Main differences are:
- riff structures
- type of disortion
- other vocals (death - growls, black - more shriek alike)

I remember 5 years ago I said on Nightwish forum that Therion was black... I got couple of responses like this:
And I was a complete newbie to metal back then... After that I stopped classifying bands...

But I remember on Wacken Open Air 2007, I was reading that official program booklet and it was stated there that Therion used to be a black metal band!?

I think you forgot one more difference: black has keyboards, death does not have...

Death HAS keyboards too... it depends on band - check Hollenthon... bah... even in some tru brutal death bands you may find some... oh, and some black metal bands will kill another bands for using keys...

This is main problem... classification may help... but in the same way it's usually quite useless....

As soon it will be possible I will add my black metal panda make up.... or prog death one with cigar and glass of rum...

This a pic of my office at Technical University in Berlin... btw that is the place where most of the spam flooding this forum since 23st November 2007() is generated! On the door is written my name, hope you can read it... and I hope you can read my handwriting on the blackboard, that's the lyrics of Nightwish song Dead To The World. Haha, the yellow paper says: "Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 CPU T720 @ 2.00GHz, RAM: 1022MB, SYSTEM: 32 Bit"... that's my laptop performance, I always forget that so I put it there to remind me what a mighty monster I have! But unfortunately that's not the message I had on my mind... and I think it would be pretty hard to get that karma boost if it were... unless you know somebody from CIA or FBI to zoom and sharpen that small yellow paper by using algorithms known only to them! And to Hollywood! I'm not mean, this time I REALLY want to boost someone's karma... But unfortunately it won't be yours soulsmith. Don't be sad... be happy I don't reduce karma for wrong answers... In that case you'd be subzero, know that feeling already?

Hahaha, that is EXACTLY what Tapio Wilska posted on Nightwish forum back in 2002 I think. Somebody posted live pictures of Nightwish and on one you could see Marco smoking on the stage... some goth wanabee replied with "Marco please stop smoking on the stage, that's not goth at all!" and Wilska replied to him "Tough luck mate, who the heck is trying to be goth at all?" and then proceeded explaining why Nightwish was not goth! I was like this: , especially because I had been trying to convince the whole forum in the exactly same thing - that Nightwish was not goth at all!

You're forcing me to invent additional rule to the game, anybody who fails three times, gets a karma reduction from me...

Speaking about my laptop soulsmith, do you know it once fell on the floor from my bed! It banged really hard, the screen got widely open (180 degrees) and some message in German popped up on it about switching off the hard-disk for couple of seconds to protect it from the impact! Fortunately, it still seems to be OK...
