I don't think you're allowed to study English.  I think there is a law against it.

It is widely known that you have already damaged this language to such an extent that some still believe it may never recover.

I'll try to avoid that  <_<

Btw... that's not the first day of the course, I enter with it already started. So, I don't think the teacher will introduce himself, but I'll have to introduce myself to the classmates and teacher ("Hello, I'm a cookie eater, and my name is Luth...").

Ah, I see.

In that case I would like you to think of cookies* the very instant you say your own name.

Good luck!

Markus

* You know them. Those tasty little things, quite famous in the ES now. That crunchy, munchy stuff you always think of when you say your name. Cookies, just cookies.

Lesson no.1 from Sirius:

Don't forget to use the phrase "do one" in casual conversation, it will surely impress teachers and students alike.

Example usage:

Mr Teacher:  "Hello Luthien, please can you tell the class why you want to learn English"
Luthien:  "Do one, Teacher-grade"

(this translates as "Get thee away from me, oh teacher who is a 'Grade A' example of being an complete and utter idiot".)

The suffix 'grade' can be added on to any words to add the "idiot" descriptor.  However it should be noted that the term itself although originally an insult, has now also fallen into common usage as a term of endearment, so understanding the context is essential:

"Oy! English-grades!" = "Hey there English holidaymakers drinking too much beer and being obnoxious and annoying!"

"Hey, Therion-grades!" = "Hi there Therion bandmembers, how's it going?"

Now you know all you need to know about English.  I hope that helped.

Well, well, well... already at home, and my first English lesson left! Not as bad as I (and you  <_< ) thought. In fact, I have to thank Markus... hihi: the teacher put some cards with one consonant every one. He put them with the letters hidden, and he turned two cards every time: first one who said a word with those two letters, won the two cards, and if anyone made a mistake, he would remove one card. Well, one of the times the letters were "B" and "Z", and I said (although I didn't remember the meaning   ): "BooZe"!!! Hi, hi, hi... the teacher got surprised of me knowing that word (I told him I didn't remember the meaning, though  ). I'm sure that it was Markus who said that word more than once in NTSMS and so I could remember! Ah! And I won the game! (I was the one with more cards in my hand)

He, he, he! He get surprised a bit, that's not an usual word to learn in an English academy, and he looked weird at me... but I think he didn't got a too bad impression of me. He asked me where have I learnt the word, and I told him "by internet".

Well... my English classes are useful! Yesterday I discovered that... my English is too refined!!! Yep, it's true. I know that poor English-talkers as you won't understand that, but it's this way: I used to use a lot the "whom" (in a correct way, as I saw), but yesterday I learned that the use of "whom" is not normal, although it's correct. Well... today I was going to write a sentence with "whom"  ("whith whom I had problems"), and I finnally changed it to the normal English use: "who I had problems with".

*sigh*

I have to lower my speech

I've got a similar problem with hebrew: I know the alphabet, and I understand very well when I hear it, but when it comes of speaking...  :afraid1:

Good luck with your exam, Luth!  :w00t:

I started my English classes at January, so I have not so long time to improve a lot: the main reason are the forums  :D

The thing that I maybe have fixed a little are the conditionals and some minor skill.

Or how about a German Killer #1? (That could be me!)
I only know as much as some Rammstein songs, and "Feuer Overture/ Prometheus Efesselt"
And for creating sentences I'm so sucky: "Sie will gold der underwelt" that's supposed to mean "She wants gold from underwolrd" right?

Sorry to disappoint you, folks,

but what you said in German so far was correct. This is yet another proof that German is one of the simplest languages - even little children can speak it here. Dunno why you all claim to find it difficult.

Hi friends,

@Eve: yes, I have a mic, I only have lack of... time! Even so, I want to chat with you via msn with mic some day. But... I don't know about if it'll be useful for my First Certificate studies... you know, the teachers are all ENGLISH men, and you know how they are with the ENGLISH (not American) pronunctiation.

Right, Sirius?  :ninja:

@Markus:sure, teach me weird words to  the teacher. With some luck, he'll kick me from the class!  :nosweat:

Congrats, my queen!

This shows us, by the way, that you ought to spend less time practicing English and more time on NTSMS.

Oh, and lacking any better examples I suggest you to drop the word "therionise" in that course to demonstrate how well you mastered the possibilities of word creation in English. (Weirder stuff to come.)

Cheers!

To impress your teachers, recite to them this traditional English verse:

The boy stood on the burning deck,
Picking his nose like mad;
He rolled it up in tiny balls
And flicked it at his dad.

This will ensure that you are held in high regard in your class.

If for some inexplicable reason this fails to impress, call the teacher a "grade A tit".  Please note proper usage is to shorten it simply to "grade", leaving the recipient to remain uncertain of the precise nature of any insult, or indeed uncertain of whether or not they have even been insulted.   Please note that this is extremely advanced English usage.

Got that you grade?!

Next lesson:  Correct English usage of the term "Med" (nothing to do with the sea or with medications)

Good Lick with your exams!

...also you could astound them with your knowledge of cockney rhyming slang!

Here are some examples taken directly from Wikipedia:

Apples = apples and pears = stairs — e.g. "Get up them apples!"
Barnet = Barnet Fair = hair — e.g. "What’s the matter with your Barnet?"
Jam = Jam Jar= Car e.g. "Where are the keys to my Jam?"
China = China plate = mate — e.g. "He's my China."
Frog = frog and toad = road — e.g. "I was crossing the frog."
Rosie = Rosie Lee = tea — e.g. "Have a cup of Rosie."
Thrups = thrupenny bits = tits — e.g., "She's got a nice pair of thrups."

But this is the important bit:  To show them your advanced level of English, you can reveal that you know the one secret that all English people share in respect of cockney rhyming slang:
All people who use it are a bunch of merchants (merchant bankers)

Ha, ha, ha... I've done it again. I've made my teacher to be

Do you remember the game where 2 or 3 cards with letters are shown, and we must say as fast as we can a word with these letters? Last year it was "b" and "z", and I said "booze". Of course, the teacher asked me where the hell I learnt that word. Well... today it has been worse. Three letters:

"h"

"y"

"t"

My word:

THY

Nobody but the teacher knew what it meant, and, of course, he asked me where did I learn this word.

Thanks Markus for providing me so much fun  :insane:

I think nobody can beat me when it comes to killing a language! Man what I'm doing to German... :ninja:

Once on the airport, I wanted to ask something about a plane departure. I knew that "sunrise" is "Sonnenaufgang" so I bravely said "Flugzeugaufgang". They were like this  Btw it's "Flugzeugabflug". Some other time, I wanted to buy an ice-cream on the stick and I asked for "Eis am Spiess". Again they were like this
Ferkel am Spiess: (http://www.vreme.com/g/images/475880_92-02.jpg)

And this was the most embarrassing... We were playing the game of association on the blackboard and I put all my words into bubbles while other people didn't. Somebody asked me why I put the words into bubbles and I replied "Ich mag Blasen" which means "I like bubbles". The whole classroom started to laugh... because when you write it with lowercase "b" like "Ich mag blasen" it means "I like to suck"... :lol3:

Remember "booze", mylady? Methinks we are in dire need of other memorable words which are exceptional, uncommon, yeah even unreckoned in daily use - albeit you might already know a palmful of these.

The question, dear Jorge, arose in my mind due to the fact that the advocators of the "theory" of intelligent design advance the view that an omnipotent creator does not necessarily have to be God.  :insane:
However, is the intelligent designer not a sort of a deity? Or at least a higher power? Because if the intelligent designer was a form of life acknowledged by human knowledge, this implies that that the intelligent designer was designed by something else... Thus still implying the existence of a higher power, not necessarily a God, but still a sort of higher power...
Now what's the belief in the intelligent design called? Designertheism?
Title: Re: English Killer #1 Announcement
Post by: Markus on October 12, 2010, 12:55:17 am
The advocators of this idea dub it "Theory of Intelligent Design", but it is not a theory in the scientific sense of the word because it cannot be disproven. I call them UDOs, by the way: Their construct is nothing but creationism, weakly disguised as a scientific idea and - as you have shown - very easily unmasked. Hence I mockingly call them "Unintelligent Designed Ones".

To resume the original topic: This is not to be confused with weekly disguising unintelligently designed ones!

Cheers!

Too long time with no Official Announcement  :ninja:

Although I've been thinking it for long, now I've finally decided: this June I'm taking the CAE (Certificate in Advanced English) exam. That's the following step after the First Certificate, which I already own. And the last one I'll take, as the next one is unattainable for me, unless I'm going to live for some years to England and study everyday of all-type subjects in perfect English  :fish:

Until now I had it in mind, but I was not sure because my speaking and, very specially, my listening skills, are not very high, but now, after Barcelona gathering, I feel more confident in both skills  :ninja:

So... if I have success in that exam, I'll be able to properly kill English with the knowledge of it!!  :wOOt:

Yep, in this technologic era, I have to wait six months. I don't rememeber how long it was in the First Certificate, but I think it was even more

I don't fear (too much) about the reading/writing/use of English part; I quite fear the listening and, what it is the worse, it's the speaking. Apart from the fact that nerves are required, and I have too much of them, I know they are really tough with this part. I wish I don't say any american word, or they'll hang me from the finger in the highest part of the ship

A few days ago I discovered that there are Reading Groups in English in a very well known bookstore chain here (ABACUS), and I got informed a little about them. You have to pay a fee (not very expensive) and you receive an English magazine monthly, have several club benefits (you can see HERE (http://flavors.me/ecclub#c20/blogger) ) and, of course, you can go to a reading meeting where you have to read a book in English and discuss about it. There are 6 books (one every 5 weeks more or less), and two levels: Intermediate, for people with a rusty English, able to read short stories, and Advanced, for people with a very good vocabulary, able to read long novels, even English speakers.

From the moment I discovered it I wanted to join, but I thought: "ok, I have not the high level required of English for Advanced: they even say you can be an English teacher in that group!!!! But my (readen) English is not rusty, and I do read long English novels very often. So... where I can go?". I finally signed for the Advanced level. Not sure it's the right one, but I know I can do better than read Roal Dahl and similar (Intermediete level). No offense intended, those are good books, but I want to read adult books  :ninja: If I feel a little like the most English Killer One in the group... it would be nice!! After all, I'm the English Killer #1!!!  :nana:

Waiting for some reply to my signing up to the club, btw. And about the read the first book...  :ninja:

Ok, crazy as I am... I'm very seriously thinking in leaving next course my English classes. Yes, I think I've killed English enough, and I can (and will) still read A LOT in English, watch series and movies, and join reading groups. I think English might be so killed... I need to kill some other language. I've still not fully decided, but today I've asked the academy I'm studying English (20 m from home  ), to know the timetable. I was sure it would not fit me, as there are a lot of groups for every level of English, but other languages are not so plenty of students... And the good thing is that the timetable, incredibly, suits me! Tuesday and Thursday from 19 to 20.30. I arrive just at 19h, but there are only 5 minutes from train to the academy. On Wednesday I've yoga, so it would not make me stop.

As I said, not decided yet, but almost...

Although I've not yet signed in for the class (there's plenty of time, as classes start on October!), I've made my mind. Next year I need a real challenge, and German will do! I'm really looking forward trying it. Truth is, nowadays I am going to English class not to learn a lot, but to practice (mainly speaking) and learning something new from time to time. I need to start a language I know NOTHING about, to be a real beginner.

And I'll be able to write in the German part of "Other languages"... At least, to write the equivalent in German of "My name is Esther", "My tailor is rich", "How do you do?"

Great choice, btw - it's a very simple language that even little children over here learn easily. (Just ask Shelley about Oliver...) And you'll be able to read Goethe in the original language or to find the mistakes in "Schwarzalbenheim" :lol3:

Perhaps you can... but my German killing will be unwilling, what will be funnier for me, if I try to say anything in German and you get . Because it will be a real real real   ¬¬.

Whatever... my classes start on October. Don't me expect much of me for the first... let's say... four or  five first years

Yeah, I suppose that those books will enable me to say "hello" and "I come from...", at least!

In fact, I've been told that the books are intended for one or one and half course. Although the explanation of the level is all in German, I could understand that the first 15 units cover the A1 level, and the following 15-30, A2. So, two levels in those books, not bad at all  :cht:

Markus, be ready for next time we meet: I'm willing to discuss with you about the most hidden meanings of the Kabbalah and the newest interpretations on the Faust, in your mother tongue, of course!  :ninja:

Right now, it's Carles who is trying to kill English as few as possible, as he's taking the First Certificate exam. Just now.

*crossing fingers for him*
