"? (You can answer me in the Therion section, for not going off topic!)

Very simple, that is the name the Dogon gave to that little star, which they couldn't even see but knew that it was there. Po Tolo=Small Star=Sirius B

Which some claim the Dogon knew was there, One. ;) This difference is important - in fact they didn't know. But apart from that, thanks for the information! :)

Thanks for sharing, Markus. I didn't know the Sirius A - Sirius B thingy

I'd like to take an astronomy course during holidays, but I don't know where I could do that, here in Romania! I'll start some French lessons today, though!  :w00t:

Hey Liv,

that's a good decision! :iconmi77kl:

Try to find out whether the local university offers any courses to the public. Here in Halle they do. Most probable department is the department of physics. You could also ask the next adult education centre, and you should search for the next society of amateur astronomers. If none of these steps help you can still get a couple of good books and go autodidact.

Keep me updated, please! :)

Cheers!

A friend of mine is member of the Romanian Astronomers Society, or sort of, and I could very well ask him... if he wasn't on a US trip    I'll try contacting him via e-mail, so he can answer whenever he's got the time to do so.

I don't think the university organizes public courses. We're not in Germany

Thanks for the ideas, though. I'll check them out. Nai Eru varyuva le!
