How do you discover new bands?

Some ways I do discover stuff:

-  I read magazines, but only paper ones, not online ones.  Sometimes I will try out something brand new based on an article or a review  - that's always quite exciting, getting it home and finding out whether I've ripped myself off!  It's always great when those are successes.

-  Way back in the eighties there used to be a decent radio show that played good metal, and I discovered many bands there.

-  Once I discover a new band that I really like, I simply buy their follow up albums and ignore all reviews or opinions from anywhere else.  A good example is Therion.  Bought all their stuff without ever reading a review first.  Doesn't mean I like it all!  A'arab Zaraq is quite appalling!  But I enjoyed finding out.

-  The old 'he left that band, now he's in this one' syndrome.  for example:  I liked Candlemass, I liked Hexenhaus.  Candlemass vocalist gets together with Hexenhaus guitarist to form Memento Mori  - of course I'm gonna get it!!  Also, I got Krux for the Candlemass connection (as well as the Therion one!). etc.

-  I will sometimes see something in a record store and simply try it out.  I've avoided a few purchases this way.  I've even been known to randomly buy stuff I know nothing about whatsoever without trying it first!

-  Like I said elsewhere, I get sent promos these days too   :) .

Some ways I've never discovered new music:

Word of mouth  -  No-one I know 'in the flesh' likes metal.  Simple as that!

Internet  -  I don't download anything - can't be bothered, and I don't read online mags.

This post is too long !!  I will stop now! :)

I usually do it reading magazzines (be it online or paper ones) and reviews... by suggestions people make in forums (like this one :P ).

Rarely I do it by looking at covers of cd's, if there is an interesting cover, or a cover I see in every record store I might get interested in it, (i.e. Epica, everywhere I went I saw it, finally I got tired of looking at it that I bought it :D )

But almost 90-95% of the time I first download an album to try it out, specially if it's a new band, or if it's WAY too expensive... if it's an album from a band I already know and like (Therion, Theatre of Tragedy) I don't tend to listen to their new release, I just buy it instinctively (this has led to several dissapointments i.e. Musique, Symphony of Enchanted Lands 2  )

NTSMS is the only place online that I do actually read what people say about music.  Seriously.  :)

I reckon that if anyone on the net influenced me into checking out a band it would be Aluqak, JR or Carlios.  I did also check out Mago, via Luth.  I'm not as much into Black Metal as I was, but I would value Eresh's opinion always.  :)

He, he, that's good to hear it Rick. I mean it (even when it would be no all true...  :P ). Really, maybe we have too few topics about music. I mean REAL topics!! Imagine: if with so few, we are a good forum, with more topics like those... we will be gods!!!!

Man, this forum is awaking! great!
About getting music:
1. As I said somewhere, my main source are friends. We are five or six metalheads here where I work and we usually exchange some stuff... and of course, as Sirus said, NTSMS friends have had a big role to play too (*very proud of it too!*).
2. When I discovered the old Napster, it disclosed a new way to find music: "OK, this guy here likes some bands I like, let's try these two or three things he has and that I don't know"... the result: Estatic Fear, Tristitia, Finntroll, Suidakra and Wintersun among others came to my life.... but now Napster is dead.
3. Sometimes I get the time to "read" internet magazines, but I get bored very quickly, and sometimes I just go to the music store and try some new CD's, but Québec's music-stores are mostly speciallised in Power metal or brutal stuff... soo.. I usually get out empty-handed.

@Sirus: You have a risky way to discover music man... I like it!. But unfortunately I have to save money to go back to my country from time to time... so I really have to know what I'm buying. Perhaps I'll can do it in the near future, when I'll be rich and famous .

"NTSMS Rocks! - ignore everyone else!" <---- He-he-he, this is going to be a classic!

My method(s):

-reviews on paper magazines (last discovery: Ram-Zet)
-buy samplers like "beauty in darkness" or similar. if i find something interesting there...it´s mine (example therion, amorphis, in flames, lacrimosa...)
-As Sirius does, when i like a band, i follow up buying their albums.
-The old 'he left that band, now he's in this one' syndrome (good definition Rick!).
-Some years ago, when records were mostly on vinyl, i bought records only for the cover. I discovered good bands in this way: Cathedral (i love their covers), Morbid Angel, Benediction or Dismember
-Download the albums...

1.Well, I write for a webzine so that takes me to know more about other bands. Some I get to like, some I just put apart.

2. I Also search a lot for the band's history and bios, former and current members. Some members of some bands participate in other bands so I also check out those bands.

3. I take recomendations from my online/real life friends. With time I have gotten to set apart the ones that give good recommendations and are worth to check out from the ones that don't.  :)

Hi there,

my ways are not as professional as Sirius's: I discover new bands mainly by recommendation. When a band is mentioned in a forum I tend to get curious after a while... Also, friends sometimes recommend me some music. And then there's the metal dealer of my trust who knows my taste and recommends me new bands once in a while.

Cheers!

I've learned of new bands to try from the on-line store where I order a lot of my music from, The End Records.  Other places are last.fm; seeing reccomendations mentioned in forums; and like axe said, My Space.

I mainly discover bands through various metal forums, friends, and in the case of Grave Digger, becuase they will tour with my favorite band.
Also there's checking what bands played in any well-known metal fests such as Wacken.

I have tried Pandora, it's pretty neat but the selection seems small.

I mostly discover new music through friends (online friends, all my real life friends are into whatever the radio plays) and through wikipedia.

I love wikipedia for just browsing and finding stuff in general, and for finding new music it works great.  For example I just go to...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Therion_%28band%29

and I see that they classify therion as symphonic metal, so I go to the symphonic metal page...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symphonic_metal

and there I see a big list of other symphonic metal groups.  Then I look for music by each of the groups on youtube or google video, or sometimes the bands website if they have free downloads.
