Title: Recent purchases
Post by: Markus on September 22, 2008, 06:53:24 pm
Hi folks,

this topic is to boast about fun stuff you bought that has nothing to do with music.

Let me start with two plants: Phyllostachus nigra (Black Bamboo) and Malus spp. "Pomfita", a red-fleshed apple. Both are going to grow on my roof-deck. :yeha:

I'm also gonna buy some Alraunen (mandragora, Madragora officinalis) soon. I'm already keeping two for a friend of mine, and they're so lovely and so poisonous that I can't give them away any more, so I'm buying her some new ones.

Cheers!

Ehm... The most recent thing I remember buying...
Lunch at school.
I could actually start whole a topic on inflation and economics if I begin talking about it... To make the long story short, the price has triplicated since I was in 7th grade (now I'm in 10th)

Off-topic:

I've just discovered that in "Tales of Ithiria" there's a very nice cover of "Hijo de la luna", from Mecano (Spanish old non-metal band). First I thought somebody had put the mp3 in that folder by error or as a joke... but not, Haggard covered that nice song

and Thomas De Quincey's - Confessions of an English Opium Eater

I've bought an on-line course about Editorial Correction. That means a lot of time in front of the pc, but few time for free-foruming, free-chatting, free-shouting or free-whatever  :ninja:

I had the need to study something... and that course seems really interesting to me. And it can help me in a future if I have to change my job

They were not that excited about it as I expected... they chewed it a bit, whirling around and rubbing themselves to the plant, and smelling it for long time. They were much more interested than in other plants, but not gnawing it to bald like Capra would. I also saw Valeriana in the fair but I didn't dare to buy it... I gave the Valeriana tea I had to my mom and asked her to keep it for me, long before the cats have arrived. :D

Oh yes she was! She was as a security guy somewhere, she also played a Klingon somewhere :D I did not notice too! :D She also doubled Dr. Crusher in one of the movies.

All stuff hidden in that preciousss :D When I am going to visit You and Carles in Barca I'll take the book with me =D

It was quite expensive (but when I see the size of the book - then not that much and part of the price went for charity which Pat Tallman supports).  Also all the problems with customs declaration (came from USA and price higher than 30 USD) were worth it. Hiiiii

Markus, sorry for such a late reply, I was a bit absent around here. Actually I wanted to find a dress that would look like 18th century for carnival this week - weekend :) After I saw I will not be able to get what I want, that the only things available were at least 150 e and far away from the look I wanted to create, I decided to go into another decade, from around 1920 - to 1940... Sometime like that. My bf also found clothes more easily, so we looked awesome last Saturday. But the dress is also very elegant so very suitable for going out for dinner, theatre, a drink.. It wasn't bought for just a one - time thing.

Nice, Lucy! You'll enjoy the tree for many years, and in the summer it can be outdoors, making forest honey. :wOOt:

And a truck on top of that! :wOOt: Umm... a truck? A truck as in "truck"?

Those are fantastic purchases!! And yes, I agree, a truk will be nice on it...

Why do you want a truck, if I can ask?  (surely you need it to keep secret NTSMS inside and travel around the world picking the conspirators up, right?) :nosweat:

I think I did not catch up on the latest conversation... can you please explain me all from the beginning?
Title: Re: Recent purchases
Post by: Lucy on December 22, 2012, 12:24:48 pm
Hihi Markus!

So, our latest purchase is a truck, as you can see the photo on the blog. It's needed for the garden works at the homestead, and it's going to carry the beehives. The honey-giving flowers open in different times, so in order to produce a lot of different kinds of honey, we will have to transfer the bees to other parts of Hungary. The very first one is colza, and there are no colza fields near, so the bees will be transported near a big colza field. Then they come home to catch the first line of acacia. We live in a Southern part of Hungary where acacia bloom earlier than in the Northern parts, so after producing the first acacia honey, we will take the bees towards North, to catch at least another acacia blossoming. Then they will all come home again because we have vast wild tobacco fields near (it's a Hungarian speciality, that plant grows wild everywhere here). After that it's going to be sunflower time! and they will travel near a huge sunflower field. Then, as last plant, they might catch Solidago flowers in late Summer to make the bees stronger, preparing for winter time. :wink2:
Title: Re: Recent purchases
Post by: Markus on December 22, 2012, 12:50:39 pm
These are quite concrete plans, Lucy!

Wild tobacco, really? I didn't know that. How did it get there? I mean, it's not native to Europe. Did it escape from tobacco farms? And you're going to make tobacco honey? Aren't your customers going to need more and more of it? Won't they be craving for their first honey bun in the morning? Won't they be foul-tempered if they don't get a bit of your honey every two or three hours?

Darn, what a business model! :evil2:

Cheers!

Markus

Title: Re: Recent purchases

You are very welcome! :wink2:

This is that plant: Asclepias syriaca (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asclepias_syriaca)
They wanted to use it for producing a replacement for silk, but it didn't work. It's a very frequent and tough weed, it conquers a lot of territory. Here in Hungary we can use it because it gives a very good quality honey, that is absolutely free of pollens so allergic people can eat this one and only kind of honey :)
Personally I don't like it... it really has a side taste like tobacco, it even reminds me of whisky so... ...bleeeee... But other people might get used to it, that would be great, so we will have a fixed customer base indeed.

New glasses :-/ and also MS Office 2010 for university students. Glasses should be done next week and Office installed by the end of this one.

By any accident, does anyone of you know where could I possibly get some nice pendant with goddess Kálí? :-)

Nice stuff, Kris! Nice and useful.

You're aware that we'll want to see pics of you with the new glasses? :ninja: :wOOt:

For Kali-stuff my first recommendation is always this place (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalkutta#Etymology). If you don't find anything there, you won't find anything at all.

And it might really become difficult... do you have Indian stores in Praha? I remember one store that had a Nataraja, but I think they shied away from the dark mother... You might try the internet or make one on your own.

Cheers!

Yes, I count on that. I would like to have a picture with the new glasses. They are going to be red.

Unfortunately Kolkata is bit to far :-/ Wish I knew someone to bring me one. But anyway, I am picky so I want to choose myself.

I am afraid no real Indian shops in Prague. But I will ask my teacher who teaches us about Hinduism and next semestre about Buddhism. She travels to India quite often...
I like Kali Ma a lot.... she's my favourite. :D

Yes, thank you, Markus. I really am. My hair was already horrible (I could not comb it after washing - the brush always got stuck, and it was very painful to try to get it out of the hair)... and the glasses in my opinion suit me well - most important is though, that they stay on my face and do not fall like the previous ones - that used to stress me a lot and I rather did not wear them. Of course, then I could not see properly on the PC or while studying.

How exactly does it work? :)
Title: Re: Recent purchases
Post by: Markus on April 21, 2013, 10:57:52 am
There's a rotor inside. By motions of your wrist you start turning it around, and the faster the rotor moves, the more resistance it puts up. So it gets harder to speed it up the faster it moves, and it gets harder to hold a firm grip on the thingy. I got myself one of the electronic powerballs - it flashes LEDs and measures the speed of the rotation.

As a beginner it's difficult to even start it. I had a lot of failed attempts first but now I can get it running quite easily. :)

Cheers!

I bought something too, yesterday. Not anything good for health but useful for sure. I had to buy some spring/early autumn shoes because I have only winter ones, then something like sandals (quite open shoes which means that if it is not warm you can get cold. And also sneakers but I cannot wear these with skirt and definitely not for official actions (exams etc). So I had to get some closed shoes and yet not warm.

I found some nice Mustangs for a reasonable price (on sale  ).

Title: Re: Recent purchases
Post by: Markus on May 18, 2013, 10:20:48 pm
Hey folks,

this week I bought some light summer pants that I can wear to the office. Light fabric, both in weight / density and colour, so I can wear (and bear) it on warm and sunny days. Also bought some Bermuda-shorts for more casual occasions or the hottest day. I had to try three sizes, each smaller than the previous. I'm sure the sizes were manipulated to flatter the customers, but whatever the number - I think they look good on me, and that's what counts.

My most recent purchase, though, was a new UMTS-stick. I managed to break my old one this afternoon. A few days without internet? No mails? No NTSMS? No way! So I marched to the nearest electronics store with the old, broken stick and my netbook and asked for a new one. (In case they had none, I was even willing to make an additional new contract if it's not too expensive, just to get back online quickly.) The guy at the show offered me to try the new stick right there, so I fetched the SIM-card from the old one, put it into the new and tried it - successfully. So I was online again immediately - disaster averted! :nosweat:

Cheers!

Title: Re: Recent purchases
Post by: Persephone on May 19, 2013, 09:34:48 am
Enjoy your new clothes! :-)

I tend to have "size" problem quite often too, especially with t-shirts. Every company makes different sizes and also as the clothes are often being made in China etc, not every piece is the same size... Also it differs according to the cut of the clothes.
Title: Re: Recent purchases
Post by: Markus on May 24, 2013, 11:06:34 pm
Right you are, Kris. At least some companies write the cut on the label (i.e. regular fit or slim fit). But I'm also convinced that they prefer to write down smaller sizes because that makes their customers happy.

Lucy, I'm sorry to contradict you. We're not addicted in the least - getting online, especially in order to visit this forum, is an objective necessity.

Cheers!

Markus
Title: Re: Recent purchases
Post by: Agnes on May 25, 2013, 08:16:05 am
I have the same problem but with shoes! In ECCO store my size is 37..
but when I want to buy a pair of shoes in other store, there is a problem.. 37 is to small, 38 is too big..

that's why I'm wearing my ballerines since high school (5-6 years?) :)

So recently I've bought 2 box DVDs of Smurfes (for my god-daughter), for me - some cosmetics (there is -40% discount in Rossmann drugstore, and ordered a make-up brush Hakuro H54 (free shipping) - Poly knows this brand. Btw, Poly, how is the H60 brush you've bought?

@Kris - it happens to me in H&M - one t-shirt in S size was good on me, the second one of the same size, not! ;)

Title: Re: Recent purchases
Post by: Luth on May 25, 2013, 09:13:02 am
Are you sure companies write a smaller size than the real one? My experience is the contrary: I usually have a 42 for pants... if the size is correct. But I've bought some that are 44, 46, even 48. Once, I bought a pair of jeans whose size was XXL / 50!!!! And I'm the same that always, and I'm still able to wear all my 42 jeans. I usually say "luckily I'm a grown up woman who knows the sizes are unreal; for a young teenager, worried about their weight, it must be very depressing to fit only in the "extra-size" clothes...  :med2:

Hey folks,

more clothing: I bought a red short-sleeved shirt. I'm attending a semi-formal event tonight and wanted to wear something beyond my usual office style. So I went to a store where I'd been served well before and left it with a nice new shirt. I'll iron it now, take a shower and leave.

Hey folks,

congrats, Jorge! Enjoy very much. When is the show? When do we get the review? Is your dad gonna join you?

Yeah, the evening was office-related: One of our communications trainers is retiring. So our big boss was there and many interesting people I didn't know yet. I'm so touched that she invited me, for she didn't invite many of my colleagues...

BTW: The event was in Leipzig, the next biggest city nearby. I was there early, strolled around - and stumbled across a "Fight Shop", a small store specialised in gear for fighting sports. So I could do some necessary shopping that saved me an errand tomorrow.

Anyway, buying the shirt was so enjoyable: I walked into the store, told the guy approximately what I wanted, and he fetched just the right shirt for me. He brought a "slim fit" - one that emphasises what I'm proud of and hides what I'm less proud of. :lol3: He tried to make me try an even smaller one, claiming that it would perhaps sit a little tight on my chest and shoulders (flatterer!) but I wasn't in the mood for experiments and happy enough with the first one.

Cheers!

Finally, I've found a pair of casuals that are almost perfect for me.

http://www.obuvkatalog.cz/baleriny-1100259/

Usually I have a problem that 37 size is too small, 38 is too big.
I wish this pair of shoes was more classic than sporty but I'm glad I finally found something for me.

My last pair of this kind I've got for a 100-days-before-secondary school certificate exam-party ;) (so it was 5 years ago!).

Bought in Deichmann for 79 PLN :)

Congrats, Agnes! Is that a good price?
Title: Re: Recent purchases
Post by: Agnes on June 17, 2013, 01:17:41 pm
anything below 100 PLN is a good price for me - I bet that some of you know ECCO brand. My Autumn/Spring shoes costed 450 PLN (but with goretex, they have 3 years now).

There was a pair of the same shoes buy in grey (and with price of 39 PLN) but I think that black ones are better, suit everything :)

Why I chose exactly this kind of shoes? I need a strap or something that will keep my foot in a shoe. My feet are narrow.. and the shoe without a strap fall off from the side of the heel.. I bet you know what I mean :)
Title: Re: Recent purchases

I buy shoes at Deichmann very often but only one season thing. They do not last long. Only one shoes from there (really wonderful design) lasted 1,5 year. I loved them.

These are nice :) I hope they will serve you well :D

ECCO has great shoes! But it is too expensive for me too.

Same here, Kris :) However, the pair of shoes I mentioned before (from 2008), is from Deichmann too ;)

I hope that someday I will have some extra money to buy another pair from ECCO (the one I have is the most comfortable pair of shoes I ever had) :)

Kris, I hope so :)

to all of your purchases. Especially to Agnes - have a safe trip and a memorable time in Madeira. Tell us something about it afterwards and share some pics, please. :)

My most recent purchase is an e-book for the new Kindle Paperwhite I received for my birthday.

Cheers!

Markus

Sure, I will take maaaany photos ;)
Thank you :) I can't wait! :D To be honest, the worst will be the flight - there and back - it will take 5-5,5 hours..
I've already prepared stuff to take - jeeeez - we decided to take 2 pillows! (cause the ones in hotels are too small for me) :)

Congratulations on your purchase, Markus!

On topic, I did another shopping yesterday. I've bought a snorkeling set - exactly this one: http://www.decathlon.co.uk/caraibes-100-ad-set-id_8174480.html  - costed 70 PLN

+ a small ball to the water (If not for now, it will be perfect for swimming with my sister :) )  http://www.decathlon.pl/media/818/8180693/big_800PX_mediacom_408029252.jpg   - perfect for kids, but since my hands are rather small, I decided to choose this one :) costed 10 PLN
+ frisbee! http://www.decathlon.co.uk/orange-d90-disc-id_8211386.html - costed 12 PLN

Agnes, enjoy your trip!! I'll wave you back, only tell me the right time to look up!  :lol3:

Markus: nice gift! I own a Kindle, a dirty-white one  :nana: But I like it a lot, and I use it even more. I will never ever abandon the real paper Bücher... I mean... books, and I'll always be a kind of a nostalgic here. But Kindle is practical, light, quite cheap and easy to bring with me in my long travels on train (or any travel). Enjoy dein Geschenk!!!

Ok, that's a good time for me. I'll be able to be in the outside looking for your plane. Look at the coast line, I'll be there (not Barcelona exactly, but a little at the North).  :ninja: :lol3:

Size 40?! :wOOt: Less than mine!

What colour is it?

Haha! I'm not sure the sizes are comparable... with shirts they go by the collar size, and mine is 40 cm. The rest is done by the choice of the fit. Besides that I believe that your clothes are somewhat different in style than mine. :lol3:

It's white with blue stripes. :)

I've been in the bookstore, and I've seen a book that caught my eye. I read the back cover, and decided I must read it. Not sure how such a subject can make a humor book, but I'll find soon.

In the back cover it says that the book has been sold a lot, and in Germany it is in all bookstores' shelves. Markus, have you heard of it? Have you seen it anywhere? The original title is Er ist wieder da (btw... I understand all the title with no help. I'm improving!  :ninja:)

Hey Luth,

it's amazing how little it takes to recognise that face, right?

It's true, this book is available in every German bookstore and it had some attention in the press. I didn't follow that, though, and I haven't read the book - so I can't tell you much about it.

Hitler and humour? Well, did you know that the Jewish author Ephraim Kishon wrote a book named "Mein Kamm" about the topic? (The title means "My Comb" but sounds very much like "Mein Kampf", i.e. "My Fight", a book by Hitler where he describes his ideology.) But there is a strange kind of humour in Germany where you just have to allude to Hitler and people start laughing. "Hahaha - Hitler! How funny!" I've never understood this kind of humour and that's why I had no closer interest in this book. I'm curious whether you find it worth reading!

Cheers!

Markus

I'll tell you as soon as I read it! In fact, I didn't intend to read this book right away, but I'll do, as I'm sooo curious about it! I've read a review (from a Catalan reader) and s/he liked it a lot: it seems that the reader, apart from laughing of the evident fun that can happen when you put a person (whoever he is) from 70 years ago to the nowadays world, he or she also can see some connections from this past and Europe today (and it's scary!). I think that, if the book is intelligently written, it can be really good. In fact, it's said that humor is the only real thing that makes humans different from all other animals... we must use it to laugh and to fight, too!

And yes, when I saw the picture of the cover (so plain and easy as it seems), I didn't need a second to recognize what did it mean...  :disgust:

Hey Luth,

... he or she also can see some connections from this past and Europe today (and it's scary!). I think that, if the book is intelligently written, it can be really good.

Now, that sounds like an aspect that would lead beyond the "Hahaha - Hitler!"-humour and that would make the book worth reading.

BTW, there is a Hitler-parody that I enjoy: NNN - Neueste Nationale Nachrichten (Latest National News) in a German satiric TV-show. That's made of Hitler-speeches with a new text. Hitler talks about the latest actions of his political grandchildren, the party NPD. He always gets very upset about their stupidity and clumsiness and starts insulting them heavily. Talking of that bunch of idiots - I'm very glad that they didn't play a role in yesterday's elections for the Bundestag, our national parliament. They came out at 1% and there was no other extreme right party, either. This is good news!

Cheers!

Markus

I thought about talking about the elections in this topic, but as it's "Recent purchases" and not "National (or international) news", I thought not. But your fault! You started!!

I think there has never been so much interest here in any foreigh country elections (apart from United States, of course...) than now in German elections. What do you think on Merkel's victory? Of course, talk only if you feel like to.  :wink2:

Dear Luth,

I wasn't aware that the elections received so much interest in Europe. Well, I will post a bit about it in the appropriate topic, but not right now - it's a lovely starry autumn night and I'll soon be going for another walk.

Cheers!

Transparent black. Sounds amazing, even when played through bass effect pedals. And man, so comfy.
One of the best purchases I've made in my life? You bet.
