Title: Songs you can play and covers
Post by: The One on November 07, 2006, 10:45:14 pm
By the commandment of Our All Mighty High Priest, I have opened this topic.
This is, as the title says, about the songs you can play.
I play bass... I've been playing for two months or so
I can play:
"My Hero" by Foo Fighters (You gotta start somewhere, don't you?)
And I'm learning how to play "Black Sun" by a band who does not need any presentation. I'll post a tab once I master it completely.

What about you, guys?

Hi there,

I don't practice with my guitar as regularly as I ought to, but I do enjoy playing a song every now and then. For instance I like to strum "Ljusalfheim", and I'm still struggling to learn the intro of the "Siren". The latter has a bar or two that I just don't get right, but the rest sounds quite fine.

Cheers!

Markus

I sing a lot, but also try to play bass sometimes. The effect of this "call it passion" is:

Celtic Frost - Sorrows of the Moon
Celtic Frost - Return to the Eve
Tiamat - Sleeping Beauty

Hey One!

I have played guitars for many years, and most of the stuff that I learned to play by other bands tended to be in my earlier days:
Lots of Black sabbath - and I mean LOTS of Sabbath!  Learning the riffs & especially the solos led to a much greater confidence from me in my own improvisations and writing.  In particular in the past I have recorded for fun my own full versions of:
Warning
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Paranoid
Hard Road
Symptom Of The Universe

btw my vocals suck!  Other Sabbath songs I remember learning include:
A National Acrobat
The Wizard
N.I.B.
War Pigs
Iron Man
Sweet Leaf
Electric Funeral
Looking For Today
Heaven & Hell
Neon Knights
Children of the Sea
Children of the Grave
Wheels of confusion
Snowblind
Under The Sun
Supernaut
Voodoo
...gah!  plus loads of other Sabbath tunes too.

Apart from Sabbath, I learned a few Priest tunes, a couple Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin...  most of the Powerslave album by Iron Maiden (I had a neat tab book for that album).  I then got heavily into the thrash of the 80's, bands like Slayer, Metallica, Helloween, Anthrax, Celtic Frost, Deathrow, but to be honest I forgotten how to play most of this stuff now  :-(

Congrats and thanks, One!

What do you think folks, can I try to play this on the first four strings of my acoustic guitar? They seem to have the same tuning.
Title: Re: Songs you can play
Post by: Markus on November 22, 2006, 09:31:50 am
Of course you can, Lucy,

the bass guitar is constructed like a regular guitar with the highest two strings missing and the remaining four tuned one octave down. You can also try to base power chords on these note.

One, congrats and thanks from me as well. :)

Cheers!

Markus

I'm an English killer and I don't know what does "to base power chords" on something means? Please, somebody enlight me!
Title: Re: Songs you can play
Post by: Markus on November 22, 2006, 11:00:01 am
Hi Lucy,

a power chord (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_chord) only consists of the base note and the fifth, for instance A and e, and perhaps another a (octave doubling). This particular power chord (A5) looks like this:

e--------------------------------------------------------------------\
b--------------------------------------------------------------------\
g----2----------------------------------------------------------------\
d----2---------------------------------------------------------------\
a----0-------------------------------------------------------------\
e------------------------------------------------------------------\

You can transpose this one, so ypu can play a C5 power chord like this:

e--------------------------------------------------------------------\
b--------------------------------------------------------------------\
g----5----------------------------------------------------------------\
d----5---------------------------------------------------------------\
a----3-------------------------------------------------------------\
e------------------------------------------------------------------\

By "base power chords on these notes" I mean to play the bass line, but to play the additional notes as well that turn it into power chords:

Verse: “Black Sun rising…”                x2
G--------3-3-
D--2-2--3-3-   and so on
A--2-2--1-1-
E--0-0-------

I don't know if that will sound good, but it's worth an attempt. Probably one should rather play the riffs, but the bass notes at least give you a hint which chords might fit.

Cheers!

Markus

you can as well try the "Black Sun"-tab from the official homepage (http://www.megatherion.com/Albums/Vovin/Black_Sun/Tabs/Leandro.xhtml). :)

I...I cannot play anything...  :bye: Think I already mentioned my frustration of not learning to play the piano... *sigh*
Title: Re: Songs you can play
Post by: Lucy on November 22, 2006, 01:46:50 pm
I don't play either :lol3: I have a guitar and I know very few things about it... Let's learn together, Ely! :)

Good idea, Lucy... it's just that I prefer piano to guitar and besides, I don't have any kind of intrument, either I know how to play it or not
Title: Re: Songs you can play
Post by: TheOFFman on November 22, 2006, 05:30:20 pm
I don't play and I am not gonna learn how to play. A friend showed me The Godfather theme and I played it well imo, it's very easy to learn.
Title: Re: Songs you can play
Post by: The One on November 22, 2006, 10:01:38 pm
Thanks guys, it actually just took two classes to learn.
If you could tame a monkey and teach it how to handle a bass, I bet it could play "Black Sun". :lol3:
As for now, in today's class I've decided to start with "Quetzalcoatl", the bass parts for the first minute are simpler than I believed.

I play songs that i make, but also i play band songs like:

1.- Dissection - Night's Blood and Maha Kali.
2.- Eloy - Castle in the air
3.- Therion -  Almost all SOTR album (with another solos because i'm not so good doing that), some songs of Lepaca Kliffoth, Cult of the shadows, Prometheus F....., Dagon, Rise of sodom and gomorra, birth of venus illegitima, flesh of gods, and the last song is Der Mitternacht Löwe (when the album release, i will upload the Guitar Pro 5 Tab) I've made some tabs for guitar pro like Vanaheim, Quetzalcoatl (is not complete), Prometheus F....
4.- I play in a rock cover band to make some money in bars( Led zeppelin, black sabbath, steppen wolf, abba, iron butterlfy, creedence, pink floyd, stuf like that)
5.- Solo section: Since 3 years ago (i've been playing guitar for 6 years) i haven't play any particular solo but there is one that i know because i try it too many times that now , 3 years ago, i still remember it: "In to the storm" - Blind Guardian.

Ok, guys... Great news! At last, for no reason at all, my dad got me a bass. :yeha: I'm extremely happy, I've playing all afternoon. ^_^
So far, I've just learned one new song:
"Asgard"
and I'm on the way of "Black Fairy" together with a friend on guitar.

till this day about month I still work at sheets of Perennial Sophia and Lemuria.. for piano..
I play the piano about 10 years, and I am really happy when I can play my favourite songs..
unfortunately recently I haven´t too much time  :(
so if anyone have some adress where I could download sheets for piano from Therion (hehe..I am really naive)
just let me know :)

Well, I don't have any piano sheets, but there's a lot of Guitar Pro tabs (which show the classic notation too!) if you're interested.
Currently there's a lot of songs I know how to play:
Therion- To Mega Therion
Therion- Cults of the Shadow
Therion- Black Sun
Therion- Asgard
Therion- Melez
Therion- Blood of Kingu
Therion- Quetzalcoatl
Therion- Black Fairy
Therion- Typhon (just learned it a week ago  )
Nightwish- Amaranth
Black Sabbath- Electric Funeral
Black Sabbath- Black Sabbath
Black Sabbath- Children of the Grave
Tarot- Pyre of Gods
Grave Digger- Rebellion (The Clans are Marching)
Grave Digger- Lionheart
System of a Down- Hypnotize
Stuff I know how to play, but really bothered to learn to play once:
Mana- Corazon Epsinado
Sum 41- The Hell Song
Currently learning:
Therion- Wine of Aluqah
Chick Corea- Spain
And some crappy balad in French to help the 10th grade French class.

Oh, if I can beg you for the tabs of To Mega Therion, Asgard, Black Fairy and Pyre of Gods ..
I don´t play the guitar..honestly speaking I can play just about three chords.. :innocent:
but if its in Guitar Pro  I think I could re-write it to the notes for piano :)
and one more think - Thank you so much :)

There's no tab for Black Fairy, thing is 3 of those 4 songs I got them by ear with help of my teacher. (Or more precisely, I just did the playing part of it all :lol3: )
But here's some tabs that you'll find useful:
To Mega Therion (http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/t/therion/to_mega_therion_live_guitar_pro.htm)
Pyre of Gods (http://www.tabsheaven.net/tab.php?id=46645)
Asgard (no keyboards, though) (http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/t/therion/asgard_ver3_guitar_pro.htm)
And, there's no tab out there for "Black Fairy".... And I only know the bass parts...

Someone seems to be a fan of C# tuning.
You have thicker strings (like a "thin" B-string where the E-string is placed) or you're using the generic strings that come with the bass?
Title: Re: Songs you can play
Post by: VladH on December 24, 2007, 12:48:39 pm
Generic... but really thick ones ;)
Title: Re: Songs you can play
Post by: The One on December 24, 2007, 05:08:42 pm
Then this means I need to change my strings, since they are getting thinner due to [cough]excessive[/cough] playing. :lol3:
BTW: Currently improvizing with "Paranoid" from Black Sabbath and learned most of "Sahara" from Nightwish.

Ok, that sounds exaggerated, but I've been working on some faster (and harder) basslines lately.
Been working on:
Black Sabbath- N.I.B. (It's fun, but it gets old, almost finished)
Mägo de Oz- Molinos de Viento (almost finished, just a few fast parts to go)
Grave Digger- Valhalla (finished, started it today for fun, got part of it by ear and figuring it out from guitar tabs)

I still have a lots of to learn... so I search for some easy and catchy songs. Now I'm terrorizin' campus with:

Emperor - Moon Over Kara-Shehr
Emperor - The Ancient Queen
Emperor - Wrath of the Tyrant

Yup... next season we will try to cooperate with friends to make some underground impact... I'm sure that with our LACK of ability, LOUSY songwriting, SHITTY production and HORRIBLE lyrics in one year we will be one of the KVLT black metal bands... or maybe MEATAL  :evil2:

I think it's great that you all just knock out a Sabbath tune every now and again!  :wOOt:

It's just fantastic that you've got all these guitarists joining in and doing their thing... it's kinda shambolic fun! ...they're just learning, their time will come...  and of course they are lucky to have good solid bass underpinning it all, keeping it together!

Glad to hear you're tackling Queen too... they are a great band, which songs of theirs do you go for?

Correction.....smoke on the water is great but I also watched your "child in time" cover.  That is one I was referring to .  one of my favorite songs of all time . Used to listen to it as a kid over and over.
You guys do an awsome job of that song.
Do you guys play a lot and which one are you?

Hi folks,

I took out my old guitar which I haven't played for quite a while. :wOOt: At the latest party somehow a guitar fell into my hand, and we played and sang, and I was pleasantly surprised how well it went (i.e. I didn't have the urge to cover my ears and run away. :lol3:). I was surprised how well I still could play passages and whole songs which I haven't played for a year or so. Amazing how I could never write them down or tell you which chord comes after which but how the song seems to play itself.

So I took out my guitar and started practicing again and agreed with these friends of mine to make music together more often from now on. I started where I had quit - Ljusalfheim, Siren-intro, and some easy campfire-songs like "Summerwine". Now I'm looking for good Therion tabs. Got myself "Lemuria" for instance, but so far only the intro makes sense to me.

Cheers!

Markus

thats awsome
Like riding a bike. well........for some I guess. I used to play classical guitar years ago and I picked up my guitar this summer and guess what, couldnt play a damn thing.  Came back after a while but man, the fingers wont stretch like they used to and my right hand feels like a bowling ball.
Oh well.
Keep it up this time and pace yourself.  I tend to get obsessed and then lose interest after 3 months

More from my son's band Catalyst
Please listen and give feedback whether you like the songs and writing style.
Of course the sound isnt great but if we get enough positive feedback we will invest more money to get some hi quality versions done.

Thanks for your help

A friend of mine and I decided to work on playing the first song together hihi!

She's a bass player and I am supposed to play the guitar

So we decided to work on an easy song: Breaking the Law - Judas Priest

We already have a singer too, she's awesome!

I recorded the first video of my playing already, but I still have to work more on playing the song. Someday...we wanna play live  :o

Breaking the Law sounds good only when the guitar player has the desire to play and the ability to.
I say this due to personal experience... I did a cover of it with me singing and playing bass and a friend of mine playing guitar... I'd kill myself if I had to play that song with him again... His lack of desire to play the song killed it. :ninja:

I can add here bass line from Candlemass's Solitude - quite easy one... and it's vocal line too.

Oh... and I can play the opening part of Danzig - Twist of Cain (on guitar)
