Some time ago I'd said "woooooow, a coffee topic, yummy!!!!". Now I only say "that's great, a coffee topic".

Indeed, not long ago I was totally coffee-addicted. And the darker and heavy the better (but with sugar... I can't drink sugarless coffee). For no reason my taste changed a bit, and now I like coffee, but I prefer tea at the moment (perhaps I have to start the topic "Tea"  :wOOt: ).

To follow the topic, the most usual coffee here: coffee with some milk (it's served in a small cup, only a little bigger than black coffee).

Dark or light, totally roasted or delicate. With milk or sugar or without anything. From Brazil, Corse, Algeria.... all of them are small principles of caffeine divinity.

What kind of tea, btw? :wOOt:

I like the red the the most (even the not-tea-but-similar, the Rooibos). After that, the green one, the black and the white (in this order). And I had a tea with cinnamon, delicious! But I drank it all, and now I have it no more  :bawl:

I still have some :) Rooibos with cinnamon and brown sugar - it's realy delicious - I think I love this kind of tea too

It was no Rooibos, though. Perhaps I can try to add some cinnamon to the Rooibos  :yeha:

I must be off topic a little bit. :innocent:

Yesterday I met a friend of mine, we went to a cafe, and had a really nice talk. Meanwhile we were drinking tea (me rooibos with caramel, she delicious fruit tea). After a few hours we felt the smell of coffee and we drank coffe as well. I had an Irish coffee, with a touch of whiskey, sweet and strong... mmmh... delicious. :)

The Blue Mountain is said to be the best coffee in the world... I don't know if that's true, but the price of it talks by itself  :afaid:
Title: Re: Coffee
Post by: Aluqak on May 11, 2007, 01:23:35 pm
I don't know if it is the best or no, but it is the most exclusive that's for sure. It grows in tiny farms and in very special conditions... lot's of care, everything is done by hand in those plantations. Anyways, about the taste.. I cannot tell, the price has taken me away of those beans  :bawl:.  ... (and I'm not sure that I'll pay that price if someday I have enough money to buy anything I want).

My top five coffees in no particular order would be: Colombian Excelso (from the Caldas region :yeha:), Costa Rican TarrazĂș, New Guinea's Sigri, Celebes' Kalosi and Hawaii's Kona.

mmm... that makes me think that my cup of coffee is empty. Goes and fills it again

Hey Fishy,

usually I drink my coffee so black that someone has to turn on the lights, or else the whole building darkens. But for a change I sometime add some flavouring to it. BTW I read that a traditional Arabian flavouring is cardamom, so prepare to read about that.

Cheers!

I had a big ammount of fresh cardamon during studies (thanks to botanic institute and my favourite PhD)... yes.... it is traditional spice... and probably the best!

Man! cardamom + coffee rocks!!! :wOOt:
You just have to mix a few seeds with your coffee before filtering it and that's it. It is really... I mean really good.
The only prob I have with that is that your coffee marchine tastes cardamom for a bunch of time (that thing is oretty strong). But what the heck.

This workplace makes me coffee-dependent. But I'm drinking a caffeine-free coffee now (Please don't ban me! :afaid:) and this makes me think: What is caffeine-free coffee made of? How is it possible to extract caffeine from the normal coffee? Or is it just a synthetic stuff? Because then I'll stop drinking it.
Title: Re: Coffee
Post by: Markus on October 16, 2007, 03:21:06 pm
Heya caffeinists,

decaffeination (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decaffeination) is usually done by washing the caffeine out in a smart way that leaves the rest of the coffee-substances intact as much as possible. :)

Still, I prefer the hard stuff. :ninja:

Cheers!

Hey Lucy ... just for this time I won't ban you -_- ... but, it's just this time.
From a purist point of view caffeine-free coffee is not real coffee. It's a warm beverage that tastes like coffee. It was coffee one day, but it is not coffee anymore... because someone took out the caffeine from it. It is not a synthetic stuff that's sure!
How to remove caffeine from a coffee bean?. Well, take the bean (a non-roasted one), boil it for some time, rinse it with an organic solvent and that's it. You have a caffeine-less bean... weell yes, it has also lost many other compounds that can also be solved in water. That's why purist say, it's not real coffee, and that's probably why I, as Markus, prefer the hard and pure stuff.
You can find a quick description of the different descaf processes following Markus' link.

Other thing, caffeine can easily be extracted from tea leaves by sublimation: Take some black tea leaves, crush them, put them into a spoon and heat them with a flame... gently and slowly! After some time the leaves will begin to smoke. Put a glass over the smoke and you will see cafeine crystals forming in the surface of the glass. The tea will be useless (burned) after that, but hey, it caffeine-free! (That was a experiment we did in the University when I took a phytochemistry course. However, a a more complicated process is needed if you want the pure stuff).

Thank you guys... now I know.

Though it really does not taste like the "normal" coffee, I think I will go on with the decaffeinated version. It spares me from fast heartbeat, sleepless nights and anxiety (these are my usual reactions after drinking coffee).

Coffee! ye, was a lover too, but decided to try to quit the addiction like a month ago.

I began drinking strong black coffee since I was like 16. Ever since, if I did not had my usual cup in the morning I would get a terrible headache!

But this year I noticed, that after drinking coffee I would feel sick :-s So I decided to try and leave it, and I am almost 95% coffee free (95% milk, 5% coffee).

I still love it, and wish I could keep on drinking it, 'cuz I love the taste! but I think it was making smth weird in my health
