Title: National music
Post by: Luth on October 13, 2004, 09:29:50 pm
It can be an interessant question for me. What do you think about the music of your own country? I refer about music, traditional or not, sung in your own language, with a special "feeling" for the inhabitants of your country. For instance, I'm not talking about metal sang in english, altough it can be played by a... spanish, norwegian or australian band.

Do you like it? Do you feel identified with it?

I like our national metal bands. I support them 100% ! I think they are talented guys (they sing both in English or spanish). I just hate the fact that metal scene is not very welcomed in here and producers only care for other national music. For example most popular music here is a genre called "cumbia"  <_<  I really don't enjoy this music.  Their lyrics they are so bad! really meaningless and same phrase repeates over and over again.

I will always support our national metal bands!   :D

Hail!!

Well... here, the thing is pretty much like EReshkigal said: there isn't much metal support, as ppl here go more for like commercial stuff and all that new pop or new metal... which honestly, I don't like at all. We do have here some good bands like Delirium, Profecia (perhaps the best ones IMHO) and there are others like Blasfemia or Nosferatu... which I don't like  :P  And another thing... here ppl and mostly young ones like this horrible style that's called "Reggeaton" or "Playero" which is like a mixture of latin rap with Reggae music... honestly, I don't like it at all... I just can't stand it     Folkish honduran music is actually fun... but it's a very repetitive ryhtm... and gets you bored very fast...  anyway... metal rlz!!

Hail to all!

Exactly same here! Cumbia, regeton (or however it's written), pop.... >=o( But actually metal (also rock and punk) support is growing quite fast...

Hehe!  Difficult for me to ignore Metal sung in English when I'm from England! :D  :P

Here in England support for metal is very poor.  Most people like pop crap and in my circle of friends I am the only person that likes metal.

This is from the country that (IMHO) invented Heavy Metal.  I love Black Sabbath and surely this is where it all began!! (and I still identify with Sabbath lyrics). And Judas Priest!  Check out 'Exciter' for maybe the first ever Thrash Metal double kick way back in 1979!!

Nowadays the only decent stuff from Engaland is done by Anathema (not really metal any more!) and The Meads Of Asphodel (spaced out black metal with a hint of 70's rock).

There are a couple of bands here that get attention (Cradle of Filth, Akercocke), but they kind of suck really.  Englands metal glory is long since past, I love stuff from Scandinavia and central Europe.

Hail to England! (for glories past)
Long Live The Rest Of The World!!!

I really hate some music in my country.
There are some really really good singers. But most of them sing some crappy pop stuff. We have some genre that you never heard before. I don't know how to describe it. I would rather listen hip-hop, pop, anything all day than that songs. We call it cajke.

Music in Canada... Well, being 15, everyone around me is simply saturated. By American pop-culture so it is all this hip-hop, rap, and pop crap. I am glad me and my friends have been able to stray away from pop-culture. Me and my freinds, we are all industrial, metal, and real punk (Since I have SHARPskin and punk friends, though I only like Dropkick Murphys)

Hi ppl!

Nowadays, music, popular music at least, is the reflection of the, still, unstoppable cultural globalization.
So, after these "too serious" words, I must say that  IMO each culture MUST keep its characteristics in all areas, including, of course, music. I know that the mixture is unavoidable, and it´s...healthy too, but being conscious of what are the roots of each one.
About "traditional" music here, in the Basque Country, it´s too difficult to find something "pure". I can write about traditional music instruments, that are mostly used in this kind of music. Wind instruments like "alboka" (like an horn), the "dultzaina", flutes, (Oskorri is quite famous band) and something imported in the XIXth century from Italy, the "Triki-tixa" or diatonic accordion, played together with the "pandero" or tambourine. Percussion like "txalaparta" used centuries ago for stablish communication...
The "typical" basque music, when is something to acclaim, would be played only by the Triki and the pandero. Sometimes companied by a rythm section (Alaitz eta Maider, Etxamendi eta Larralde...). There are several solo singers that sing a capella (Erramun Martikorena, from the french part of the Basque Country), "bertsolariak" ppl that improvises verses with a rime, or with an acoustic guitar (Mikel Laboa, or my fav Benito Lertxundi).
But maybe the most important element is the language, Euskara, that makes all different from anything.

There are also basque hip-hop singers, but they usually sing about politics. :P

Sorry but my english is not so well...

See U!

mmmm...... Colombian music *rubs chin*....
In such a diverse country, it is very difficult to define a "national music" but I will try. In the andean part of the country, the traditional music (bambuco, guabina, pasillo, etc) includes "guitars" of all kinds (six-strings, twelve-strings and even an eight strings guitar called bandola) and very few drums or flutes. I do respect this music because it is very hard to play and because it remainds me my roots. Although, the lyrics are usually cheesy as hell, they talk about love, about how beautifull the Colombian girls are (which is true :D), and about how nice and peaceful our country is (*sighs*).
In the caribean part of the country you can listen from cumbia (the real one!) to reggae. I have more problems accepting this music because it is very noisy and repetitive. Although from the lyrics point of view you can find it very interesting, especially the very old vallenatos (acrodions, guitars, maracas and congas) from Escalona. We are also very prolific in salsa, which used to be very good back in the 50's and 60's but not anymore. Now it is just a repetitive stuff with "funny" or sexy lyrics.
In the Pacific part of the country, the music is more like the traditional African music (much of the descedants of the slaves live still there). I do respect A LOT this music, it has its own energy and it is very special when you listen to it in the proper context.
And well, we also have the modern pop stupid colombian music which i dislike A LOT. It is void and senseless. Actually I would give the same description posted by many of you when you were talking about your contry's music.
Concerning Colombian Metal, hell, we have a bunch of very good groups especially in Bogotá and Medellín. They are not known outside of the country but you should give them a try if you can:
Eternal, Underthread, Masacre, Petilencia, etc.

Well that's all for my part. Perhaps other fellows Colombians can give further advise :).

About music in my country, I like my national anthem, I´m not such a great fan with folkloric music, but I think they do a great job, and is very popular here such as reggaeton, pop or happy punk.

There´s no support for metal music, so I don´t know many bands just that inside the goth scene such Anabantha http://www.anabantha.com/... (http://www.anabantha.com/...).

Also is this band, Hocico and Amduscia, but as they are hard electro, I don´t know if you guys coul like them, anyway, there´s a lot of music here for all the tastes...

www.symbolicmetal.com - The mp3 played, but there was no sound!  :(
www.dismalgale.net - the website is gone!  :(
www.dreamlore.net - I couldn't find any music clips!  :(

I checked out the other two:
Starfall - I thought they were a decent power metal band, but power metal has to be really special for me to like it.  There were only 2 tracks and I think that a good power metal band needs variety, so not really enough for me to judge.
Tiara - They've got some real potential, they are kind of like early material by The Provenance.  I liked both the growls and the female vocals, and I always think it's cool when a band sings in their native language.  The recording quality isn't great, but overall they are well worth a listen and worth keeping an eye on.  :)

Gaita in Venezuela?   I thought it was only in Galicia and Asturias (Spanish regions), Scotland and Ireland: those places where celts lived long time ago. Maybe some galician people emigrated to Venezuela bringint their music?

It's called gaita, but it doesn't really use the instrument we call gaita in Spanish. It's more like some wierd guy singing so fast you can't understand them to the rhythm of a guitar. (pretty similar to some Spanish folk songs, if that is what you meant with the Spanish regions)

Some bands from my home country:
underthreat (http://www.underthreat.com/) (melodic death)
Athanator (http://www.athanator.com/athanator/) (thrashy stuff)
Twilight Glimmer (http://www.twilightglimmer.com/index/news.htm) (catchy death metal).
There are some samples at their websites for those who are interested. :)

I'm not much into Romanian music at all, and Virus isn't in Romanian metal either, so we're strange to the topic.

General Romanian music market is very young and poor, to say so. Most the "artists" try to copy American models, so you can imagine the situation...  :brutale_smilies100:

Anyway... I'd like to be able to tell you some Argentinian bands, but my sister's bf (and my Arg music provider, as well :D) is mostly into punk!

I'm not surprised at all about that Luth ;). A.N.I.M.A.L. it's a death metal band with lots of growlings and fast-furious riffs.

That would be another reason for not hearing about them, as I'm not interested in death metal! :nanana:

I'm NOT! I deeply dislike death metal. Ok, I admit "Brother Moon" is nice, but that's it.

You people think u have it bad with your French and Russian hip-hop and Serbian folk music???? Try walking in my shoes 4 a while!!! The country that i come from(Greece) once had a fairly good musical past, but it is history now.Nowadays the only songs u hear are either songs that go on and on how did their girlfriend/boyfriend left them :bawl: or how happy they are in their new relationship :yeha: and yadayadayada. And that covers only the so called "traditional" music!!!Do u want to listen to something scary??TRY GREEK HIP-HOP u won't find another type of that music that matches the american version!S  C  A  R  Y! :afaid: Now some might say "hey dude what about all theese greek metal band like Rotting Christ or Sarrisa??" i reply to that yeah sure! But believe it or not those must FIRST make it abroad and THEN become (in)famous here BELIEVE U ME!!!!!!

The Balkan Scene was mentioned earlier, so I don't think I need to mention the national music here in Croatia. Well, actually, I do, because here by national everyone assumes you mean Serbian national music (which is fascinating considering that everybody here on the ex-Yugoslavian territory is such a die-hard patriot that they tattoo their country's coat-of-arms on their  left buttock and shave their pubic hairs so they depict the said country's greatest hero). In the northern regions of Croatia (from which I so proudly [*sighs fatalistically*] hail), the folk music is more or less about getting drunk or how much Jesus is great (preferably after you got drunk). To the east of Croatia, in Slavonia, you'll find IMHO the best folk music - it tends to be reminiscent of the music in my region (or is it vice versa?), just less intense - it's more or less about getting drunk or how Slavonia is great (preferably after you got drunk). It's mostly mellow, whereas the Zagorje-based music (that's my region) is more heavy. It'd be thrash if they used electric guitars instead of physically challenged acoustic guitars.

To the south and west you'll find Dalmatia. Oh, you'll find other regions too, but geographically ignorant as I am, it's all Dalmatia too me. (which usually pisses sea-faring folks to beautiful extents *grins*) Dalmatian music is more or less about getting drunk or how much the sea is great (preferably after you got drunk).

Erm, and I think that's that. Three regions and a general lack in good taste to rule them all.

Now, the popular music here is... well, I thought stuff like that was banned at the Geneva Convention, but, then again, that's my aptitude towards history for you.

The lyrics are mostly romantic... about getting drunk or how much women are great (and/or suck - preferably after you got drunk).

As was mentioned by my homies (*makes a rap pose*), the sad thing is, we've got some great singers. Gibonni is, as was mentioned, one the best but the man left rock way behind him... which is sad, really, but even now he's better than anything else that crawled from Croatia. I always claimed he and Goran Karan would make great heavy/power metal singers.

Scream for me, Croatia! SCREAM FOR ME!

But yeah, wishful thinking.

Maybe if I ask them politely...

As for the Croatian metal scene... erm, it exists? The rock scene I know is alive and kicking from time to time - some fine bands can be found if you take the time and listen through a bunch of crap you'll be forced to adhere to ('cause there's no other way of finding the good stuff - it's like cocaine, really).

*shrugz*

I was talking about traditional music. Zadruga & Osmi Putnik (Rising Dream I haven't heard of) are rock bands - and I did say we have some good rock bands, but that they're hard to find.

I will present Croatian music in a bad way if I deem it unworthy of a high praise. I'm not a nationalist and don't give a rat's ass about the country, so tough luck on that front :P

Did I lie at any point (or, rather, spoke untruthfully)?
