Title: Signatures
Post by: Markus on September 27, 2008, 04:51:06 pm
Hi folks,

I've noticed Lucy's current forum signature, and that reminded me that our signatures are worth a topic of their own.

So let's start with this one: "US banks' balance sheets: "On the left side there is nothing right, on the right side there is nothing left." Love this one, it's just my kind of humour.

Cheers!

Thanks a lot, Markus...

It was one of the "funny spam" we are sending between us, bank workers, on the bank's local email system. :nosweat: Especially funny because of the banks' and insurance companies' problems right now... :innocent:

Talking of signatures, Kristina,

what does "שמע ישראל יהוה אלהינו יהוה אחד" mean? I can see that the tetragrammaton appears twice and that the sentence begins with a "Sh...", but that's as far as I get.

שָׁלוֹם and cheers!

Hey panx,

I can only see that this girl just received a facial

I know that being 13 is a difficult age. Some of us manage to get through adolescence with some dignity while others have serious trouble. But here at NTSMS we're willing to help you. So I'll tell you an adult secret: In some places graphic language like yours is considered appropriate, while in others it is not. Hint: Right here you're just making but a fool of yourself.

Cheers, anyway!

A facial is a cosmetic treatment of the face, commonly involving a variety of skin treatments, including: steam, exfoliation, extraction, creams, lotions, masks, peels, and massage. Normally performed in a beauty salon but it is also a common spa treatment.

My signature is a mix of a song and of a book. You may remember Xeper-I-Set of Dissection, and you may remember the book Nightside of Eden of Kenneth Grant.
CXI =111, a number of Set, and also my number using runes.

Salute!

Yes it is.  :)

However, I suspect you won't understand why, so I offer you a response that you may be able to grasp:
hey panx she looks just like yor mom after a visit from my sweaty fat dog lol.
etc

Aw bless, you probably think you're on a quest now don't you?  that's so sweet.

Well, what can I tell you? The banner is a little bit of Photoshop, with a pic from Assassin's Creed, a game I was literally addicted to a few months ago. (I should make one for Fallout 3 :lol3:)
As for the text, I came up with it while bitching about my grades in algebra.
Title: Re: Signatures

Hi folks,

my current signature reads: "To create a little flower is the labour of ages."

In case you haven't deciphered it yet, it's to honour three persons: William Blake, who wrote down these words in his inspiring "Marriage of Heaven and Hell", Charles Darwin, who shewed us the scientific truth behind them and whose 200th birthday occured yesterday, and of course our dearest evil Regina Helianthorum.

Cheers!

Markus, would you please give some hints about your current signature? :)
Title: Re: Signatures
Post by: Markus on June 09, 2009, 09:57:16 am
Sure, Lucy! :)

"Why sleepst thou, Eve? Now is the pleasant time, the cool, the silent..." is a line from Milton's "Paradise Lost". The serpent whispers these words into Eve's ears to wake her up while Adam remains sleeping, then he lures her to the tree of knowledge and talks her into tasting its fruit. These words often come to my mind when I'm in a garden, a park or a grove in a gentle summer night, seeing the silhouettes of the foliate trees against the moonlit sky.

Cheers!

Haha, :D You are close! Very very close! Actually You even get some very interesting connections in czech lang... but more later in the evening :) in ten minutes I have to go to catch the bus for my meeting with the doc.

Translated literally it means: Jean, bring me a window, I want to look into the garden! It comes from one famous Czech fairytale my favourite actually. This sentence has even on Like group on facebook

Jean is  .... every servant used to be called Jean :D Because it simply was like that in history many times.

About Your signature One...

"All men are intellectuals, but not all men in society have the function of intellectuals" -Antonio Gramsci

Are You suggesting that some men are simply just drones? (bee drones)
Title: Re: Signatures
Post by: The One on December 11, 2010, 02:10:18 pm
It is referring to mankind in general.
We all have the potential and the ability to be intellectuals because even the most monotonous and simple labor takes some forethought and whatnot, we're not just trained brainless monkeys, even if at times we do seem to be like that. However, not everyone in society has the function of being an intellectual - someone who has power and thus influences others. Just as not everyone has the role of being a laborer.

Some explanations of mine ;)
I always use this signature as my personal text. When you see this signature/personal text and this avatar, whatever this guy's name is, it's me  :lol3:

"Tlön, Lemuria, צִיּוֹן, Lisboa, Stockholm, Лю́берцы, Venezia."

By these place names and what they mean to me, introduce myself in a concise way  :)

Tlön: Borges; Universe; create
Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius I can't decide if it is my favorite short story, but it influenced me most.
Borges is the writer who did surpass language.

Lemuria: (need any explanation?)Therion; myth

צִיּוֹן: religion; history

Lisboa: Fernando Pessoa; introspect
O Livro do Desassossego one of my favorite books.(I love both of the two Chinese versions )
From that I got a new sight of contradictory in spirit.

Stockholm:  kent, Nordic music
kent is the first Nordic band I fell in love. And latter I began to adore so many Nordic musicians that I began to learn Swedish :)

Лю́берцы: reminiscent (maybe some politics)
Knowing this place because of Lube. I like their songs because of this reminiscent feeling which is familiar but wasn't experienced in reality.
The whole Moscow had many other meanings to Chinese in political aspect.  And talk about politics...it's a bitter issue but can't be avoid to China. State system is something brands a person a whole life time. No matter to think about it or not, everyone is affected.

Venezia: Calvino, memory about hometown
Le città invisibili another favorite book. The first time I read that Marco Polo said, every city he talked about had the pieces of Venice, and Venice is the city he would never talk about. He was afraid of the words would make the memory stiff that finally he would lose his hometown. This part directly impacted my latter writting I think.
Title: Re: Signatures
Post by: Luth on December 13, 2010, 07:31:11 pm
Of all those, Tlön (toguether with Lemuria) is the one I am more familiar with. I have the luck of being able to read Borges without translators... and I can't think about translating any of his works (which I have all, although not all read yet). They have sooo several meanings, it's so a huge language playing with  :afaid:

Yes, I think it's difficult to think about another form of masterpiece like these. And about that all I could say is, without the original language form his works are still magic

I'm not going to insult you but you can get insulted by going to the Barcelona stadium wearing the wrong shirt.

Markus, how do you say sorry in German?

That's "Entschuldigung, bitte" ("Please accept my apopologies") or "Tut mir leid" ("sorry").

Cheers!

Markus

Venezia: Calvino, memory about hometown
Le città invisibili another favorite book. The first time I read that Marco Polo said, every city he talked about had the pieces of Venice, and Venice is the city he would never talk about. He was afraid of the words would make the memory stiff that finally he would lose his hometown. This part directly impacted my latter writting I think.

I do not understand this, could you explain a bit more if it's not a problem?

No problem :D
In Calvino Le città invisibili Marco Polo introduced these citied he had traveled to Kublai Khan. At a part which is close to the ending, Kublai Khan asked Marco Polo why he never talked about his hometown Venice. Then answer which had been quetoed above every city he talked about had the pieces of Venice, and Venice is the city he would never talk about. He was afraid of the words would make the memory stiff that finally he would lose his hometown(I translated the meaning from the Chinese Version, I hope I didn't lose any important meaning :ninja:) shock my view of telling stories.
Stories and experiences is part of the teller, the way to tell and thing which was hiden is as much as, if not more than, thing which was revealed.

Writing is a part of my life(well, writing in English is quite another things :-X at least in the current period for me), I have treasured this knowledge from Calvino.

And Venice no doubt refers to hometown and memory of past in this book, which is important to everyone, no matter whether their influence on one is good or not.

So that's the reason I put Venezia in my signature :)

Hehehe but I only have the correct shirt which I bought at a certain stadium, too bad it was empty when I visited it.

That's "Entschuldigung, bitte"

Thanks, I know that word but didn't know how it's written. I could of course check the Google but I felt I should ask you!

Thanks, it sure is something to think about. I mean I am so attached to my home town, I can't imagine myself living anywhere else but there are so many things that does not work here.

Ooops, folks,

I forgot to explain that signature you asked about. Sorry!

I've noticed that just now, as I opened this old thread in order to ask: What does your new signature mean, Kris?

Cheers!

I remember when Chris asked TS to think about the name of DVD, he said working title was Celebrators of Becoming and majority of us agreed that it should remain that way.  :)
