Title: Books in original language
Post by: Markus on December 06, 2006, 09:42:40 am
Hi folks,

because the topic popped up in the shoutbox... I'm a great fan of reading books in their original language. :) Using a language is the only way to get really good at it, so reading helps a lot. As One said in the shoutbox, some translations are simply bad; also many good puns are utterly untranslatable.

Lava, you said that you found Lovecraft's English still a bit too advanced. But actually all youneed to know are the words "terror" and "frightful" - sometimes I think that he makes whole books out of these two words. :lol3:

Cheers!

Markus

Hehe yes that's true, you only need those 2 words and the caracters like shub niggurath, azathoth, etc. What i am doing is reading first in spanish to understand it and then in English to ambient better. I'm reading "Divina comedia" in italian and I think is easier than spanish . ( I was in italian class).

Congrats! That's a nice piece of good antique literature. I read that too. :)

As I mentioned in the shoutbox, I'm currently reading Edgar Allan Poe's tales in the original English they were written in.
Besides that, the last thing I read in its original language for free will was "The Lord of the Rings". And a piece of antique I'm currently reading for my Spanish class is "El Lazarillo de Tormes", kind of like the "Ren and Stimpy" of it's time, you look at life's negatives and neglected Spain of the XV-XVI Century with some humor and exagerations.
