Songs you can play and covers
« on: November 07, 2006, 10:45:14 pm »
By the commandment of Our All Mighty High Priest, I have opened this topic.
This is, as the title says, about the songs you can play.
I play bass... I've been playing for two months or so
I can play:
"My Hero" by Foo Fighters (You gotta start somewhere, don't you?)
And I'm learning how to play "Black Sun" by a band who does not need any presentation. I'll post a tab once I master it completely.

What about you, guys?

Hi there,

I don't practice with my guitar as regularly as I ought to, but I do enjoy playing a song every now and then. For instance I like to strum "Ljusalfheim", and I'm still struggling to learn the intro of the "Siren". The latter has a bar or two that I just don't get right, but the rest sounds quite fine.

Cheers!

I sing a lot, but also try to play bass sometimes. The effect of this "call it passion" is:

Celtic Frost - Sorrows of the Moon
Celtic Frost - Return to the Eve
Tiamat - Sleeping Beauty
The Longships are coming...

Hey One!

I have played guitars for many years, and most of the stuff that I learned to play by other bands tended to be in my earlier days:
Lots of Black sabbath - and I mean LOTS of Sabbath!  Learning the riffs & especially the solos led to a much greater confidence from me in my own improvisations and writing.  In particular in the past I have recorded for fun my own full versions of:
Warning
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Paranoid
Hard Road
Symptom Of The Universe

btw my vocals suck!  Other Sabbath songs I remember learning include:
A National Acrobat
The Wizard
N.I.B.
War Pigs
Iron Man
Sweet Leaf
Electric Funeral
Looking For Today
Heaven & Hell
Neon Knights
Children of the Sea
Children of the Grave
Wheels of confusion
Snowblind
Under The Sun
Supernaut
Voodoo
...gah!  plus loads of other Sabbath tunes too.

Apart from Sabbath, I learned a few Priest tunes, a couple Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin...  most of the Powerslave album by Iron Maiden (I had a neat tab book for that album).  I then got heavily into the thrash of the 80's, bands like Slayer, Metallica, Helloween, Anthrax, Celtic Frost, Deathrow, but to be honest I forgotten how to play most of this stuff now  :-(

Congrats and thanks, One!

What do you think folks, can I try to play this on the first four strings of my acoustic guitar? They seem to have the same tuning.

Of course you can, Lucy,

the bass guitar is constructed like a regular guitar with the highest two strings missing and the remaining four tuned one octave down. You can also try to base power chords on these note.

One, congrats and thanks from me as well. :)

Cheers!

Hi Lucy,

a power chord only consists of the base note and the fifth, for instance A and e, and perhaps another a (octave doubling). This particular power chord (A5) looks like this:

e--------------------------------------------------------------------\
b--------------------------------------------------------------------\
g----2----------------------------------------------------------------\
d----2---------------------------------------------------------------\
a----0-------------------------------------------------------------\
e------------------------------------------------------------------\

You can transpose this one, so ypu can play a C5 power chord like this:

e--------------------------------------------------------------------\
b--------------------------------------------------------------------\
g----5----------------------------------------------------------------\
d----5---------------------------------------------------------------\
a----3-------------------------------------------------------------\
e------------------------------------------------------------------\

By "base power chords on these notes" I mean to play the bass line, but to play the additional notes as well that turn it into power chords:

Verse: “Black Sun rising…”                x2
G--------3-3-
D--2-2--3-3-   and so on
A--2-2--1-1-
E--0-0-------

I don't know if that will sound good, but it's worth an attempt. Probably one should rather play the riffs, but the bass notes at least give you a hint which chords might fit.

Cheers!

Of course, Lucy,

you can as well try the "Black Sun"-tab from the official homepage. :)

Thanks Tequila!

Thanks Tequila!

I don't play and I am not gonna learn how to play. A friend showed me The Godfather theme and I played it well imo, it's very easy to learn.

Thanks guys, it actually just took two classes to learn.
If you could tame a monkey and teach it how to handle a bass, I bet it could play "Black Sun". :lol3:
As for now, in today's class I've decided to start with "Quetzalcoatl", the bass parts for the first minute are simpler than I believed.

That part is truly great, one of the best of the song , (besides the little bass solo and Chris' vocals :))
