Hallo!!
I'm very happy and proud to announce that soon, very soon, I'll kill German as well as English!! (better even, as I really have no clue about German language right now!!). The 2th October I'm starting my German classes... BWAHAHAHA!
You know I work in a publishing house, right? It happens that the editorial has relation with several other editorials (one big one, linked to Hachette, and all the "little ones" as a kind of children...). One of those children is Larousse, which have several books about languages... and as I've a nice discount, I bought three books otherwise would have me costed a lot more. And today they arrived: a Deutsch-Spanisch and Spanish-German dictionary, a book about German verbs, and a grammar. They look nice, so new, so untouched... so virgin :fish:
I've looked them quickly, and I've spotted the phonetical list. Ok, Markus, tell me: who the hell decided to have SO MANY VOWELS??! Spanish has 5 vowels (yes, I know, a number ridiculously low), Catalan have 8, French have 16 (quite a lot!). But German, if I have counted it right, have 25??!!! Ok, ok... a lot of them are the short/long option of the same one. But still... 25??!!! You want me to REALLY KILL German, don't you? :ninja:
Nahhhh, it will be fun. Except when I decide to write in that topic in German. Then, it will be a nightmare. Fore sure :ninja:
PS. I suppose the title of the topic itself is alredy a little killing. For the few things I know of the language of Goethe, it has cases. So, I suppose "Deusch" is correct, but "Killer"... I'm not sure it's the same case. Whatever. Pleased to kill German (in a linguistic way). :biggrin:

The case in the heading is correct but the composite isn't. :disgust: In German you can never, never create a composite by putting two nouns besides each other; you really create a single new word out of them. Also the abbrev. "nº" is not used in German, so the heading should read "Deutschkiller Nr. 1" -_-
So this is quite a good start at killing German! :thumbup:

"Ich studiere Deutsch"... if your teacher taught you that, then please tell him: To a German that means that you study the language at a university, probably full-time, in a wide range of aspects and in great theoretical depth in order to achieve an academical grade. Your participation in that course would rather be described as "Ich lerne Deutsch".
Of course, if you need any unusual words, any slang or bad words in order to amaze or scare your teacher, drop me a line.

Btw... I suppose my teacher right now is simplifying a lot, including the meaning of "Ich studiere Deutsch". I mean... she's German (in that school, every teacher is native of the country s/he teaches about), and I suppose she might already know the difference, doesn't she? I imagine the verb STUDIEREN is one of the first to be taught, and don't make things more difficult they already are :bawl: :cht2: :med2:
Mmh... thanks for you offer about slang, colorful words to impress my teacher. I think I'd rather wait a little... at least until I'm able to think a single short German sentence without getting a headache. Will you wait? :lol3:

Hallo meine böse Königin und der oberste Priest!
Ich möchte Ihnen mitteilen, dass am Sonntag (und am Dienstag) habe ich ins Theater zu gehen. Es ist ein Ereignis mit der Schule verbunden - mit Vorträge deutsche Sprache.
Es ist ein Prager Theaterfestival deutscher Sprache.
Am Sonntag est is Darstellung "Der zerbrochne Krug" von Theatergruppe aus Burgtheater Wien und am Dienstag "Die (S)Panische Fliege" von Volksbühne Berlin. :-)
Glücklicherweise wird über die Bühne Untertitel in tschechischer Sprache angezeigt werden. :ninja:

So, for "The Broken Pitcher" I am sorry to say - I did not have much of it, cause I could not see on the subtitles (badly situated illuminating engineering - or badly situated seat, depends how you look at it, but if they placed it bit higher, I could see the texts with no problem)... Otherwise it was nice, sometimes I understood a bit but surely we did not get all jokes as we do not have the insight.
The Spanish Fly has even more funny translation in Czech: :biggrin:

Ok, here there is my report about how my Deutsch classes are going...
It's frustrating!! Ok, well... that's not the best way to start, and it's not the main feeling. I like the classes, I think our teacher does quite well, and we repeat the things over and over again until some of them, at least, stick in our mind. The frustration comes because every class our teacher asks each of us to talk a bit. We can talk for long time or only one sentence (today, one of my classmates said he hadn't anything to tell, and she didn't pressure him). But what we try to explain... it's so hard!!! We have almost no vocabulary! Our knowledge is so basic we can only talk in present. If we try to say anything... either we have the dictionary with us, either we constantly ask her for the vocabulary, or we stick to some very basic sentences...
Ok, stop complaining!! Truth is: I'm glad I decided to study German. I like it, and I mostly enjoy, although I feel sooo clumsy, and I feel I'm learning so slowly. For now we've learnt to introduce ourselves, talk about our family, work, colours, numbers... We've learnt some verbs (all in present), we've started with Akkusativ... All basic, but all necessary if we want to set the ground to a good learning!!
Ah! And next Unit we'll learn about the clock. As a curiosity, the teacher told us that, although the way to say the time is usually quite difficult, we won't find it soooo difficult: it seems in Catalan, we say the ours in a similar way than German. Markus, Shelley... we have something (linguistically speaking) in common!! :hug2:
Personal ideas: knowing English, in order to learn German, is very useful. And... knowing English, in order to learn German, makes things really diffucult!! Contradictory? Yes, but... It's very clear some common ground. A lot of words are very similar o equal to English; a great deal of them, if you know something about linguistic changes, are easy to unerstand they are related to. BUT. But pronunciation. That's THE problem. Ok, German is easy to pronunce. Unlinke English, it DOES have rules. And they are not complicated. Unless you know English beforehand and you tend to pronounce the English way. Let's say "Mutter". Let's say "Nummer". "U". Bad English "U" that in German is quite plain "U" and in English is more like an "A"...
And... of course, the BIG problem. Damn genres... why the hell German has to have THREE genres? And why must you know it in order to produce ALL the sentence???? :ninja: Ok, Spanish and Catalan have genres too. And they can be as random as German. That's the problem: what in Spanish is masculine, in German can be Masculine (if I am lucky), neutral (if it's not my lucky day) or feminine (if it's definitively a terrible day). Wouldn't it be easier being as English? No genres, all objects are "it"? Do you like to make all German learners crazy??? :ninja: :ninja: :ninja:
Ok, that might have been in the "Let the steam out" thread. But it's not, beucause not all is bad, because I, in fact, enjoy the classes, and because I'm even allowed to kill German at class, and I'm only corrected, no punished for it! Imagine!! I can kill the language in public, and I'm not alone!! :fish:

that sounds as if you enjoyed the lessons, even though they're difficult. That's how it should be, right? :) And I'm glad that you enjoy learning my mother tongue.
I can imagine that the genders must be horrible for you. There's no logic behind them; you just have to learn them along with the vocabulary. Sure, that makes learning more difficult. (And yes, in fact I enjoy spreading some madness every now and then und ich freue mich sehr, dass es dazu nur ein paar Deutschstunden braucht.)
So enjoy the lessons big time, kill no Germans outside class und mach immer brav Deine Hausaufgaben. Ist das alles? Ähh, nein, nicht ganz:

ich sehe gerade einen Bericht im Fernsehen, dass viele Spanier in Deutschland Arbeit suchen. :( Das ist sehr schade, dass sie keine gute Arbeit in ihrer Heimat finden. Deutschkurse sollen deshalb sehr beliebt sein. Sie sind auch sehr teuer - in Madrid kosten die billigsten Kurse 400 Euro im Monat. :blink:
So teuer ist Dein Kurs nicht, oder?

Ha, ha... no problem here. No 400 €, for sure! It's 83 per month, three hours (not two) every week (an hour and half every Dienstag and every Donnerstag). I suppose the courses you've heard are intensive ones! I'm studying German in the same academy where I studied English... just on the second corner :nosweat: It could be a lot cheaper if I went to an Official Languages School, but I've not (yet) one very near, and the pace is better for me here. I've heard that in the Official Languages School, apart from a lot of hours at class, you need even more hours at home. Luckily, I'm working, and I've some (few little) personal life :ninja:
Markus, it's true that a lot of people is studying languages, mainly German, to go abroad to look for a job. It seems that Germany is asking for a lot of technicians, and there is a lot who can't find a job here, or have lost it. I can tell a little by my classmates: there's a couple who has a son who is now living in Germany: he went there for a job, and now he has his life there; there are two who have just finished the studies and, as they have no expectation to find a job soon, they've decided to study languages and improve their skills in case they need them; one plans going to Germany to work in one or two years... I think I'm the only one who studies German for the sake of knowledge and absolutely no other reason :bawl:
Ok, today I've skipped my German class. Xiquet was playing guitar in a band formed in his music school, and I had to go and see (and record) him. But On Donnerstag I have class... and there will be a test. My first test. Not exactly an exam... according to the teacher, it will be useful to her to see if she's going too fast, of too slow, or she has to insist more on a certain subject... We'll see. She is still not used to my killer German :cht:

So many Germans are speaking "Denglisch" these days: Either they are filling Engish words into German sentences because these idiots believe that would make them sound smarter. Or they are using Germans words in a wrong sense, influenced by literal re-translations from English.
Want an example? "Welcome to" means "Willkommen bei" in German. But the idiots are saying "Willkommen zu" because that's the literal translation of the English phrase - and they're not even aware of it. :disgust: What a stupid and uncreative way of killing German, isn't it?
Your ways of killing German will be much einfallsreicher, won't they, oh bösartigste aller Monarchinnen?

Dear Markus,
I think that's common in a lot of languages... In Spanish you can find it too, with a little difference: as Spanish has no common ground with English, words are usually not adapted, but directly translated. It is so "cool" to have a "meeting" with the "manager", for instance! (all "" words exist in Spanish or Catalan, but are vey usual in their English version). I'm not sure what's worse! :disgust:
Btw... Last day we learnt a little about German clock. And, indeed, it has some similarities with Catalan (not with Spanish!). For instance, we divide the hour in quarters: at 7.30 we would say "(two) quarters of EIGHT". Does it rings a bell? :nana:

because 7:30 is spoken as "halb Acht" ("half (of) eight") in German. BTW, there is an interesting difference between Eastern and Western German (i.e. former GDR and old Federal Republic): 7:45 is "dreiviertel Acht" in Eastern Germany - "three quarters (of) eight". Western Germans would say "viertel vor Acht" ("a quarter to eight") - in fact, many of them don't even understand the Eastern German version, while the other way around it's usually understood. Similar with 7:15 - "viertel Acht" ("quarter (of) eight") in the East vs. "viertel nach Sieben" ("quarter past seven") in the West.

In Catalan we're more like Eastern Germany, then, as we say "one quarter of eight" (7.15), "(two) quarters of eight (7.30) and "three quarters of eight" (7.45). Our teacher told us about the difference between different parts of Germany, although she said "they say xxx, although I'm not sure, I think they mean xxxx by that". So, it's true: between different Germans there can be missunderstandings (at least, regarding the hour!) :fish:
Why are we not more simple, and say "a quarter past seven" (7.15), "two quarters past seven" (7.30) and "three quarters past seven" or "a quarter to eight" (7.15)? Answer: difficult language is fun... especially if you want to draw the students crazy :fish:

Well, Swiss German may be a German dialect, but it's so far from High German that most Germans wouldn't understand a Swiss. In fact, Swiss German is often subtitled on German TV.

Well, according to my teacher, in Germany there are two ways to say "vacations": "Urlaub" for children and "Ferien" when the vacations are from work. But in Switzerland there's only the "Ferien". "Urlaub" means when you are temporarily out of jail... sorry, I don't know the expression in English (perhaps "penitentiary leave"?). :evil2:

This is an ancient German verb that is not in use any more today and that's heavily used in Wagner's "Walküre".

It means "to choose". Only the form "erkoren" ("chosen") is still in use in modern German. Such as you surprised your English teacher with "thou / thy / thee" you can make your German teacher go :blink: with this one.

Usually our teacher started the class asking us to say something in German: what have we done, what will we do, any anecdote... Lately, she asks for this at the end of the class if there's time, not at the beginning. Yestarday, when there were only 5 minuten left, she told us to talk about anything: fragen, explaing something... Then, I said "well... I've prepared something... a little thing". She said "aah, gut!!". I took my little paper (from the little notebook with the logo of my editorial, as I wrote this just before ending my free lunchtime at work), and I began:
"Gestern habe ich ein neues Deutsch Wort gelernt" (pause to see if I made a proper use of the past tense. Good... it seems all right). "KIESEN". (the teacher have a face that asks me to repeat it) "KIESEN. Das ist ein..." (stop. Read carefully. I clear my throat. Nervous laugh). "... ein altertümlich wort". (Teacher asks me to repeat the word. I repeat. She asks me to buchstabieren das. I buchstabieren das Wort again). "Das ist oft in Wagners ,,Walkürie" und das bedeutet "to choose". (I explain that this Wort is not used anymore. Teacher absolutely agrees). "Mein Deutsch Freund sagst mir. Er geht zu Opera und das Word was said a lot".
(now I realise I said "Opera", in English, and she didn't even corrected it. I suppose she was too flabbergasted to say anything :lol3:).

Thanks! After the hard work, I managed to only commit one (really bad :lol3: ) mistake.
I suppose for native speakers it might be hard to imagine what is for a learner to try a correct text... it's like a puzzle!! When I did Latin, back at Highschool, I thought it was like a puzzle, because there are cases, and you had to know what case was every element and then put it all together according to that. I was mistaken... Latin was easy!! Try German!! Really, it's a pain in the ass:
For a simple sentence you have to know the genre of the noun; then, know what function it has to use Nominative, Acusative or Dative (not Genitive for us yet). If you doubt between Accusative and Dative you think about the function, right... and when you know it, then you realize there's a preposition there!! Ok, look out what case follows that preposition... ok, I already know. But... what was the genre? I've already forgotten!! Ok, I already know the genre and the case, that's good, I have a lot! A lot? No!! I want to use the Past Perfect, but I don't know what form that verb takes... Ok, I've looked for it and I already know. Now, what type of verb is it? Separable or not? Ok, I already know... ARG! It's reflexive!! (just studied those! :ninja:). Where have I to put the "dich"? Or is it "dir"? Ok, ok, I already know! Now it's all easy: put the subject and the verb where they belong, don't forget to change the order if there's an adverb first ("Heute habe ich", not "Heute ich habe"), put any adjective or adverb needed, don't forget any article (was it masculine, feminine or neutral?) and the correct case, and... voilà!!!

Those figures have a name: for the Calella ones, Quirze (male) and Minerva (female :lol3:). But they don't represent anybody in particular... almost every city or village in Catalonia have a pair of giants (and other figures like "bigheads" and "little giants"), and they usually represent the people of the place in some way. For instance, if in the city is formed by a lot of workers, the giand may represent somebody in working costume. Usually they wear an antique costume, like nobility some centuries ago... althought there's a lot variety. In another very-touristic city (Lloret), for instance, the she-giant is a blond, sung-glassed tourist :nana:
The past weekend in Calella was the annual meeting (every year one different city), and more or less 400 giants were gathered: not all, but a good representation!! There were even 4 from Costa Rica (yes, Catalonia is not the only one having this kind of giants :cht: ). It was very nice and we could see a lot of different giants and figures... If I can, another day, I'll make a post about this tradition (in fact, I can create a thread about our national or local traditions!! What a good idea!! :wOOt: :wOOt: :wOOt:). But not today, for sure...
Btw... I didn't know about German "Ernst", but there's an English word for it too: Earnest. Not a very usual word, but there is a work by Oscar Wilde which plays with that name: The Importance of Being Earnest (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Importance_of_Being_Earnest). Last class we spent all the time playing with a German Scrabble. Of course, it was really hard, as we have no great vocabulary knowledge, but it was fun.
There's a game for mobile phones, Angry Words, that it's the Scrabble. I use to play in Catalan, Spanish, and sometimes in English. Now I've added as a contact one of the students at my class, and we're playing in German too (we have the same level... near to 0,0000001).
I'm very international with Scrabble, right now :ninja: :roll:

It seems on 25th I've an exam. If I pass (teacher says nobody from our class is going to fail :unsure:) I'll have an official certificate from our academy that I have the A1 level. I have no time to study until... well... exactly until 25 (when I start my summer schedule at work, and I've more free hours at evening). So, I don't think I'll be able to study much :bawl:

Ok, exam done! Am Donnerstag I'll know how it went but... it was easy, a lot easier than it could have been. And the teacher is a good person and helped us a little: two weeks ago she asked us to write a postcard with some items on it. Then, she told us "we better memorize it". What I've not said is that the exam was really easy. From the 15 units we did, the exam was focused on the first part; there were very few questions about cases... The teacher told us the exam would have been more difficult if it was her who made it (the exam was prepared by the academy, not the teacher).

here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moin) you can find the etymology of "Moin" meaning "good". But then again, the German wiki-page says that the real etymology is not clear and that some serious researchers suppose "Moin" to be derived from "Morgen". :wacko:
I do speak Markusish - how did you guess? :wOOt: That's very close to High German but you can hear some traces of the dialect of my hometown. Like "ooch" instead of "auch", "kannste" for "kannst Du" etc. No special greetings, though: "Guten Morgen" or "Morjen!", "Hallo" or perhaps "Tach!" for a very brief and casual "Guten Tag". But mostly a friendly informal "Hallo" or a friendly formal "Guten Tag" - unless you're a friend of mine, in which case you get a hug. :)

I'm looking for a word, as I must say something about me in class. And I've been looking for the german word of "metal music", but I'm not sure of the exact translation. In one dictionary, it says "heavy metal" but, of course, heavy metal is only a part of metal music. In another one it says Blechbläser, but I'm not sure... as in another one, it says that Blechbläser is the "person who plays with a metal instrument".

"Heavy Metal" is occasionally used as a generic term for all genres of metal music. But usually - especially among metal-listeners - "Metal" is used as the generic term. In both cases you don't add "Musik" - "metal (music)" is just "Metal". By the way, the pronounciation is the same as in English - the words were simply imported from English.
Some examples are:
"Hallo. Ich bin die allerböseste Königin und höre gern Metal."
"Metal ist meine Lieblingsmusik seit ich drei Jahre alt war."

Actually, there is no fixed grammatical gender for "PM" or "private message" because it's a word from a foreign language that's not integrated into German. Neuter would work, so your sentence was correct! But mostly one would use it as feminine because the translation would be feminine ("die private Nachricht").

I'll be practising German, and he'll be practising Catalan (which he already writes a lot better than a lot of Catalans, after being here for a lot of time.) He's 54 and he also speaks Spanish, English and French, and he's started with Arabic a few time ago...

Aaaahhh... so long time with no spam in this section... Well, it's not spam, but let's bring it to life again! At least, a little.
As I already said in the shoutbox, I've just signed in to an intensive German course. I feel that I barely improve during the regular course (few time to study at home, perhaps the teacher, hard for me to dig for motivation on weekends...). So, I looked if any intensive course is available at afternoons during July, when I work only until 15h. Not in my academy, but there's an Official Language School in Barcelona where there is. And there I go!
It will be one month, from Monday to Friday, von 16 bis 20 Uhr. Vier Stunde per Tage! Not bad! (specially when I work from 8 to 15h...). I'll be arriving home very late, so I already know I'll have no life during this month in the workdays. But I really think this can be the way to really improve in German, at least, enough as to feel I'm learning something and enjoy it a little more.
Thursday 19th I have to make a test to know in which level they put me in. I'm supposed to be able to get the A2, but I wouldn't mind repeating the A2 this month and learning it better... It's not up to me, I'll know the 30th, the first class day.
So... if anytime soon I start speaking (bad, terrible) German, it's because of the course.

It's the title of one of the parts of the presentation I have to make. I'll explain about other Oktoberfest out from Germany (for instance, Calella! :biggrin: ).

I see, Luth. Well, I'm not sure a German would understand "Das Oktoberfest durch die Welt" properly; I think "Das Oktoberfest in aller Welt" is closer to what you want to say...

Today I've made the last class... We got our marks, and my group (and another one) have made the presentation. My marks: 9 out of 10. (1 point for making all the Hausaufgaben and all work required).
The presentation? Sehr gut!! Better than I would have thought (not perfect, of course...!!!). And sehr lustig! Tomorrow I'll explain... People laughed and... disguised a little... bwahahaha!
Now, I must continue practising and improving my German... and trying not to loss my English! When I want to say something in English, German words come to my mind and tonge... :disgust: :mad3: :nosweat:

As I told you, yesterday was the last day of my Sommerkurs (80 hours in 4 weeks... not bad!). It has been a very rewarding experience, and I think I'll do it again next July. Yesterday, my group had to make the presentation (each group is formed by 3 people). As it was the last day, and we chosed a festive topic (Das Oktoberfest), we decided to make it a little more... festive! The other groups made a normal Referat: they used the powerpoint, each of the members explained something with the aid of the images, and nothing else. We... changed the rules a bit. I think it was fun, so I'll explain a little more!
First of all, we asked the teacher for 5 minutes free, and he granted it to us. We sneaked out of the class, to "disguise" a little: a pair of Zöpfe each of us, like Münchnerishe Frauen am Oktoberfest. So, we entered the class with the plaids (curiously, one of us is very blond, the other very red, and I am very brown-haired), and teacher and students were like... wow! That'll be fun! Soon we started the explanation, with a little theatralised dialog:

In that moment, we gave our fellow classmates a newspaper-hat with a colour feather each man, and two paper plaids with a clip to each girl. Including the teacher...
With everyone "disguised" (including one guy who decided that the hat was too few, and put on the plaids too), we started the real explanation. First, the other two girls, who explained the history of the Oktoberfest, and how it is, and so on. Then, my turn. I know there are some grammatical and ortographic errors but... this was more or less what I said, with the image of the power point included:
(BTW... I changed the title of the first 4 slides: instead of "Wie neuerig!", which I was not sure if it was right, I wrote "Kuriositäten").

More things to point out... On Thurdsday, after the exam, we watched a German movie... perhaps you know it? Shlussmacher. It's a comedy, not bad... of course in German, but with subtitles... in GERMAN! I must confess I missed some important things, but I think that I got the overall of the movie. My first movie fully in German... :insane:
And, to end (by now...): my English is in danger! One day, just after the 4hours-class, I was waiting in the platform for my train, and a tourist asked me, in English for the train she had to take. I explained her in English, of course... but instead of "yes", I kept saying "ja". Instead of "no", "nein". And, instead of "but", "aber". I was crazy!! All the words more usual come to my tongue in German instead of English! And the tourist... she might have thougt "Oh my, I've asked the wrong person. She obviously speaks more German than English!".
Of course, the reason was the 4h class I just had, all in German, and all the previous days with the same schedule. Later, I've been able to help other tourists, and I kept my German away, with a little effort... but it made me realize I must practise my English, specially my SPOKEN English, or German will interfiere more and more...
Maaaarkuuuus... We must meet again! Next time we meet, I'll be able to kill German a lot more than previous meetings!!! :innocent: :ninja:
PS. I explained it all in English because it's too long and too complex for my poor little German. From now on, I'll try to write here shorter posts, but auf Deutsch! :biggrin: :biggrin: :biggrin:
