Title: Shoutbox vs. Posting
Post by: Markus on February 10, 2006, 10:15:19 am
Hi folks,

I enjoy the shoutbox very much, and I know you do as well. :D But sometimes we have "shouting matches" there that would make great fun-threads or even more serious threads, too. Don't you think that's a bit sad? The shoutbox is very limited in space, so it's no good place for things that might go in a whole thread. Beside that it makes the forum look deserted when most activity takes place in the shoutbox.

So I suggest: Let's use the shoutbox for what it's best for: Short and important messages, and let's keep the actual forum busy. :)

Cheers!

Markus

Are you mainly talking about the football thread, right?  :P

We'll, I'll hear you and I'll create the football thread!!!

Hi Luth,

nah, that's only the occasion, not the reason. It reminded me of this question. But take our invocation of Capra - half of it happened in the shoutbox, too.

Cheers!

Perhaps you are right man... I don't know. From my point of view it is just easier to post in the shoutbox: It's there no matters in which part of the forum you are writing, and it reloads pretty often, so it's almost like chating.
Perhaps, we should start to autoregulate ourselves and open new topics every time the soutbox becomes saturated... with football for example :D

Hi Aluqak,

no doubt the shoutbox is faster and more convenient. But it has its drawbacks as well: Due to the limited space we go less into detail, and interesting topics disappear out of sight so soon. :bawling:

I also wonder why so many people join us, but never post anything. Perhaps it's a good idea to say hello to them in the forums instead of the shoutbox? Perhaps that gets our new members to feel more comfortable here. Just an idea...

Cheers!

I never shout much in shoutbox, I prefer posting in forum!

Then that's why you opened the "Welcome, Elizabeth" topic, Markus! Got you!  :nanana:

I must admit, this "shoutbox" was a pretty pleasant surprise, since I'm used to regular posts, but then again, you're right, I missed the Capra thingy :(

Not really. It's just a nice old custom that I think we should practice again, isn't it?

Cheers!

I think we use it a lot like if it was a chat, and actually I think we should make use of the chat more.

I like verry much the shout box and this smile " :iconmi77kl:" my favourite
But like Markus sez the space is limited but is more interesting
Hmmm for serious threads we should make a new topic  :party43:

Hi folks,

I think everything has its place:

Chat: Ideal for chatting. Ideal for short and short-lived stuff of no great importance. The trouble here is that you have to be online simultaneously.

Posting: Ideal for anything that can go into detail or that would be nice to have around for a longer while. So serious and informative topics belong here, but also fun-topics can be better in the forum. You just have more space and take more time to post, so you can let your fantasy go much wilder. For instance, the Invocation of Capra wouldn't have been half this much fun if it had taken place in the shoutbox only, where everything must be said in one or two lines.

Shoutbox: In between the two. As limited in space as the chat, but slightly more persistent. And always around when you post, anyway.

That much on NTSMS media theory. :D

I'm not saying we shouldn't use the shoutbox. I'm just saying that some things go better in the forum, and we should remember that so we can pick the best of everything. Hell, what I'd like most is a humming forum AND a humming shoutbox AND frequent chats! (Though I must admit I visit the official Therion chat more often. I can use any program I like to access it, and I can see Seph and Franz there. Beside that, it's the actual birthplace of NTSMS. :)) So post and shout until your fingers hurt!

Cheers!

I think that out of all the  resources we have to communicate with each other we have forgotten the chat. I say we come in there more often peep!

At the Therion we can't be too silly because you know who might be bothered

And still... the way we're doing it right now, the shoutbox is killing NTSMS. We don't post anymore, we constrict ourselves to a line or two in the shoutbox. Finally people will stay away because those few sentences aren't worth coming here.

So post, dammit!

The problem is not the shoutbox, but the lack of ideas, oh High Priest from Handel's Birthtown!

*gives a cookie for every post people write, and a truck of cookies for every new thread*

I wish it'll help a little  :P

Partly, oh Queen.

But the way we use the shoutbox now it's a problem, too. Just read it! So much stuff that could have made great fun-threads and even a few serious ones ends up there: Handled in short, reduced to a few single sentences, without any side threads, lost and forgotten after a week. The way we're using that thing now we'd be better off without it. :(

Cheers!

Mmmmhh.... *thinking*... mmmmmhhh... *more thinking*

Ok, we can warn people to use less the shoutbox or they'll be punished. Don't think about deleting the shoutbox although it will be strictly necessary, righ?  <_<

Well, as Great High Admins, can warn people, send threatening PMs, change their status, etc... let's be a little evilish

I hate shouthbox! Why it has to refresh every few seconds??? Why? Oh God why!?!?! Then I have to click stop and I can't open more windows. I can't read or write in peace, I have to be careful not to refresh, I have to stop it!

I have no problem with the refreshing. I can write while shoutbox refreshes and nothing bad happen. Offy, I think you are paranoid...

I hate it, too, OFFy,

but I have no problem with the refreshing. It refresh independently of the rest of the site, so I can type incredibly long postings without being disturbed by the reloading of the shoutbox. What browser do you use?

Cheers!

Both are fine, the shoutbox is like an eternal chat, while posting is for bigger stuff, like this message you're reading right now. Wow, Markus, I didn't know you hated the shoutbox. And that explains why I almost never see OFFman putting something in the shoutbox.

HI One,

well, I don't seriously hate it. But I dislike it because it bears a great temptation to use it instead of posting, but once you decide to use the shoutbox to say something you have to say it shorter. Thus it tends to dry out this place... and actually this is reason enough to hate it, hate it, hate it.

Cheers!
