Title: Anniversary tour reports - beware of spoilers!
Post by: Markus on December 08, 2007, 08:01:49 pm
Hi folks,

so last night I went to the Therion anniversary show in Glauchau. To make it short: There were a few minor flaws. The sound wasn't always perfect, and both Piotr and Thomas were unsure with some of the lyrics. And yes, I did miss the extra spice that Mats used to bring into the band. But despite all that Therion have once more seriously topped themselves.

First there was a support band named "The Vision Bleak". Admittedly I had never heard of them before, but I liked their performance. Their singer was hard to hear at times - sound not mixed well, probably due to Therion having main importance - but they did play a decent metal that would be worth a concert of its own and that got us warm. But honestly I was also thankful that they played for half an hour only, even though I liked them; I had come for Therion, after all. Good and short playing - what else can you ask from a support band?

The Vision Bleak played in the front part of the stage, in front of two black curtains with their band logo hiding the rest of the stage. Between and above them you could already see the Therion backdrop from the GK-tour (Therion - 1987 - 2007). After the support act, when their instruments were brought from the stage, these curtains were rolled up. That caused a lot of ooohhhs and aaaahs because it revealed two huge black candles, Petter's drum set to the left - and a horror-movie-style organ on the right with several keyboards, the largest one ergonomically round. Ah well, even the stage technicians were wearing monk's robes!

What hit us next were two shows of Therion in a row. The first one was opened with Rise of Sodom and Gomorrah. The intro was followed by immediate headbanging. On stage were Christofer, Kristian, Johan, Petter, Snowy, Thomas, the keyboarder (who did a fine job on later solos), Lori, two female background singers and a belly dancer. Lucy, you'll love that part! The belly dancer was swirling on the stage with a golden veil, thus waving nice fresh air to us in the middle of the first row. :D Fine as she looked, she was outshined by Lori... The background singers were in the foreground, each chained to a post at the side of the stage. Both were wearing animal masks over their head - one a Baphomet, on an elk. :lol3:

When Christofer promised us some special stage ideas for "Wisdom and the Cage" you could already guess what would happen, and indeed: Mrs. Elk and Madame Baphomet, once released, dragged Snowy to a medieval pillory and locked him in, with a micro right in front of his face. While he was singing about his heavy chains they hit him with a birch. Lori climbed the left side of the stage and sang her "Sooophiiiiaaaaaa...." in full light, until Thomas drove away the nasty animals and freed Snowy. In fact the whole show was full of stage acting like that, but this was one of the finest examples.

Then there was "Kali Yuga" with Piotr's first appearance. :) After pt. I and II something strange and almost scary happened: I stopped singing along because I didn't know the lyrics. ;) My first impression: It's a pretty driving song with some calmer passages towards the end and some catchy melodies. The melodies seemed a bit Indian-inspired to me, which is very fine because the lyrics are Hindu-related.

Piotr was standing pretty still and looked a bit uncomfortable to me - I don't know if that meant anything or if that's just his way. However, it was great to hear him. Admittedly, he did screw up the first chorus of "Lemuria", but that didn't really spoil the great performance of that song. The main performers had sat down on the stage, some of them with acoustic guitars, and then they played and sang. Oh, what an atmosphere!

"Via Nocturna" saw some nice keyboard solos, and this first part ended with "Ginnungagap". Nah, that was enough stuff for a show of its own! 12 songs - or 14 if you count each part of "Kali Yuga" separately. A short break followed.

Then the second show began - in the one and only to begin a Theli-show: While the Prelude was playing the performers entered the stage one by one, and then it went "BAM-BAM: Powers of Thagirion - Watch the great beast to be!" Wow... Just another amazing show! They really played the whole album, including the smaller instrumental tunes. And some of the songs were varied a bit from the album version - but the same is valid for the first part of the concert. "The Siren of the Woods" came with some more big theatre playing and drove tears to one eye or another. Too bad that Thomas screwed up the lyrics, else this would have been perfect.

After the "Grand Finale" - complete with black flags as last February - they played "Adulruna" as if it was an encore. Hey, it's a 14-minutes-piece that must have taken big efforts to study and the tour is half named after it, so it wasn't difficult to squeeze this one out of the band. :lol3: Finally, "Summernight City" came as a "Thank you!" to the audience. By then, approximately two and a half hour of Therion were over. Great show, really - go and see it!

After the show we did not manage to talk a lot to Christofer; he felt pretty bad and disappeared in the bus pretty quickly. I did get my Theli-booklet signed, though - also by Snowy, the Niemanns and even by Piotr. When I asked Piotr for an autograph he asked me if it was an album that he played on. "Sure", I said, "it's Theli - that's why I brought it." He reminded me that he also played drums on Theli, but I think that it's mainly his unique voice that we love him for. I also told him how great I found it that he joined the tour, and he told me that Christofer had asked him for that so that the people could hear the songs with the original voice. When I saw the two of them on stage I had the impression that they were quite happy to meet again.

Well, after those short talks and autograph collecting at the tour bus (it's the bigger, gray one) we left for home, and I was in bed at half past five. Great evening, indeed!

Cheers!

Markus

Hey Agnes,

The tickets said that the show would start at 9 pm, and it was pretty much on time. The Vision Bleak played, then the stage was re-arranged a bit for Therion, and shortly after 10 pm - slightly over one hour after GTSBT* - Therion's show began.

Cheers!

Do you have The Vision Bleak setlist by any chance?

Hi there,

Do you have The Vision Bleak setlist by any chance?

Sorry, no. As I didn't know the band before the show I didn't recognise the songs and didn't care for a written setlist either - if they had any. They played some Cthulu-song, though: "Ia! Ia! Cthulu ftaghn!"

Ia! Ia! Cheers!

Hi there;

Just coming back from Germany. We saw the show in Memmingen, and i just can say that it was amazing. Markus made a very good report (congratulations man). The singers performed superbly (included Thomas ;)) but Piotr looked a bit off-side (wearing a shirt, downstairs near the keyboards) til "Summernight City", when everything became an organized-chaos. Two hours and a half headbanging, jumping and screaming. After the gig we met Thomas and accorded a "rendez-vous" in Paris. He promised us that it´s gonna be incredible. If you have the opportunity, don´t loose.

p.d. Horrible merchandise in my opinion.

Lemuria.

That's all I have to say.

Lemuria.

Oh, and Snowy! Snowy was superb, as always. Thomas was fantastic, too. I was in the front lines, so there wasn't much room for maneuvering and, as first rows go, the sound was less than perfect, but I could hear the vocals clearly most of the time. Wisdom and the Cage was great and Siren of the Woods was... well... Tear-jerking. Unfortunately, I at one point exploited the sudden stillness of my Therion-comrades and started writing a message to my better half. Next thing I know, Thomas is on the floor, dead by the hand of our beautiful (and busty) Lori and I have no idea when this happened. Et tu, Lori?

Managed to get my ticket signed by everyone with the exception of Thomas Karlsson and Mr. Therion Himself. They didn't come down :\

Right, so, where can I buy tickets for the next show in Zagreb?

Well, the concert was fantastic, even better than expected but due to some tehnical problems the show started a little bit late. Of course, it only made waiting worser, but it was worth it at the end. The whole performance was mind blowing. I'd like to see something like that again. What's somekind wrong is that I didn't like Thomas. There's something about his appearance that bothers me... and he doesn't look nice to me at all... but he did the job well, though I'd still prefer Mats.

At the end I menaged to get into the backstage to collect all the signatures (woho, my Theli booklet is signed by all, tonights, performers ^^), also had a nice little chat with Lori, Piotr and Johan and had a lot of fun. Also, I saw my math teacher somewhere in the front rows with his daughters, I think. That man is so cool.

Merchandise (shirts) sucked big time, but see for yourself.

Urbiha, eh? The redheaded one was a friend of his, also his ex-student, while the other one was a guy.
Dap. You know him?
I tought the readheaded was his daughter or something.
A "guy"? You?

When did Christofer come down? :\
As far as I know, he didn't. People told me that he spent some time with fans right after the concert but I haven't seen him.

EDIT: Oh, backstage. Lucky bastard :)
Thank you, thank you. ^^

Also, where did they hide the merchandise? Shitty or not.
The merchandise stall was in the concert hall, on the right of the exit/entrance.

Yup. He's a friend of mine. He was on the last Therion concert too.

Interesting times. Some people wanted to get their picture taken with Christofer, some with the professor. He was a hit, so we decided to do a tour.

Yeah... We heard comments like that. We lol'd :) She's a bit too old to be his daughter.

Guilty as charged. I know my sensual features arouse even males, so I don't hold it against you. It's my elfish nature, you see.

Gnjaaah. And I saw nothing.

As to the unfortunate delay... The show started late 'cause they decided to compile the kernel. Or install Vista on a Macintosh, we're not really sure which one. Either way, it was an epic fail until the Spanish Inquisition came.

Compare this (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v490/N1ghthawk/DSC00037.jpg) with this (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v490/N1ghthawk/Inkvz.jpg).

True enough, we didn't expect them.

Well, she certainly doesn't look like that. I'd give her about 18/20 years.
Of course, if we are talking about the same girl. She is the one that took the drumstick, right?

Guilty as charged. I know my sensual features arouse even males, so I don't hold it against you. It's my elfish nature, you see.
To be honest, I haven't seen anybody but the girl with Urbiha. But a friend of mine told me something about some guy who told him "If you don't let the stick you won't get anything either", or something like that.

Gnjaaah. And I saw nothing.
Don't be sorry. Theli tour shirts look like the CD cover, and are not especially glamorous. The only thing worth anything is the new Sirius B shirt (at least I think it is new). Well, there wasn't much to see as I was expecting to be.

There were two versions of that shirt. One was like yours but with tour dates written in the hieroglyphs on the back. The other had almost same picture- somehow modified (without that wall or whatever behind)- and with tour dates on the back, written in english.

If anybody cares this is the setlist for Vision Bleak.
The order of songs is probably incorrect but the titles aren't.

Amala & Kamala
The Demon of the Mire
Carpathia
The Grand Devilry
Kutulu!
Evil is of Old Date

Well, we saw the concert yesterday in Budapest - it was great!

I won't spoil you too much - only say that this was one of the "quickest" concerts I've ever met. We didn't have to wait long outside the hall - maybe 10 minutes, usually I have to stand more than 1 hour!... - then we waited inside the building but outside the concertplace itself, Lucy, Kris,Arina and me directly in front of the security guy. We watched souncheck of "Vision Bleak" and I surprisingly realised that I understand what they speak... so they seem to be german, haha. We girls catched some attention so finally one of the guitar players waved to us - of course we repeated  - we even got filmed at this point already :)
When security let us in I tried to follow running Lucy and we beseted first row from the middle to the left side - I ended up in front of Johan as the outer left end.
Before the concert started I wanted to buy some food and drink and when I returned I only managed to get two bites of my sandwich when Vision Bleaks Intro already started...  Hello? I'm not prepared!!! So probably I'll be the only one on the DVD in first row eating a sandwich...  :insane:
For Therion we unpacked the big Sweden-flag Miss Swan had brought and waved with it and later the flag even entered stage for a short while - and we had to fight it back when Snowy threw it back to us because some of the girls standing behind us tried to get it... no comment on this ...
I thank Lasse so much for holding me, defending girls attackes from the back! Dear Lasse, it was such a great concert and such a great time with you there - thank you so much'  :huglove: I'm sorry that we had to leave so quickly for the bus - sending a big big hug to Lasse
I'm so sad because I couldn't catch Johan's plec in the end of the show - it flew directly towards me... and fell to the ground ca. 5 cm in front of my hand :bawl: ... the security guy picked it up and gave it to another guy two places left from me :bawl: :bawl: :bawl:  :sofa:  :bawl: :bawl: :bawl:

Well, if you happen to see someone on the DVD in the first row between Pragensia and MissSwan, holding an enormous Swedish flag, headbanging, roaring "LEPACA NAAMAH AMA Thou scarlet whore", showing the horns with all of the hands she has, well, that's not me. :roll-eyes:

@Lucy, I hope you are not mad on me for stealing you OFFy and Deathy during the concert. ;D The three of us were separated from the rest of NTSMSers... Deathy was in the first row and OFFy and me in the second one, right behind Deathy. But, after couple of songs OFFy and I deciced to retreat a bit to have more space for singing, screaming, headbanging, jumping, moshing... And we did all of that... all the time! :wOOt: After the concert ended, OFFy was still completely dry and I got 100% sweaty already after couple of songs. :ninja: Also tomorrow, I lost my voice and OFFy didn't... :ninja: God damn it OFFy, you must have some special powers! :lol3:

You should have known better and... suck/eat/whatever the phrase is 'cause I can't remember... the whole pack of Strepsils.
I've also had the same problem, took one and voila. ;D

I think you need to suck them if you want them to have the effect. ;D

Yeah, but I wasn't sure about the phrase and didn't want you or anybody else to get me wrong. ;)

Such a pitty I didn't photograph OFFy holding that Strepsils pack in the concert venue... :( Have I mentioned that OFFy looks like an elf... TheELFman! :wOOt: That would have been such a great advertisement for Strepsils:

"Even elves like it!" 8)

I could have sold that picture for big money... :P

Btw I think we have just found an explanation for OFFy's special powers like not sweating and not losing his voice... He is not a human... he's an elf! ;D

@DD: when you and OFFy stepped off the train in Zagreb you said it was snowing. Did OFFy leave footprints in the snow behind him? :lol3:

Sorry Deathy, I'll try to stay on topic in the future, but to be honest with you I find that very hard... :ninja: But hey, it's better I rant about OFFy instead of ranting about Tarja and Anette, don't you think so? ;D

 NeMo, I didn't know that were my special powers! Oh and you do remember that Therion in Budapest was my 3rd concert in 3 days and no I didn't save myself at first 2 concerts. I think I took only 1 Strepsilis after Therion in Zagreb, the other one was before Therion is Budapest. Maybe the combination was good, mine was from orange and your honey + lemon, I prefer yours but I had to try some other Strepsils!

It was interesting that the first person I noticed when we were coming was NeMo, I approached him and I started to laugh, didn't want to say anything. And then before any of us said anything, he told us not to speak, he wanted to guess who is who.  At that time MissSwan, Konstantinos and Lasse were in the first row in front of the gate. I couldn't stand near them, so me, DD and NeMo had a chat. Like NeMo said, both of us were behind DD in second row but after 3rd song we decided to go back a little bit to have some more space for jumping, singing and enjoying the concert. Too bad we weren't all together. Luckily after the concerts we met Messiah, Lori and then Piotr and Thomas. I just want to say that I had one of best times of my life, this was similar to Miskolc experience.

First of all, I'm glad OFFy is alive. I've started to fear that due to snow and strong wind (bura) his bus went off Maslenica bridge to the bottom of the sea... :afaid:

Chorus:
bottom of the sea!! bottom of the sea!!  bottom of the sea!! bottom of the sea!! bottom of the sea!! bottom of the sea!! bottom of the sea!! bottom of the sea!! bottom of the sea!! bottom of the sea!! bottom of the sea!! bottom of the sea!! bottom of the sea!! bottom of the sea!! bottom of the sea!! bottom of the sea!! bottom of the sea!! bottom of the sea!! bottom of the sea!! bottom of the sea!! bottom of the sea!!

and I started to laugh

And you never stopped... ;D

I just want to say that I had one of best times of my life, this was similar to Miskolc experience.

Me too. ;) The only thing that for me comes close to that is Blind Guardian gig on Wacken 2007.

I've REALLY GOOD PICS of London gig!!! Be a bit patient, and as soon as possible (Saturday as the earlier) I'll post them. And some videos, but with an awful sound...

And I have the plectrum Christofer used during the concert!!!!!  :wOOt:

(And some anecdotes, and... I'll tell later, when possible!!!)

Until further description, an anecdote: just before playing the accoustic Lemuria, the guitar of Christofer fell off, and Christofer wounded his finger. I can tell it was blood enough for me clearly seeing it from the 3th row  :afaid:. Someone from the crowd threw some plaster, Snowy got them and handed them to Christofer, who had to play the song with the poor finger covered and bleeding  :bawl:

Luckily, it seems that the wound was not so terrible, as he played fine the rest of the concert  :lol3:

How lucky he was that someone was carrying a plaster to the concert.
You never know when you might need it.

Maybe Christofer is an emo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6Dmg_4ZA2Y)! :P

I don't think that Chris is emo. I'd say that his guitar is cursed. ;D

Maybe Ahriman cursed it with his black magic! Because he hates Gothic Kabbalah and he hates The Anniversary Tour even more! :wOOt: Have you read how he said that even chopping woods on the stage would be more interesting...
