Title: Nightwish
Post by: TheOFFman on December 21, 2005, 10:17:36 pm
Which genre is Nightwish? Aren't they power metal. Yes I know that they have(had) female half-opera singer. But they can't be gothic just cause of that. What is gothic anyway? Tristania for example. But I don't know if that genre even exists. Gothic should be just some feeling that band has.

Many people think that Children of Bodom are death metal. But they are not. They play some speed/power metal. They just have those death vocals. It's just vocal, not music.

The main thing is... can a band be called by this or that genre? Isn't every band a genre by itelf? Maybe Nightwish has a part of gothic, a part of Symphonic, a part of Opera Metal, and even more. About Children of Bodom I can't speak as I don't hear them... Of course that a lot of bands can be included in a genre or some genres, but as every band is different, it's hard to say the genre with no doubt.

For instance... which genre is Therion? I think that... "Therion Metal"  :P

COB are considered here as Black Metal
But those genres are to confusing sometimes...

Post by: TheOFFman on December 22, 2005, 01:07:43 pm
They have nothing with black metal.

I think that people missunderstand symphonic. I think that symphonic refers to insfruments that for example Therion use and not vocals.

Post by: deathdancer on December 22, 2005, 08:32:50 pm
But usualy people put bands with keybords into Black-group, or sometimes industrial-group...

Post by: TheOFFman on December 23, 2005, 12:07:03 pm
So, that is not correct. You could put Nightwish into black metal then.

I'm not sayin it should be puted as that, I'm sayin people put it like that

This genre thing is all crazy!

It seems that nowadays everyone makes music and because of the use of combining different elements it falls into a genre that if it does not exist they make it exist! I have heard of this band call themselves Violet Goth Metal...wtf? now everyone can invente a genre! (Once I also heard that Therion was some sort of doom metal)

I think every band falls upon the genres that once were  the ones that only existed some time ago: for example plain heavy, power, death, black, etc. That is were they all come from and I rather not complicate myself. So I prefer to label bands under those even though some band do have added some other flavor to their music.

The music is fine :smilies_musik04:
I don't know how to catalouge it, I would say it's a mix of Symph. and Black Metal.
Anyways, what I mostly care in Nightwish is not the music, but the vocalist Tarja Turunen

I'm not sure which(witch) category of metall Nightwish fall in all that i can say is that they actually have a unique sound and thus they contribute to the pantheon of metall (unlike other so called metall bands) :evil2: oh and tequilla Tarja has much MORE than only a nice voice

or maybe....Iron like what they were talking about in the DVD ? or maybe a new one.... Aluminium ?

I'd classify Nightwish as power metal.

Bear in mind that I'd do the same with Blind Guardian & Iced Earth.

Now note how the three bands are three points on the Clavicula Nox - that, of course, being a clever analogy with which I try to explain that they're not at all similar. Of course, certain aspects are akin between the bands, but that's just what makes them power metal, IMHO. The feeling, in the end, is what defines them. They are what your heart tells you they are.

Your heart can be dead wrong, of course, but look on the bright side - it could just be dead.

...

Right.

Goth? When judging if a band is goth or not, I'm biased towards defining goth in the limits of goth rock and, in my knowledge, Nightwish doesn't have much to do with that. 'Kay, they've got night in their title, but that hardly constitutes a firm goth basis.

The main difference between goth rock and goth metal is, in my experience (considering I'm more into the rock thing, but am a metalhead in my own right), the same as the difference between hard rock and heavy metal. They've both got heavy guitar riffs, bowl-shattering solos and angst-ridden vocals. How do we tell the difference? Well... we don't, really. Sometimes we do - when a band says they're rock or metal, it helps a lot to put things into context. When we consider the goth rock/metal schism, it's a little easier - if it's 80es, it's rock, if it's newer, it's metal. But that's simplifying, really. Technically, the label goth rock applied to a myriad of bands (mostly) from the 80es, that evolved out of the 70es punk scene. Prog punk, in a way. Does it have Andrew Eldritch? Well, in that case it's not self-proclaimed goth, but let's be frank- what the hell is it, then?

But I digress.

I wouldn't say Nightwish is goth. They incorporate elements of goth, mayhap, but not enough for me to even put the label into their genre description.

As for the new Therion, that's prog, baby, with a touch of symphonic. Interestingly enough, it's prog rock by the shape of its elements, but metal by the way those elements are thrown at the listener.

It's Therion, damn it (http://koalicija.net/starbase47/images/smiles/cerek.gif)

The thing is, we're talking about the genre of a band whose music is not completely straightforward. I really wouldn't be surprised if someone claimed Nightwish was gothic neo-folk with elements of Wham! or something obscure like that.

Heya Hawk,

I think that in our context the following definition applies: Music is commercial if and only if it was made to suit the taste of the masses in order to sell as many copies as possible. It's considered a bad thing because this means a sacrifice of artistic integrity for financial success. Don't you agree that it is a bad thing to play stuff you don't really like, just because of the money?

Cheers!

if that's the primary definition of commercial then Nightwish is most definitely not a commercial band... if someone actually cared to read or listen or see more interviews with Tuomas Holopainen, they would notice that everything in Nightwish comes from the heart, not the pocket. People who cannot see that make me very sad.

Okay, we've got a definition. Not a precise one, mind you, but an accurate one :) (commercial in its actual meaning refers to something else, something that encompasses every and all album out there... if the artists who made the album want money in return for the musical goodness it provides)

Bearing the street definition in mind rather than the textbook one, I can't honestly say Nightwish is a commercial band. Evolving or simply changing one's style does not necessarily mean one's only interest is more money. A band doesn't need to evolve into something even more obscure to be considered true - evolution into a more mainstream feeling can be the result of the wishes and moods of the band members, not just of the state of their pockets.

Commercial in this street sense is, thus, not something I like to use. I prefer the term 'losing one's artistic integrity'. It's longer, true, but more to the point.

And no, I don't like that.

I wrote a small song that tells what I think about new Nightwish singer...

Anette Sings

Anette sings Bye Bye,
Children on the street cry,
And birds die in the sky.
Anette on the stage screech.
Fish die on the beach.
Anette is trying to sing,
Flowers in the garden are withering.
Anette sings like Shania Twain,
People's faces loathe in excruciating pain.
Anette on the concert perform',
The town is hit by a storm.
Anette delivers Wishmaster,
And the world comes to a disaster!

My own thoughts on Nightwish are that they were kinda enjoyable, but at the same time they have always been kinda crap too.

The worst thing is the totally nauseous lyrics, that have to be endured rather than enjoyed - I actually like NeMo's lyrics better than anything penned by Nightwish.  Seriously, the lyrics are some of the worst I have ever come across.  :fish:

The music is a little cheesy, but I enjoyed how they mixed Tarja's voice with the metal (ish) sound - it is just unfortunate that it spawned such a host of wannabe drivel trying to recreate the same formula.  The new singer sounds ok to me - but ultimately I really don't care if Nightwish change, evolve or disappear.  They've kinda come up with all the surprises that they were capable of (which were good ones), and now they have nothing new to show (not so good).

Please, can anybody tell me they enjoy NW lyrics?!

She's not that bad, I guess you're just too used to Tarja.... :ninja:

Nope, you guess wrong. She is THAT bad... :ninja:
Listen to Loreena McKennitt (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ixi4jz0Gn4E) (unfortunately haven't find it live), Candice Night (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDWbf_jxNEY&feature=related) (my fave, too bad they never played it on the gigs I was to) and Maggie Reilly (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2p2XM5snTeI&feature=related). And then listen to Anette Olzon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fx1AVypdPUc)...
You see, I'm not "just too used to Tarja's voice". I'm used to a lot of good female voices. :) But NOT to Anette's... IMHO, she should just go back milking cows in Sweden... :bye:

Please, can anybody tell me they enjoy NW lyrics?!

I enjoyed NW lyrics very much! Especially from OB&WM phase when they were about fantasy, astronomy, nature... all the things I like very much. From CC on, they became "more emo"... however, I would never call them emo, because I think they are high-quality lyrics, unlike emo... I think they are more like a poetry... :) And Tuomas had REAL reasons for writing such emotional lyrics. He was in love with Tarja... All those love songs from CC, like Ever Dream, Forever Yours, Feel For You and Beauty Of The Beast were his messages to Tarja. However Tarja got married to Marcelo and then he wrote Ghost Love Score: "You were the one to cut me, so I'll bleed forever..." referring to the marriage... After Once, Tuomas became increasingly jealous, ending with him cowardly kicking Tarja out of Nightwish, via Internet... :mad3:

NeMo, just small recommendation, get 2nd CD (instrumental) and enjoy.

Sorry, no lyrics... :nana:
And I'm pretty busy these days listening to new Tarja's album "My Winter Storm" and the latest Doro's album "Warrior Soul"... They both kick arse!

Hey NeMo, well, if Annette sounds that bad to you, it's your opinion. I don't find her bad at all, but I have to admit that Tarja in CC and Once was also getting pretty cheesy with her less operatic vocals. But hey, that's just my opinion.

As for the lyrics, early NW had some really good ones. The more emotional ones weren't as good, but were still decent. Some of the lyrics in DPP come back to the AFF and OB era, with stuff like "The Islander" and "Sahara"...

It could be... However she can never be more cheesy than Candice Night. :lol3: And I like Candice Night very much! However, it's not easy for her to do what she does. To be in the centre of the stage for ten years, and to be good in what you're doing... but, alas, NEVER to be in the centre of attention... :bye: I was on 3 their concerts. The public was screaming on every move Ritchie makes... But with her nothing... like she was not there...

As for the lyrics, early NW had some really good ones.

Do you know a bonus song from Oceanborn called Nightquest? I think each stanza of it was dedicated to one Nightwish member... :)

Tarja´s album I heard only once by now, I must say I´m not thrilled, songs are some kind of ... flat?

For me they are just beautiful... simple and beautiful... Often you hear only Tarja, or only guitars, or only piano, or cello, or some simple combination of that. And I like simplicity! I think the beauty is in simplicity... :) That's why I like Gothic Kabbalah very much, because it's simple, yet beautiful! Too bad every day there is less and less simplicity in our lives... :bye:

Finally, I'll be on topic! :innocent:

Anette reeks mush more than Tarja used to ...

Indeed! Anette has very sentimental and versatile voice... And what's most important she sings from heart! Not from diaphragm, she probably doesn't even know what's that(:P), but she knows what's heart(), and I tell you she can sing from it! But it is sad she NEVER headbangs! :-[

Slaying The Dreamer with Anette (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_S-79eFcK1A&feature=related)

Can you believe she sang whole StD without a single headbang! :ninja: It's such a pity, because IMHO headbanging is the only thing she needs to be perfect... :P

And on the other side, headbanging is the only thing Tarja does well... even more... perfect!

:bow:Lost Norther Star with Tarja.... OF COURSE!!! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vixMsywatsk)

Her hedabanging is just PERFECT! Too bad her voice sucks... :nana:
:lol3:

Well i dont like nightwish so , burn me.

No, I won't burn you. :) Instead, I will invite you to join my Anti-new-Nightwish Street Team!

Well, then I invite you to join just founded "Nemo's Anti-new-Nightwish Streat Team"! :w00t_jump: Everybody hating at least something pertaining new Nightwish, albeit that's only Tuomas dying his nails black(), is warmly welcomed to participate. His/her job will be just to hate what he/she already hates. :mad3: :wOOt:

When I heard that Hans Zimmer (Tuomas' favourite composer btw :nana:) "cordially invited Tarja to visit him in his studios in Los Angeles, to see how he makes his music"(), I decided to "cordially invite Hans Zimmer to my Anti-new-Nightwish Streat Team, so that he could see how I make my Nightwish jokes"! However, I'm still waiting for a response from him...

And, if this all was not on topic enough, I'll make my post even more on topic! By answering to OFFy's original question from almost two years ago... :)

Which genre is Nightwish? Aren't they power metal. Yes I know that they have(had) female half-opera singer. But they can't be gothic just cause of that. What is gothic anyway? Tristania for example.

I liked both old Nightwish and old Tristania (probably because I'm old too :P). But I would never put them into one genre, because I see no similarities between those two bands (except that they were both "chick-metal" but I meant some deeper similarities :lol3:). The atmosphere their music created were completely incomparable... So if Tristania is gothic, then Nighwish is not... Or if Nightwish is gothic, then Tristania can't be... But I'd rather go for the first thing... ;) Nightwish of OB & WM was for me operatic power metal.

2nd time I quoted myself and still counting... :P

Which genre is Nightwish? Aren't they power metal.

um yeah that's what I've heard too, but I don't think they are. but I agree with NeMo, it would be hard to put them into one genre...I guess they unite elements of many different kinds of metal

(probably because I'm old too :P).

stop with that middle age crisis thing, man!  :lol3:

and by the way, I'm just watching that video with Anette singing Slaying The Dreamer you posted earlier...and all I can say is  well, I mean ok, she can sing those old Nightwish songs if she wants to, but it's just......those songs...should be performed by Tarja and her alone...they just don't fit Anette's voice...
and I know...some people will say...those songs belong to Nightwish, not to Tarja, but still...Tarja was a huge part of Nightwish...and I'll always miss her...

haha, well it's actually hard to tell  :P
the only thing I can say...actually do  ;D  is

Haha, really hard to tell... I'd say it's fifty-fifty... And she is definately very much of both! It's clear for being witchy and here comes the explanation for being bitchy... On MWS deluxe edition there is an interview with Tarja where she speaks about the characters on the album. She said the following for The Dead Boy: "He is one quite creepy creature, that is very bad and sad and so confused in his life...". Clearly @Tuomas. :fish: And she also repeatedly stated how the lyrics are very important to her and how she wanted MWS to have that "soundtrack" feeling... everything Tuomas has said in interviews for years! I think she's ripping off her old friend... :P And like all that wasn't enough, she also befriended Hans Zimmer, Tuomas' favourite composer! Who knows what also happened there... I mean between Hans and Tarja... You know, Marcelo is a busy man, owning a company in Argentina. He's probably often away because of the business... She really is a bitch! And I like her even more because of that... and also because she is a diva. I like bitches... and divas... and to be honest, I like everything Tarja is! 8)

Btw Mystique, did you know that Tarja acts The Dead Boy also... just look at "his" face!

LOL!!! What else is she to come up with!? :lol3:

and by the way, I'm just watching that video with Anette singing Slaying The Dreamer you posted earlier...and all I can say is  well, I mean ok, she can sing those old Nightwish songs if she wants to, but it's just......those songs...should be performed by Tarja and her alone...they just don't fit Anette's voice...

By Tarja preferably but NOT only by Tarja. ;) In the case of need, they could also be performed by other trained singers... but NOT by Anette! :bye: In my opinion nothing should be performed by Anette... except for The Imagination Song from South Park:

Including hit-single "I eat alone"! :lol3:

I eat alone

I eat aloOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOone,

Nightwish released new single called Erämaan Viimeinen. Here is the picture http://static.metal-archives.com/images/1/7/6/9/176929.jpg it looks great for this time of year  :)

There are only 2 songs, this is copy-paste from metal archives:

Erämaan Viimeinen' is 'Last of the Wilds' from the "Dark Passion Play" album
with Finnish lyrics sung by Jonsu (Johanna Salomaa), the singer of Finnish rock
band Indica.

The instrumental version of 'Erämaan Viimeinen' is almost identical to the
original song, 'Last of the Wilds', because that song originally is an
instrumental. The biggest difference however, are the 'stormy samples' you can
hear at the very beginning of 'Last of the Wilds', they are absent in the
instrumental version of 'Erämaan Viimeinen'.

I really like it, at first listen it was nothing special to me but somehow it stuck in my head and I can't stop playing that song.

So I'm kinda running out of ideas...Sorry NeMo...

oh, and btw, I recently got that famous DPP instrumental cd... and yeah, I totally like it...

and NeMo, that video with Anette & Tarja singing Higher than hope...it's the best! haha!  :lol3: I'm totally laughing at Tuomas...I mean just look at his face! THE BEST thing ever hihi...I mean...not his face...the expression of his face, to be more precise... cuz his face is not something one should admire to   ;D
haha

God damn it Mystique, why did you have to spoil "my special powers" of being able to predict Anette's ditching several months in advance... :P

Btw, now that Anette is to be jobless, someone should inform her that Christopher likes her voice...

Well, Chris has got his tastes.
He may like her voice but I don't think that adding her to the line-up goes into the direction he wants to take. (Though I could always be wrong, you can never be sure of what to expect from Mr. Therion)

I don't think that adding her to the line-up goes into the direction he wants to take.

And why do you think so? Chris wants Therion with the next album to become a show band (I didn't say chopping woods on the stage, honest to God )... That means he needs singers having, beside an excellent voice, a huge charisma and a striking stage presence... ;) So I think Anette would be a perfect choice for him! :P See for yourself:

I went and saw Nightwish with Tarja back in ...oh, 2004?  I dunno.

But even though NW aren't my fave band they were good live, and I gotta say that Tarja's performance was flawless.  Really impressive live performance by any standards.

That video...  well, hehe.  You can sign me up to your street team on the basis of that video!  :afaid:

You haven't posted much... to be honest soulsmith, the only post of yours about Nightwish I remember is that about Tarja lubricating her vocal chords during the song Wild Child  with Marcelo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tLYl9SBxgI)!

Perhaps it is true. At that time, a bunch of discussions were made on different forums so, I am probably wrong about posting "Anti-Anette" replies on the official Therion forum.

But still, know that you have one more man in your army against Anette the Evil Witch. :P

@Triocton & soulsmith: Welcome to the team...
:yeha:

@Mystique: you're in also, of course if you want... If anybody has earned the mebership there, then it's you! :)

And let me rant a bit more about Anette... In the first time, I thought Tuomas chose the worst singer out of those 2000 that applied to the competition out of jealousy towards Tarja... to revenge her by showing her how she wasn't important for the band at all... But then I read some rumours that the record company made Tuomas hire Anette by threatening with cancelation of DPP contract... Now I'm curious what is the truth? ??? But I'm sure something is very fishy there... :ninja: Who knows what is going on in Tuomas' big head? Perhaps not even he!

And I'm also curious whether Tuomas is to record the last gig with Anette for the next DVD called "End Of An Era *again*"... or even better "End Of All Hope"!

with or without education..sorry but Anette's voice is rather something usual..it's without that soul, the caracter we got used to when Tarja was singing..and her stage performance is something I could do and I'm a complete anti talent for performing in front of people...I'm not saying it should be the same like when with Tarja but at least with more spirit in it..not just pretending that you enjoy ...but to show all your love for music on stage..you know what I mean?..

@saphira: Welcome to the team! :)

Now I have an important annoucement for all my fellow team members! Tobias Sammet is in the team too! :wOOt: I have read his interview in the last issue of German Metal Hammer where he said the following:

Quote from: Tobias Sammet
For new Avantasia, I wanted to avoid artificial inflated orchestral parts, that only sound cheesy... As well as typical Finnvox sound where drums are brought to the threshold of being hearable... :ninja: That is what many do nowadays but for me that is not metal anymore! :bye:

Btw Finnvox Studios are studios in Helsinki where Nightwish recorded their albums! ;) After reading this, I could only say: In your big face Tuomas!!! :nana:

That was a joint interview of Tarja & Tobi... they were probably sitting on the same couch. So I guess Tobi wanted to flatter Tarja. ^_^ But who wouldn't want? When she is Witchy & Bitchy at the same time... 2 in 1!

@soulsmith: can you imagine Anette singing Ghost Love Score?!

hmmm..I can't imagine that..because Anette although she's trying really hard..she's not singing ..she's whining...(sorry Anette)..

I just bought my ticket for Nightwish, it's the most expensive and the ugliest ticket ever! Well it's not the original ticket, it's eventim ticket but at least there should have put Nightwish logo instead of NIGHTWSH written exactly like that.

:afaid:

You'll find out eventually... :P I hope it's Nightwish after all... ;) In that case I would ask you to do me a small favour... Go to the first row and shout "We want Erämaan Viimeinen!!!" on the top of your lungs during the whole concert... ;D

I have never made New Year resolutions before, so this one is to be the very first one! :ninja: I have decided NOT to rant about Nightwish in the year to come! :) What is too much is just too much... it would be very lame I spend the rest of my life ranting about Nightwish, wouldn't it? So I need to stop, and New Year is a perfect time for that...

no thanks :nana: i may not like how she dresses but i like how she sings :wink2: and besides that, i've never seen tuomas so happy as in salzburg, he was literally glowing, which means things must be going on very well inside the band  and if tuomas is happy, nightwish is happy, which means i'm happy :yahoo:

i've never seen tuomas so happy as in salzburg, he was literally glowing

Forget about that... happy... glowing... that's very subjective and he also might have acted! :nana: And even if he isn't acting, he could be happy because of $... ;)  Let me ask you something more objective, almost mathematically precise - Did he headbang during the gig? :P
Title: Re: Nightwish
Post by: MissSwan on January 02, 2008, 03:36:27 pm
ofc he did, a lot  and it's not subjective, not with tuomas anyway, when he's miserable you can see it, even if he tries to smile -_- and he doesn't give shit about money :mad3: shut up

OFFy, I'll upload the vids and pics I took of Amorphis (hopefully tomorrow) and open a topic about them, if there isn't one yet... btw, they were FANTASTIC (even though they played for only 30 mins :bye:) Tomi is one of the best singers ever

Btw Misti you've just given me idea to do something... It has to do something with the song Dead to the World (Tot zu der Welt ;D) and I'm to make it as soon as I return to Berlin... expect new posts from me in that photo-topic! ;) Speaking about returning, I'm stuck here in Prague for 2 days already! All the buses to Berlin are FULL! :mad3: I can return only tomorrow... but I don't complain that much, today I visited a great baroque concert - Bach, Händel and Vivaldi! ^_^ ^_^ ^_^ ^_^ Although being dead for a looooooooong time, they still totally rule!

:wOOt: woah that's awesome NeMo! I wish I had the chance to see it as well cuz I'm a huge fan of baroque music...maybe more of classical music, but I love baroque as well (let us remember Monteverdi's L'Orfeo  :bawl:  )
Anyways, I'd say I hope you enjoyed, but NO DOUBT you enjoyed

Jeez Misti what a post! :o It's PERFECT... at least that is how I imagine perfect posts! It is long, with multiple quotes, with caps, a lot of smilies, embedded Nightwish ranting, and what's the most important it is a SPAM! :wOOt: But not an ordinary spam, a high-quality one! I'm forced to boost your karma one more time, but I have to wait 1 hour because the board reports an error...

Anyways, I'd say I hope you enjoyed, but NO DOUBT you enjoyed

Like hell! ;D They played my all-time favourites. The Four Seasons from Vivaldi, Feuerwerksmusik from Händel and some short and famous pieces from Bach! And Feuerwerksmusik is one of mine absolute favourites, I like it more even than Wassermusik (which is more famous btw ;)), I used to drug with it back in the high-school! Need I say more? ^_^

haha, omg, this is one heck of a spam  :nosweat:

Totally... 8) But hey, that's the best and EASIEST way we (you, me & the voices :P) stick to that resolution... by ranting about non-Nightwish related stuff... :lol3:

Let me see... something new... something new... Did you know that she sings "swerds" instead of "swords" in the chorus of Elvenpath? And I think she also sings "wheere" instead of "where" somewhere in The Riddler...

btw, have you noticed how Tarja in The Elvenpath sings
And the bath under my bare feet...
...The Elvenbath

It's particularly conspicuous on the first DVD FWTE... There she says "This is Elvenbath!" while announcing the song... LOL!

I haven't seen your posts for sooo long time I've thought you are already dead... to the world... ;D

Never fear, even in death I will remain a solid supporter of the street team!  :ninja:

Er... on topic, I agree with OFFy's original post that Nightwish are a euro power metal band.  It was only the vocals that were distinctly different from most power metal-type bands  ...not so unique these days tho, eh?  ;)

OFFy mentioned Children Of Bodom in his original post, and actually there are plenty of similarities in riff-structure to be found in Oceanborn/Wishmaster-era NW and Hatebreeder/Follow The Reaper era CoB.  Clearly the overall feel between these two bands is very different - but there are also plenty of shared influences going on.

The reason I emphasise the "euro" power metal, is that the US interpretation of "Power Metal" can be quite different (thinking of '80s bands like Savatage, Metal Church, Meliah Rage etc, even Agent Steel).

I remember too! :wOOt: I remember EyesInMist said that you were not welcome because you had Nightwish sig! ;D Speaking about EyesInMist, I checked his profile and there it said that he was originally from Dubrovnik, but at that moment being at the Neuropsychiatry in Varazdin. He just forgot to say whether he was there as a doctor or as a patient? :lol3:

Sirius! :fish: You have just quoted yourself and committed a double posting crime at the same time! :wOOt:

I shall fear not, for I need dead solid supporters too! :wicking: Because Tuomas is dead too! :wOOt: Read the lyrics to Beauty of the Beast:

"I'm a Dead Boy, who failed to write an ending to all of his poems..." :bye:

@Triocton: if you, by any chance, meet Tuomas in hell, you'll know what to do... :fish:

And about the lyrics again... he says he failed to write an ending to all of his poems. I'd say he's gotten a second chance for that! :wOOt: Now when he has found that young and talented singer... what was her name again, Anette? Yes Anette... :P Can you imagine him remaking all the old songs and adding a stanza at the end of each, sung by Anette! :lol3: That would be like a cream on the top of the tart!
Mmmmmmmmmmm... tarts... :wOOt:

Er... on topic, I agree with OFFy's original post that Nightwish are a euro power metal band.  It was only the vocals that were distinctly different from most power metal-type bands  ...not so unique these days tho, eh?  ;)

I agree too... operatic (euro) power metal I say. I remember I had called them Stratowish on their forum for some time... I wanted to tease the forum majority who claimed they were gothic... :pock:
:P

Enough on topic, let us go off again... and it's OFFy's fault this time, as corroborated by his nick! :nana:

NeMo, if you knew me better you would know that I am obsessed with showering.  :)

Haha, I like showering too... especially I like to shower loooooooooooong, at least half an hour, usually an hour! And this year in Berlin even longer 'cause I'm pretty much bored here... :ninja: When I lived together with my birthgivers, we had a quarrel every time I had a shower! :-\ They were saying to me "why do you have to shower that long, you are unnecessarily filling our cesspool! :mad3: Look at us, we finish in 10 minutes!"... I couldn't finish in 10 minutes even if I wanted... I use a shampoo for strengthening hair roots that needs 10 minutes to act... yeah I have weak hair... :bawl: not to mention that I like to sing under the shower! :wOOt: Speaking about cesspools, that's really a bummer for people living in the village... :bye: It's usually located in the yard behind the house, and since the yards are often small it is near to the house. And it gets full from time to time. Then you need to call the special service to come with a tanker to pump all the sh*t out... and after that the yard and the house smell like feces for days... it's worse than hell... imagine you have to sleep in such a surrounding... :afaid:

Beto Vazquez & Tarja - Sadness in the Night (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-CAe2hMjdQ)

@Misti: you MUST hear that one! I think you will simply love it... :wink2:
Tarja's voice is so DARK, DARK, DARK, DARK, DARK... ^_^ ^_^ ^_^ ^_^
And the lyrics are sooooooooo depressing... :'( :'( :'( :'(

Sadness In The Night

[Lyrics: Max Ditamo - Music: Beto Vazquez, Danilo Moschen]

In the night I feel the cold of my loneliness
Cold that embraces my heart
Draining my strength to fight
Only to breathe this suffering

Tell me why?
Why must I bear this cross
So heavy for my soul?
Please hold me in your arm

I am the keeper of his heart
I was sent to take care of his sweetness
Never I'll forget his love
Never I'll forget the light
That shone in his eyes

Let me fly, let me be free
To stay with him beyond this life
Run across the sky
Let me see the sun again

Let me die
Give me the light
I'm waiting for death to knock on my door to release my pain
My sadness in the night

Let me die
Give me the light
I'm waiting for death to knock on my door, to release my pain
My sadness in the night, forevermore

Every day I dream of sunlight in my dark room
I want to find a reason why
Justify my reason to stay alive
Within this pain

Tell me why?
Why must I bear this cross
So heavy for my soul?
Please hold me in your arm

Let me die
Give me the light
I'm waiting for death to knock on my door, to release my pain
My sadness in the night

Let me die
Give me the light
I'm waiting for death to knock on my door, to release my pain
My sadness in the night

Let me die
Give me the light
I'm waiting for death to knock on my door, to release my pain
My sadness in the night

The song (and the whole Infinity album too) are just  I must buy the second part... ^_^

16th time and still counting...

I have more from Tarja... :) I've decided to spend all your megabytes before 1st February so that you could study that geography! :nana:

Tarja Turunen - I Walk Alone - LIVE @ X-TRA Zürich (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9W0rStg13fA&feature=related)

There are two drummers on the stage... Yes, TWO! LOL!!! When I saw that I just couldn't stop laughing! I mean I've seen that a band has two guitarists but two drummers!  :lol3:
That's how it is when you have a little brother that is unemployed... can you imagine that? :P Or wait, maybe you don't have to imagine at all! :ninja:

Btw MissSwan was on that concert... *jealous smiley*

@MissSwan: I watched some live clips from Zürich (from that guy EurythPINKs) and I must say that I hate you! :P

why do you ask?

We also have 2 bassists (the main one being me of course ) 2 guitarists (soon to be 3 hopefully) and 1 others (that is keyboard, trumpet in some cases), oh and one of our drummers also plays sax.

and the lyrics...  :bawl: :bawl:

Why is it called illusion fields
When love builds only grief
All your agony and pain stays the same
Till you see

That destination shows you legends long extinct
Rumours are told about a hero kind and skilled
I’m burning at love’s stake and that’s the end I feel

But suddenly my seer is on my side
Bringing love while forgetting his pride
In his eyes I see there’ll be better times along my way

Ok here I go... the song is neither of Nightwish nor of Tarja so I'll be off topic but I don't give a f*ck! ;D

Misti, prepare to cry... :'( *gives Misti a tissue* The song is very sad... allegedly, Hansi witnessed a car accident in which a boy and a girl got killed and that has inspired him to write the song. :-\

Demons & Wizard - Fiddler on the Green (http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=tIltTeDsO60&feature=related)

The song simply rulez... *shivers*

The fiddler is DEATH! :afaid: Here are the lyrics... :'(

Fiddler On The Green

Sad voices they're calling
Our precious girl she can't be gone
How bitter this morning
When daddy's darling
Went out and started her day

Wasn't there a dream last night
Like a spring never ending
Still the water runs clear
Through my mind
On the field I can see a fiddler
The fiddler on the green and the sad boy
I took him too early
Would you mind
Would you mind
Would you mind
If I take you

To be with you
To be with you
To be with you
To be with you

The sun seemed bright
The air was clear
The air was clear
A trick of light
Turned red into green
She saw the light
Her face was pale
Her body smashed
Her beauty's gone

Isn't it a shame
The reaper said
He is quite alone here
And still waiting for you
Oh I really did fail for the first time
Spoke the fiddler, poor old fiddler
The fiddler on the green
The fiddler on the green
It would be nice:

Take my hand

Just hold my hand
I'll take you there
Your pain will go away

oh, and on topic...kinda
what do you think, which song is better, Damned and Divine or Damned Vampires & Gothic Divine?  It's kinda the same but to me, the second version(which is also a bonus song) is much, much better...

I prefer Damned Vampire & Gothic Divine because it has heavier guitars. I like the combination of Tarja's voice and heavy guitars, like on The Seer! ^_^

And back off topic again, I found this (http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=csZ-_3TKXuY)! Some dude dressed in black called ObsidianLord(:ninja:) playing Fiddler On The Green on piano... awe inspiring... And also this (http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=CByeTG9o0eE&feature=related)... two guys from Croatia playing the intro on guitars...

Should we open a topic for Tarja discussion? :lol3:

Speaking about trolling...

The old D&W is ok , new one is better though

I like them both, but I somehow prefer the old one... because it is darker, more raw and has the songs Fiddler on the Green and Blood on my Hands!

have you ever heard of the word commercialisation?

Not until recently, when I read an interview with Nightwish headman, sorry my mistake(:P), Nightwish mainman Tuomas Holopainen. He was ranting something about "the commercial factor of the Internet" and its compensating effects...

Quote
Once There Was: Another important issue in the music business is that illegal downloading is widespread. Do you think it has an effect on you guys like income-wise or anything at all? You as a big-selling artist and you as a not-so-big-selling artist…

Tuomas: When it comes to us, I think it definitely has an impact, but it also goes both ways. So I think in the end it doesn't really hurt us that much. I would like to think that our fans are still the kind of people who want to buy the real thing with the real cover and booklet and everything. And it's also good advertising, you know. You don't have to go to a shop and listen to the album, you can just go to the Internet, download a few songs and then be like, "OK, this sounds good." And I really think that they want to buy the whole album. If there are 10,000 people in the world who don't want to buy it, who are satisfied with just downloading it, it doesn't matter because the commercial factor of the Internet compensates it.

Will somebody please explain to him that even Metallica failed and that Nightwish is not Metallica... ::)

Btw, here (http://www.metalfromfinland.com/news/2008-02-03_13:06/NIGHTWISH+Mainman+Discusses+Illegal+Music+Downloading) is the link to the interview. ;)

edit:

So...  I decided not to get the new NW album or the Tarja album.

Can't be bothered any more.

I do have all the previous NW albums though.

I also found a brief clip from the concert when I saw them in 2004...  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xn2XJfhqyQc (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xn2XJfhqyQc)

I must've been stood right next to whoever made this clip!  Coz that's where I was in the crowd too.  As you can see, it's from Tarja's red coat phase. Lovely.

@Triocton: Lucky you they performed She Is My Sin! :wOOt: That song rocks... one of my all time Nightwish favourites... and it's equally good live. :) Tarja did some nice headbanging there... "jackhammer" tecnique. Back at that time she had already abandoned "poser" tecnique but still didn't venture with doing "windmill"... ;)

:bow:Lost Norther Star with Tarja.... OF COURSE!!! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vixMsywatsk)

Her hedabanging is just PERFECT!

She used "jackhammer" techique here several times, but she also used "windmill" tecnique 3 times! At 1:11, 2:55 and 3:05! I personally find "windmill" tecnique the hardest and the most impressive. You need to have the longest hair for that one, and I always feel dizzy after doing that, so I need to repeat it in the other direction... and that's weak... lame... ::) However she always does it in the same direction! I don't remember seeing her doing "windmill" back in Nightwish. There she used "poser" left-right tecnique most of the time which she doesn't do anymore!

31st time and still counting...

Some reviewes from todays live show:

- She definately f****d up older songs
- I would never pay this money again for such show
- She sings good in lower octaves... but in higher she is simply bad
- The band did everything they could... even she - too bad she is not as good as Tarja
- Too much money for such short show... even if it was amusing...
- Why he asked us to go to the doctor?

they should play around 20 songs..
they are very big band...

one of short shows I have seen and headbanged at was TÝR who played 13 songs (including The wild rover song which one wasn't on the setlist but we forced them to play it :P :P :P)

Hmmmmm.... death to all pop metal bands... but the list will be tooooooo loooooong - most of finnish bands will be there - I think that the easiest way to kill'em all will be making them to listen some grindcore mixed with brutal death - their heads will surely explode...

Nightwish - ca 0,50 euro for a minute of live show - I think that even The Rolling Stones in this way are cheaper  :disgust:

I like Annette better. When Tarja was with Nightwish I could never understand WHAT she was saying. That and Tarja sounds more like an Opera singer rather than the vocalist to a gothic metal band.

So true...

Well it is funny how powerless his voice is. But still it's nice, unlike his soul... jealous soul... vengeful soul... :fireevil:
What is the most funny to me in that songs is the blend of Tarja's and Tuomas' voice in the chorus (Tarja's one being tuned down 2-3 times)... :ninja: :lol3:

I bought a Czech rock/metal magazine today and they have always annual action for readers ... where they put the best album of last year (so 2007 for now) and many others... there is always also a question "What band do You adore now but hated before?"

There was:
I. Nightwish
II. Soulfly
II. Foo Fighters
IV. Dream Theater

I can understand... the new album made many people like Nightwish - I am one of them.  ;D

I do not think that she was more to opera - I mean - she can sing both, opera and also in such band. She has great voice but I just don't like it. :)

I like the new album cause I think that the whole band, the musicians, got more space... and also there is no "pushing out" dominating voice now... so one can concentrate on both - singing and the music around...

Anyway I am not sure if I would go even if I had money... cause I never liked concerts much. Too many people around for me. For me is stressing even to travel by underground... That's why I would go only to band or such which I really love - like Therion, Björk, Apocalyptica, bla bla bla... :)

You don't like the new voice? Still forgetting the singer's name  :-[

Woah, PINK every evening. Well, 'Aspirin' is now the ultimate hit.

Unfortunately I haven't watched PINK for more than a year! :ninja: Due to the objective reasons, I do not have it here in Berlin... :bawl: :bawl: :nana: :bawl: :bawl:
Btw I remember Zeljko Joksimovic had a song of the same tittle! I think he should sue Seka Aleksic!
When I watched PINK last time, Dodji i uzmi me (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=eRg2PcVN4W4) was an ultimate hit! :P That song has always reminded me to Therion because Seka sings about Atlantis in the first verse. :lol3: Notice also how her hair is covering her left boob! :P

"Spremas se da izadjes sa drugovima,
A ja ovde ostajem sama.
Ko licemerni gad uvaljujes mi pricu
Da za damu nije kafana
Ne radi mi to, jer ja sam za ljubav stvorena,
da ne cuje zlo da ti nisam potrebna..."

Tarja could cover that one what do you think wolfshade? Choreography too... ^_^ ^_^ :P ^_^ ^_^

You don't like the new voice?

My new sig! :wOOt:

heh..I like ABBA..it was the first band I listened to ( and that I remember)..that was when I was about 5 or 6...but i don't think that anyone can do it better that they did it..not even Tarja or Anette..well, ok, except Therion..they can do everything!

dunno about Seka..but I do know about PINK channel  and that's just...  :disgust:  (I apologize if I have hurted someones feelings)

Wow..I mean about the sound! I was hoping that they will take a good care about it because mostly even if the concert could be perfect our technicians f*ck up ..this time they did their  job well! And even Anette is not that bad as some said..maybe she sounds good just in this song.. can not judge just on a one song..
oh nevermind those chicks..I personally don't like that people talk all the time on a concert!!!.. they were just like look at that and look at this..   :roll-eyes:  :roll-eyes:   :roll-eyes:

They played The Siren  and it sounded great! And the snow started falling at the end of Nemo, that was the best thing I have ever seen at concert, the fire efects were great too and some other thing that fell from the "sky". I am not going to write concert review, I just wanted to say a few things. You can check videos from you tube, but that is not even close to the feeling of being there. Too bad that Pain played only a few songs cause they were great.

Too bad the weather was really bad that day, it was raining and then snowing and raining again, the last thing I remember were the big snowflakes!  ^_^ Next time I come to Ljubljana I have to go to that big hill on which is some kind of fortress in the middle of the city. Lucky, we found some really nice place to eat and drink. They actually have hot-dogs called enocevka (single barrel) and dvocevka (double barrel)  ;D And park surrounding Hala Tivoli seems nice, too bad it wasn't sunny.

You've just said (in a rare form of German only found in the city of Bristol, England):

"I hate Nightwish, they're shite, I denounce them entirely!!  ...but I do love the sound of that Anneke's voice, and I marvel at her dancing."

 :fish:

E5150 sorry for this post but I just couldn't resist... :fish:

Anneke ≠ Anette!!!

This is Anneke:

And this is Anette: :bye:

  :ninja:

Here is what Tarja says about Anneke:

Quote from: Tarja... Tarja Turunen & Sharon den Adel
The Gathering - "In Motion #1"
Tarja: Sounds like Anneke van Giersbergen. It really is her? Must be an old song. Her fantastic voice seems very young in this one. Anneke is one of my favourite female singers.
Sharon: The Gathering! I like "In Motion" very much. That song is so melancholic. Mandylion is amongst my favourite albums from our fellow countrymen. The Band had it's breakthrough with this album in the Netherlands.

The whole interesting interview in the form of "track-attack" with Tarja and Sharon can be found here (http://www.metalfromfinland.com/interviews/303).

And here is what Tarja says about Anette:

:censored: :censored: :censored: :censored: :censored: :censored: :censored: :censored: :censored: :censored:

And one more difference... I have gotten an autograph from Anneke and I have NEVER gotten an autograph from Anette! God please forbid such a thing ever to happen! :afaid: *knocks on wood*

The only thing they have in common is that wolfshade likes them both...

And also the 10th anniversary of the appearance of Oceanborn! It's interesting that the mid of 1990ies brought up 3 bands with very talented female singers - The Gathering, Nightwish and Tristania. And the mid of next decade brought up 3 x :bye: and two ":ninja:" replacements. Hey folks, yesterday I gave to new Nightwish's album Imaginaerum first 2 proper listens and I have to admit what OFFy said. This is brilliant.

The band is definitely "growing up". It's more sophisticated then the albs before (in my personal opinion of course : )
I am pretty much looking forward to play it on cell phone with earphones when nothing does distract me in the city traffic unlike home.

I am also pretty much looking forward to the movie Imaginaerum.
