Usually our teacher started the class asking us to say something in German: what have we done, what will we do, any anecdote... Lately, she asks for this at the end of the class if there's time, not at the beginning. Yestarday, when there were only 5 minuten left, she told us to talk about anything: fragen, explaing something... Then, I said "well... I've prepared something... a little thing". She said "aah, gut!!". I took my little paper (from the little notebook with the logo of my editorial, as I wrote this just before ending my free lunchtime at work), and I began:

"Gestern habe ich ein neues Deutsch Wort gelernt" (pause to see if I made a proper use of the past tense. Good... it seems all right). "KIESEN". (the teacher have a face that asks me to repeat it) "KIESEN. Das ist ein..." (stop. Read carefully. I clear my throat. Nervous laugh). "... ein altertümlich wort". (Teacher asks me to repeat the word. I repeat. She asks me to buchstabieren das. I buchstabieren das Wort again). "Das ist oft in Wagners ,,Walkürie" und das bedeutet "to choose". (I explain that this Wort is not used anymore. Teacher absolutely agrees). "Mein Deutsch Freund sagst mir. Er geht zu Opera und das Word was said a lot".

(now I realise I said "Opera", in English, and she didn't even corrected it. I suppose she was too flabbergasted to say anything

).

Oh meine böseste Königin,

Du hast in der Shoutbox die Polonäse Blankenese zitiert: "Hier fliegen gleich die Löcher aus dem Käse" und Du wolltest, dass ich Dir das erkläre:

"Wir ziehen los mit ganz großen Schritten,
Und Erwin fasst der Heidi von hinten an die Schulter."

Well, the rhyme doesn't fit. The second line should end with "...itten." - like "Schnitten" (slices of bread), "Titten", "Fritten" (French fries) or "Bitten" (requests).

Now you know the lame joke in those lines.

A similar non-rhyme is:

"Der Angler fängt sich einen Barsch,
Das Wasser steht ihm bis zum Knie."

If thou darest, ask thy teacher about that one.

Mmmh... Ok, I understand the rhyme is not correct... still, I don't get the meaning of the non-correcness... Are you supposed to change the word-with-wrong-ending with one of the words you already said? They don't seem specially dangerous to me. Or perhaps I still have to learn about German sense of humor

About the non-rhyme you challenge me to ask my teacher for... I'm not sure I dare. I still have a reputation in that class, and she is the only German teacher of that academy. Next year I'm very likely to have her again

Ummm.... yeah, you got it. The wrong rhyme implies that the second line should end with another word. In this case, you know, it's not Heidi's shoulders that Erwin is grabbing from behind. (Have I translated all the words or have I left one as a practice for the reader?

)

Similarly, the water is not only up to the angler's knees but a bit higher, up to his musculus gluteus maximus - but polite as we are, we don't say that explicitly.

I'm following a blog about a Catalan couple who is now living in Germany. The woman posts things that surprises her about German (the country, the language, the traditions...), and she does in a funny way.

She started few time ago na "Exposition": using gummybears (which she says are a lot more important in Germany than in Spain), she "draws" flags and other things... I'll post some of them:

Sie hat aber den Vatertag falsch verstanden... das richtige Bild dafür ist das gleiche wie beim Biergarten.
