You Don't Mess with the Zohan
score: 2.5/10
Bad humor, bad acting, bad, bad, bad...

Wall·e
score: 7/10
funny, sweet, simple...

Kung Fu Panda
score: 9/10
funny as hell, pragmatic (i used dictionary for that word), just love it

Hancock
score: 6.5/10
bad story, god effects and action

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
score: 4/10
Terrible story, too fast happenings, only good side is few jokes from Brendan Fraser and some of the action that is mostly 100% exaggerated and unnecessary, it even gets boring at some points.

The Dark Knight
score: 9.5/10
Excellent acting. Lots of bombardment with trailers. lots of stuff happen, no boring parts, good action...

The X-Files: I Want to Believe
score: 5/10
This is no X-file's move nor horror movie... this is some usual thriller. totally average

Sex and the City
score: 7/10
Cool movie. It's interesting... maybe not met for a guy but I enjoyed it

Wanted
score: 7/10
Too exaggerated action for my taste, but that's it. Nice action and effects, good idea...

The Incredible Hulk
score: 8/10
Very good effects. Much, much better than Hulk 1. I liked it.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
score: 9/10
Very good movie. Good humor. Sometimes even too much from needed and too close to comedy. I didn't like the end and aliens in the story, but that's the story... Loved everything else... not boring even for a second.

I'm very strict at scores

1/10 - could not stand to watched it how terrible it was (there were few)
2-4/10 - below average movie
5/10 - totally average movie, nothing special, nothing bad.
6-8/10 - good movies, fun to watch
9/10 - excellent movie, MUST WATCH
10/10 - "better than sex" (it's from www.spill.com highest grade) SUPERB!!! You speechlessly sit in your seat at theater for hours after movie is over. You stay "WAW!!!" for days after watching it.  :lol3:
(The only movie I remember I would give grade 10/10 to is "V for Vendetta"

Within the last few weeks:

Wall-E
8/10 - Nice movie, we were watching it mainly because of my younger sis. Still, pretty good. Made me discover I am a man with quite a futuristic sight of the World.
Kung Fu Panda
8/10 - Laughed a lot when watching it. Watched it for the same reason as above.
The Matrix Revolutions
7.5/10 - This was in fact the first time I watched this episode in the Matrix trilogy, and I must say it's pretty good compared to the second one. Doesn't beat the original though.
The Matrix Reloaded
5.5/10 - Average, but not comparable to the original. Watched it again for the mere sake of watching the full Matrix trilogy.
The Matrix
9.5/10 - Probably one of the most mind blowing movies I've seen in my life. It's been the 19787098th time I watched it, and I still love it.
Batman: The Dark Knight
9.5/10 - I watched it Imax. No more words needed... Well, except, "why so serious?"

Thanks for the rating system Deathy.

I just watched a movie called What Dreams May Come (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120889/). It's a quite old movie (starring Robin Williams, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Annabella Sciorra), so I suppose that many of you have already seen this movie.

IMO, it's a quite decent movie. It's a love story actually about two people whose love doesn't die even when they both are dead.
Now I know, it might sound cheesy, but the whole concept is actually pretty interesting...

my personal rating for the movie is 7/10

Wanted
5.3/10
Pros: Good special effects, Angelina Jolie, Morgan Freeman, decent soundtrack.
Cons: Too much blood, too much obscene language, half decent storyline (almost like they made Assassin's Creed into a modern-setting movie, but AC was at least cool and a good game!)
Overall, not recommended unless you love blood, loads of bullets flying in impossible directions, and don't mind loads of obscene language.

The Argentine ... yep, the film about Che Guevara.
A quiet good film with a very strong historical and philosophical approach. It does n't judge him, it does n't idolize him. It shows him and an the Cuban revolution.
Benicio del Toro is simply brilliant... however the film itself has some slooooow parts, which might have been avoided.
Recomended for those who like to see documentaries or historical movies.

Saw Wanted over the weeked. I dunno, I lost interest in some parts of the movie. The story is nice, but like I sad, some scenes just made me loose interest.

I also saw, Ladron Roba Ladron (Thief steals from Thief?), it's a mexican movie, sort of like the Mexican Ocean's 11 hehe. It was very entertaining! clever thieves

Made of Honor - North Americans should really stop doing this type of romantic comedies. This story about your best friend getting married, or everyone getting married except the protagonist is wornout. Really sucked :-/

Prom Night - Sort of like a I Know What You Did Last SUmmer - Also worn out

The Mist - This one is good. Although the ending was not like I expect it to be it kept me like this O_O staring at TV.

I saw an interesting movie yesterday, called Good Bye, Lenin! (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0301357/). It's about a German family and their life after fall of DDR. In the middle of everything there is a woman who wakes up after 8 months being in a coma, and her son, who tries to protect her fragile health by trying to prevent her from knowing about the faith of her beloved nation of East Germany.

oh and by the way
I find Alex (the main character) pretty cute

Well, Luth this only applies to kid's movies or movies that are planned to be a total commercial hit. And even in that case, you can probably find a subtitled version playing in the cinema at the same time. Otherwise, we're all limited to subtitles only.
Well, that's at least how it works in Latin America.

Hi One,

if you use eMule or Lphant or any other P2P software to get the movie, you can have that movie dubbed in Spain very easily  :insane:
Title: Re: Recent Movies seen! :alien:

Well TheOne, unfortunately that's not the way it works in this side of pond. Most (all?) movies are doubled... even those for adults. It's a real challenge to find a movie in it's original version with subtitles. So, you better look for a Latin American version.
Oh!.... and when I say doubled movies, I say doubled in Spanish from Spain (with the vosotros and the z's and everything!)... try to imagine Darth Vader or the last Joker speaking like that  .

Well than I'm lucky coz I never watch movies that are not in english and have no subtitles in english.. usually I watch only movies in english with no subtitles.. or like I was watching movie 300 (speaking english, subtitles  in french..haha..  and I understoos it both :P )

@Misti: Good Bye, Lenin! Is a great movie. I've watched it at least 4 times on national tv (with slovenian subtitles) and I could watch it over and over again.

There's also another movie I find interesting. it's in french..and in german.. talks about how two armies - german and french spend their Christmas together..like there was no war going on.. it really moved me.  I think it's called Joeux Noël ( Marry Christmas).

Yesterday evening I went to the cinema to watch ”Reprise (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0827517/)”, a Norwegian movie. The cinema itself was that old fashioned one with small rooms and the soft continuous sound of the projecting machine in the background... I enjoyed that a lot. :)

It’s hard to say anything about it... One of the obvious things is that I liked the sound of the language a lot. (It was in original language, with Hungarian subtitles.) They even say in the movie, when they are in Paris, that Norwegian must sound like some hissing incomprehensible language to the foreigners. Well, this is only partly true for me, You know that I’m very much into languages, so I’ve been listening to the ”hissing” more than interested. :)

The story seems to be very simple. Two great friends, with ambitions to become great writers. It would be funny to have a linear story-telling, from the beginning to the end, like ”this and this and that happened and they lived happily ever after.” Life isn’t like this – so the film, as if it was the parody of the very same film itself, showed some variations to the same story, and sometimes didn’t even told us which one is real. (How strange, I’m reading a similar book right now.)

I liked the fact that the film was so real (in one sense). All this could have happened to me as well, and I felt like this mostly because I too wanted to write. But in the same time, I liked that the film was full of events that we are used to call ”miracles”, some everyday inexplicable mysteries. (For example the two guys like a lot a Norwegian writer, who is living alone, and never talks to anyone. They know that every attempt to get close to him is in vain, and they even fail during the one and only possibility to talk to him. And then, after a series of coincidences, one of the men suddenly finds himself in his very home, and they begin to talk.)

I do believe that this is how life is in real indeed. :)

I was a bit afraid to go to see the film, because I read that it’s a drama, and I didn’t want to feel down. As usual, my curiosity was stronger. Strangely the movie helped my slightly depressed mood of nowadays, when I was walking home in the rain, I clearly felt some kind of relief.

Oh!.... and when I say doubled movies, I say doubled in Spanish from Spain (with the vosotros and the z's and everything!)... try to imagine Darth Vader or the last Joker speaking like that  .
Well, I've heard both characters dubbed to (our very own and Latin) Spanish and with their original speech in their original language. So, those aren't hard to imagine... But I know what you mean. I see it in every video game that is translated to Spanish. That's why I always set the language in them to be in English.
Title: Re: Recent Movies seen! :alien:

Most (all?) movies are doubled... even those for adults. It's a real challenge to find a movie in it's original version with subtitles.
... and three days later Madrid proved me wrong  . Yesterday, I went to see the last Woody Allen's movie: Vicky, Cristina, Barcelona. It turned out to be the original version with Spanish subtitles for the English parts (i.e. 80% of the movie) and... to my big surprise the cinema was crowed as hell, and there were no complains about subtitles or anything. Things seem to be changing and that's good  .

Anyway, on topic: the film is very, very good. It's not the "typical" Woody Allen movie with lots of ridiculous situations taken to the extreme. It is far more subtle... it shows a couple of opposite stereotypes at the beginnig, shakes them up in a quiet torrid way and then makes fun of them for the rest of the film. It's so good, that I'll have to see it again to gather more details about the characters, the way art is shown and of course ... the city. Barcelona is almost everywhere in the film (it's a character of the film!). Highly recomended

Eya Alu!

I saw that movie on Saturday...as it could not be another way living where I live  :ninja:

I have to explain that this is not the normal thing, having more original versions than dubbed ones... in fact, I can't remember any other movie in which that fact happened  -_-   The version I saw was the only one I had in my own city (small city... remember...): dubbed to Catalan. Well, being dubbed to Catalan instead of Spanish is already a strange fact, I may say :insane:  Of course it's not the good option, but better than having it dubbed to Spanish: how the hell can you know where are the characters speaking in Spanish and when in English if all the movie is spoken in Spanish? At least I could knew that Catalan=English and Spanish=Spanish  :nana:

I can't fully agree with Al about the goodness of the movie: I liked it a lot, really, and I enjoyed the viewing... but I don't think it's an art work as so many people says... I'm sure that there are a lot of Woody Allen movies better than that. Despite that I really like the movie, the dialogs and the characters (and the place where all they happen, of course  :ninja: ). I don't like too much Penélope Cruz as an actress, but I think that her work is perfect: in fact, I'm sure that the character has been written according to the actress  Simply brilliant.

About Barcelona... yes, it's another character of the movie, and an important one, I have to say. The first half hour is a touristic guide of the city; but it could have been Paris, NY or Hong Kong, if Woody Allen has decided that. Of course, having "my" city in such important movie, made by such a genius (the director), is a proud motive....  :evil2:

Summarizing: a very good movie, more important to us because of the city, but not the best one of the director.

A movie to enjoy

I've just seen "Hair"... has anyone seen it?

It's a musical from 1979 (very late for the subject): it's about hippies and war (Vietnam), drugs, sex and friendship. Do you know the song "Let's the sun shine"? Well, the song belongs to the movie. I will explain nothing, for those who want to see it, but I have to say that it has surprised me... a lot. Specially the end...

OK, Luth, "Hair" gets onto my list. I happen to know that the world premiere of the musical was exactly 41 years ago.

Last good movie I watched was a German one named "Einer bleibt sitzen" ("One remains seated"). It's about a young man who suffers from paraplegia after a road accident which he doesn't remember. He had that accident because he found out that his girlfriend left him for his best friend, but due to his amnesia he forgot that. Still he's about to give himself up completely. His best friend, feeling guilty, moves him to participate in a rehabilitation camp - but to do so this friend promised to join the camp incognito and to spend that time in the wheelchair himself. It's a very emotional and touching movie about hope, friendship, guilt, despair, and it's very well done, seeming very authentic. A big recommendation!

Cheers!

Markus

Tropic Thunder (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0942385/)
5/10 - Watchable. It's a movie about a crew of actors who are filming a movie based on a memoir of the Vietnam war. As the movie is about to get canceled, they decide to send the crew onto some more realistic "survival in the jungle" action, and they end up fighting the real Southeast Asian guerrilla...
Pros: It's got a funny text intro, some cool action, one very memorable dialogue line ("I'm the dude playing a dude disguised as another dude") and a few other funny moments.
Cons: Some jokes are retarded, I'd expect more from Jack Black! Language isn't suitable for all family (not a big deal for me though )... And there must have been something wrong with the tape at the movie theater, the movie looked way too dark!

Watched "Krabat" tonight. I wrote about the book in another thread, and now I watched the movie.

Nicely done, visually nice. Shouldn't have read the book first, because I missed some scenes from the book. But then again I wouldn't have understood every detail without knowing the book. Worth watching in any case. :)

I just watched Vicky Cristina Barcelona (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0497465/) - it was fantastic, I liked it a lot!

I read some critics... they said that the movie doesn't give any advice and it can make someone feel helpless... well You know... it helped me a lot and I feel a lot better now. It's a movie I can hang or cling on right now...

I could identify myself perfectly with all three (very different from each other) female protagonists in the same time.

I liked the way they were talking: always clearly speaking out their very thoughts honestly!

And yes, I had to think about Luthy all the time - Barcelona must be marvelous! :wOOt:

Superbad
7.5/10
I enjoyed a lot of it, pretty funny. Very obscene and definitely not a movie made for children. I felt strongly identified with the two protagonists, I mean they remind me of the great friendship I've got with a pal who I technically see in all of my classes. I gave it a rather low rating though in consideration of all the sexual, drug and alcohol references. It gives a positive message through a negative, yet, hilarious way.
Pros: Loads of jokes that made me laugh.
Cons: It's obscene, not suitable for all your family... Definitely not a movie to watch with grandma! :lol3:

He, he... I saw it too... I must to!  :ninja:

Well, I think that the movie shows a lot of the city... although only a part of it (the beatiful part, to say something). Of course, that's a nice thing for people living in or near Barcelona. To know better the city, the only way is to make a little trip here

Right now I can't remember if I already posted my feelings about the movie, and I'm very lazy, so I'll post it again (if I didn't previously): I liked it a lot, although I don't think it's the best or one of the better ones of Woody Allen. It's simply a very good one, with a good work of the actors and actresses. A strange thing is that the character I liked is most is the one of Penélope Cruz... an actress I can't stand with  :fish: I think that the character was written thinking in her  :innocent:

If you happen to decide to see the city by yourself, you already know who to call to, don't you?  :wink2:

There was this film festival in Ljubljana called LIFFE.. there I went and watched a movie ..swedish.. in english the adress would be Let the right one in..
it talkes about a young boy named Oskar.... he was bulleid by his classmates and never had much friends.. than one day a girl his age (around 12) moves in the same house he lives in..and on that day strange stuff are happening.. her father.. or smth like that is killing people to provide her enough blood to survive.. if I understood correctly she's been bitten and turned into vampire at the age of 12.. and she's been one for many years before she met Oskar...
They like each other, become friends, become in love...it's a story full of different aspects over life.. it's a very good film in all ways - from actors to story, quality of the movie .. I loved it.. :) recommend it to all who don't look away from some blood..(there's a lot of such sceenes in it.. :) )
here's a link to movie description etc: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1139797/

Just saw "Mongol", a movie about Genghis Khan. Good stuff for those who like epic movies  :wicking: . Yep, those Russians can do good movies when they want to (well, with the help of the Germans and the Chinese, but what the heck).

I also want to check out "Mongol", it sounds like a pretty nice movie.
I recently watched:
Madagascar II(9.5/10)- Couldn't stop laughing. It can be a movie aimed for kids but it will crack you up no matter how old you are. Well made CGI, it's a good movie to go see with your little siblings. -_-

Awake (7.5/10)- Finally a movie where Hayden Christensen is not some kid with anger management problems. (Ok, let's admit it, the Star Wars saga rocks, but Hayden could've done a better job) Actually it's pretty cool because he is millionaire that is to have a heart transplant... However, when the anesthesia kicks in, he remains conscious and can feel everything, however, he can't open his eyes or move... And finds out some quite surprising stuff while he is lying on the operation table. The story isn't anything surprising, but it isn't terrible either. It's a nice drama film for an evening with friends.

Stardust, The Duchess, Young People F***...

Stardust.. nice fantasy story... pretty solid made movie.. a couple of obvous mstakes but not releant for the stoy..  all in all enjoyable movie  :)

The Duchess.. a bunch of nice dresses and jewerly.. probably this movie had a huge budget.. but it's rather dissapointing..the plot is not so interesting .. or I just wasted time on too many movies with shallow story ..

Young People F***- a great movie.. made me laugh  :) it actually tells the turth about what problems people can have in bed.. either with partners or exes, friends.. strangers.. roomates..

sheesh...I've seen soo many movies in the last couple of days...here are some of them

The Nightmare Before Christmas (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107688/)
-> I've already seen this movie (cartoon that is) quite a while ago, but I felt like watching it again, so I've taken a look at it today, for old times' sake  ah, you just can't not like it! everything's great about it: the way characters are made, the atmosphere, the message...everything!

Sleepy Hollow (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0162661/)
-> this movie I've always wanted to see, but haven't up until now; and now I've finally seen it. What to say about it? I loved it! The atmosphere (oh I'm so obsessed with this kind of atmospheres in movies) was just fabulous. So burton-ish. Not to mention Johnny Depp, who was brilliant as always (   ). I thought the story was pretty cool too, even though many people would disagree with me on this. But oh well :D

Edward Scissorhands (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099487/)
-> another movie that I've already seen, but as a kid. I kinda felt like watching it again, so I gave it another shot. Once again, that movie didn't disappoint me. (I just love Burton) Edward's character is soo good made that you just can't help liking it, as well as sympathizing with him. (Another plus is that *cough Johnny Depp's the main actor *cough)

tell me about it. I love Johnny Depp, as well as Tim Burton. They two are like the best combination in a movie. Ever ;D

speaking of Johnny Depp and Tim Burton...
I watched the movie called Ed Wood (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109707/).

It's a story of the worst movie director of all times (or so he was proclaimed). I liked the movie so much; it left such a big impression on me. Ed Wood seems to have been a great person, he had such a great passion... but he reminded me of what Oscar Wilde said about true poets. He said that true poets were bad artists, because they lived the poetry which they didn't know how to write down, while good artists were bad poets, because they wrote poetry which they didn't know to live.
I think he was one of those. Good poet, so to say.
I must say that this is one of the better movies I've seen. Might as well be my favourite.
I'd recommend this movie to all of you who still haven't seen it (just for the record, the movie is black and white...which kind of contributes to the atmosphere...makes it better)...
Ah, what an inspiring movie.
Also, it made me want to watch Ed's movies now...I'm probably gonna download some and take a look at them...
I know they are said to be awful, but knowing the story behind them...I don't even doubt I'll enjoy them. This guy is so worth of admiration...

Hmm, thanks to Eresh I found again this topic! Almost forgot that it does exist. : )

2 days ago I saw a movie directed by Sofia Coppola called "The Virgin Suicides". One of the main actresses there is young Kirsten Dunst. It is weird movie. But nice, bit shocking ending. Not in sense that it suprises... but if one thinks about it, it's kinda shocking. Weird movie, indeed. Nice camera work.

I got Ironman on the plane lastnight. It's an OK action movie. It won't change your life, but it made the flight shorter.

Oh! and I also got the chance to see The Other Boleyn Girl while in holidays. It's not a great a movie but it's good chance to see two hot girls trying to play historic characters. There was a tv series during the 90's that was way better and historical accurate.

Vals im Bashir. It's some kind of animated documentary/drama movie about one of the darkest points in the history of Israel. The animation is not made on pc... and the story is strong somehow. I liked it a lot. It's a real story of the director and his "friends". Tells about massacre in Sabra and Shatila.

As for me:
Pararise Now (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0445620/) (7.9/10) Not a bad movie at all. If you're interested in what's going on down between Palestine and Israel, and want to see a perspective other than that from the news, check this movie out.

Underworld - Rise of The Lycans
Cool movie, anyone liking prequels will like this one as well
8/10

Slumdog Millionaire
Good movie, very deep and good shower of pain and lifestyle of some countries, you just fall for something in that movie.
9/10

Valkyrie
Hating Tom Cruise lately, but putting that on the side, movie is good.
8/10

My Bloody Valentine 3-D
If the film wasn't 3D it would be totally average movie I wouldn't watch in cinema.
6/10

Confessions of a Shopaholic
Standard comedy for girls.
6/10

Bolt
Hilarious as most animated movies
8/10

The Pink Panther 2
Horrible, horrible... much worse than prequel, nothing can touch even close to original movies. I laughed a few times during movie from surprise how stupid can it be and how low they can get.
3/10

These last days I got the chance to see these movies:
Rightgeous Kill with Robert De Niro and Al Pacino --- Waste of time and money. Why do I have the impression that Pacino has been playing the same character for years now?

12:08 east of Bucharest. The Palme d'or winner in 200....7? . I usually don't like films that win something at Cannes film festival, but this one is a big exception. Great stuff, very funny and a camera man that plays a hiden character and drives you completely crazy  . Very, very good film.

Slumdog millionaire. Everything has already been said about this film. So, i will only add this:

I watched True Blood season 1.. 12 parts.. have to say it's good.. funny.. lots of sex and blood   :P Again some vampire stuff so if you're not interested in them it's not worth watching..  I liked the whole thing just at the end they could make a more spectacular ending.. I feel like smth is missing in the final part.. and they put too much info in last part so you don't even get a feeling of some sort of compact story.. but anway.. can't wait for the new season to come out.. and also the third season of THE TUDORS!

The Machinist (with Christian Bale)... psychological, scary, distressing... a kind of mixture between American Psycho and Spider.
Good stuff

I watched this weekend.. Blow (with  J. Deep), very good movie!

Than White Oleander.. hmm.. a bit depressing.. at least for me.. some bad family relationships and such.. it's not bad but I've seen better movies with such theme..

Than The Clockwork Orange.. it's really fascinating! The beginning is so like.. WTF??(murder, rape, beating drunk old men...)  But all in all it's such a great movie!
But.. what's with British men and sex?

Than I watched The Ring Of The Nibelungs.. again..  just love it soo much!

And also.. after Alu's posted it.. I dl The Machinist! Really great stuff! And Christian is so skinny.. he really looks like he would be half dead!  :afaid:

Yesterday night I watched (again) "Amélie"... a fantastic French movie that shows how American movies can be beaten with imagination. I love this one.

And today: " Manhattan Murder Mystery" (Woody Allen). It's second time I watch it. One of the best ones from Woody Allen: I love the little replicas from Allen!!! They're so fast (as if it was normal to say that) and hilarious!  :lol3:

Knocked Up (7/10)- Ok, not precisely great for a family to watch, nor a groundbreaking movie in general. But it was nice to watch, I laughed at some points.
Everything is Illuminated(9/10)- Amazing movie, among the best I've seen in a while. It nearly made me cry at a very emotional point, and made me laugh a pair of times too. I highly recommend it. ^_^ "Everything is Illuminated, in the Light of the Past"

A long weekened ... a few more movies to my "done" list:
Australia: Too long, too predictable, too many clichés, too overwhelming music, too boring... too much!

Sleuth: A remake of a movie from the 70's. A millionaire and a young actor are face to face to settle things down. The millionaire is married to a woman he doesn't love anymore and the young one is the lover of that woman. A "theatre-like" kind of movie. The good thing is that Michael Caine played the young man in the original movie and the millionaire in the remake. It was nice to them back to back. Both of them are very good by the way.

Transsiberian: A drug-dealing thriller about two very different couples that take the Transsiberian train while looking for some "adventures". An OK movie, but at some places it sounds like deja-vu. The good point is that it doesn't fall into the classic American clichés for this king of movies (i.e. when a guy is dead, he is dead, he doesn't come back to die again in the last minute).

The Secret Life Of Bees - nice movie :) About a girl who accidently killed her mum at age of 4.. and than how she came to deal with her past.

Mirrors - Fantastic movie! Smth like horror, a bit supernatural but all in all great!

Last Sunday I saw the new Star Trek movie and well.... it has all the pros and the cons of any prequel movie. It gives some clues, it answers some questions BUT, you cannot avoid thinking how lame are the new actors playing Mr. Spock or Captain Kirk compared to the originals, and how awesome are the new visual effects (which is a pity given that the movie happens before the original ones). So well, it should be great fun for every good fan of Star Trek, especially for those who think that Mr. Spock deserves a better treatment than the one Kirk got in one of the "New Generation" movies (the guy actually died!).

I saw the same move, almost the same day (Saturday night, just when Real Madrid was loosing its match and giving to Barça the League  :insane: ). And I consider myself a Star Trek fan... I liked the movie a lot, although Spock is Leonard Nimoy and will ever be  :ninja:

Siriusly, I think the movie is good for both trekkies and no trekkies. The new actors  did pretty well... even when I see Sylar as Spock  , and the plot is good enough (not the best plot of the history, but well...). And yes, the visual effects are absolutely different from the original series. Perhaps they even changed too much the Enterprise bridge.

Bah, I liked it, and I still think Spock (specially the more grown Spock) is the best character ever  :fish:

@saph: I watched Aeon Flux a while ago and I didn't like it that much...I dunno, I like to watch films of that kind from time to time, but I found that one pretty boring. I dunno.

And concerning the new Star Trek  :lol3: .. everyone's been talking to me about how great that movie is, but I still haven't taken time to watch it. I guess that I'll just have to...  :spock:

oh by the way
the last film I watched was ''Un chien andalou'' or in English ''An Andalusian Dog'' written by Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí. So you can tell by the name of the authors that it was a surreal movie. It's the most confusing movie I've ever seen (even though it's only 16 minutes long, it's a silent movie, from the year 1929). It's full of absurd scenes, but then again, that's what surrealism is all about, that's why I like it :) and I think Dalí is an awesome artist :)) one of my all-time favourites :D

Two more movies watched this weekend:
1. Die Welle (the wave in english?). A very good movie about the "joys" of autocracy. It's in the same vein than Das Experiment, but far more credible (the actors do a great job). Man! what is going on in Germany? ... those guys are doing really good films lately.  :wOOt:

2. Waltz with Bashir. This thing is so well made that you only remember that you are watching a cartoon in the very last scene of the film, and it is there that you get hit in the face
... really hard!  :computer:
A must watching stuff.

I've "La Ola" ("Die Welle" translated into Spanish), but I have not seen yet... I want to as soon as possible! I'll told my opinion when I've seen it. And I've "Waltz with Bashir" too... and I also have to see it yet!!! (lack of time?  )

Saturday I saw "Millenium I: Men who didn't love women" (perhaps in English is translated as the book, "The woman with a Dragon Tattoo"?), the movie based on the best-seller book from Sweddish Stieg Larsson. Although I'm not too fond to best-sellers and its movies, I really enjoyed both, the book and the movie, in that case. Curiously, the movie started being recorded when the book was still not a best-seller, so the money invested in it is not as big as it could be, and I think it's good. The movie is almost the same than the novel, with some cut here and there and very few changes. I recommend both, book and movie (about the second and third part of the book, I have not read any of them yet, but I want to).

The Hangover

Four guys go to Las Vegas to celebrate the stag night of one of them. They hire an expensive suite and then furtively climb on top of the roof to drink "to a night they will never forget". Next thing you see is how they wake up in their devastated suite. One of the armchairs is still smoking. There is a chicken around, a genuine feathered one. There's a baby in the closet, but they can't find the groom anywhere. Oh and there's a tiger in the bathrom. -_- And that's only the beginning.

I score this one 8.5 - almost a must-see. The humour is not all too gentle, but it's dead funny. We were laughing tears, guys and a lady alike. Also the movie has quite a warm-hearted message. Really worth seeing!

Before leaving Spain I got the chance to see Tarantino' Inglorious Basterds and Amenamar's Agora.
The first one, I like (a lot) until that scene in the cinema, which almost blasted the whole movie. Fortunately, the very last scene is good enough to make you recover that smile.
The second one is alright. It's not the best movie in the world, but it's still very entertaining. It leaves you with some very important questions regarding religious beliefs (as if we need some more!). What I really like in this film is the aerial and spatial looks in some key moments ... that's what make this particular film different and worth watching!

Well, I just finished watching a really interesting work of art the other day.
Metropolis: A mute film from 1927 made in Germany. A masterpiece of avantgarde films according to my Theory of Knowledge teacher, a Christian criticism of Karl Marx's Communist Manifesto entwined with the Book of Revelations according to me. :lol3: It's pretty good, and the special effects are mind-blowing for its time.

I've seen this movie in "underground" cinema Aero in here - it was great  experience for me too! You know, sometimes things all round me use to happen and it puts the movie back on my mind. I cannot help myself - in many ways it is still up to date!

Yesterday I saw on the box called Nightfall (Tasogare Seibei) by Jódži Jamada. It's from 2002 and actually when I was searching for some things I even found it was nominated for Oscar's.

It's about samurai Seibei - his wife just died for tuberculosis, he has 2 daughters and one senile mother in care (I think she has Alzheimer)... he ows money anywhere he turns.
You know, I hate samurai movies - but this was fantastic. It gives a very realistic point of You of the feudal society back in 19th century in Japan - when the feudal system is just about to end...
and it's an adaptation of novel by Shuhei Fudjisawa.

It was very deep movie and so peacefull. I miss these movies which You really have to think about... now all movies are almost all so dull.

2012

I watched it last night and wasn't aware that it's so long - the cinema even made a break in the middle of the film.

The story is quickly told: The world as we know it is about to end due to cosmic influences, and the brave heroes and responsible governments are trying to ensure the survival of mankind by ensuring the survival of a few hundred thousand people, a selection of animals and works of art and science.

I will not even talk about scientific correctness. This would be unfair with such a movie and would be much like talking about the sound of a painting. :lol3:

Yes, the pictures are impressive, especially in the first part where whole cities are destroyed. Emmerich demolishes cities in ways you've never seen before in a movie. You see sky-scrapers crumbling into opening chasms or the caldera of Yellowstone exploding like a nuclear bomb. Yet somehow this all left me strangely cold - the most touching scene to me was the phone-call of an old man who hasn't talked to his son for years, who wasn't even known to his granddaughter but who calls now now before it's too late. Before he can exchange a word with his son the apartment starts shake violently and the phone-connection breaks down.

Later Emmerich focuses more on a few individuals struggling for their survival near and in the arks that have been built. Here the movie becomes much "smaller", Emmerich even uses a chep-camera-style in order to produce a more authentic, documentary feeling. But he also gives an overdose of US-patriotism here. There is a scene when the big bad flood-wave is about to hit in 15 minutes, much sooner than expected, and an important decision has to be made and implemented. But instead of acting they lecture on humanity and civilisation.

The movie ends much like "The Day After", zooming out from a changed planet where a former source of economical refugees now becomes the goal of survivors.

All in all I give it 6/10 - no interesting story, no challenging statement, but worth seeing for the special effects of the first part.

Cheers!

Markus

Oh, is there an old movie and a book? I didn't know about it!

As far as I know (and as fas as I've read), the plot is based in a real story happened in 1967, California. The movie I've seen is from 2008, so very recent one.

(Arg! I wanted to copy-paste what "FilmAffinity" explains, but I see that the Spanish version of the site has more info about that movie than the English one. I'll have to summarize it by myself  :ninja: )

Well, the movie explains how a teacher establishes a new régime based upon the unity of the group, the hostility against the anarchists, the authority... In only five days, the group, named "The Wave", becomes so extreme and dangerous that the teacher must do something to stop it (I won't explain more). Part fiction as it is (although based upon real facts), it shows a lot about human nature...

I saw that movie something like six months ago. I don't know if I posted it here, but it is indeed a nice and disturbing film. I knew about the book (they mention it on the extras of the dvd), but I didn't know about the older film. I'll try to find it.
My favourite scene is at the beginning, when the teacher drives his old car to the school while listening some punk :music: . It's quiet drastic when remember that scene towards the middle of the film.

I've just come back from watching "Avatar", and I have to say I've enjoyed it soooo much!!!  :yeha:

The plot is very predictable (at least, I already knew how all was going to happen after 20 minutes of the movie... and it's an almost-3h-movie). But it absolutely didn't mattered to me. The visual effects are fantastic, specially if you see them in 3-D  The message is also clear, and I like it so much (you know, how humans tend to destroy Nature and how Nature must be preserved). I really been moved by the characters, and I think it's a very good thing.

Summing up: WATCH IT!!!! (in 3D if possible!!!).

The Great Dictator - 9/10.

It was just showed on arte TV in black-and-white HD. It would be hilariously funny if it wasn't so bitterly serious at the same time, and the final speech of the Barber mistaken for Hynkel is very touching. This one deserves being called a classic!

I saw "The Great Dictator" in a cinema, several years ago, in a special show. Indeed, it's a great movie, a real classic... And you have to think that, in the moment of the making of the movie, it as known not as much information as now is; so, the merit is even greter! :ninja:
Title: Re: Recent Movies seen! :alien:
Post by: Markus on December 21, 2009, 10:55:52 am
Yes indeed, Luth,

you really have to consider that this movie was published in 1940, long before the full amount of Nazi-German cruelties was known to the world. It was far worse than Chaplin knew and could show at the time - and yet his movie is both unmasking and arousing.

A technical thing that really makes me wonder is how they turned this old movie into HD. Seems the original tapes must have been very fine-grained and they sent them through a high-resolution scanner. Now that I think of it this should be easier to do with black-and-white-movies than with coloured ones.

Cheers!

Yeah, I finally watched it.
Sucks in terms of historical content. Pretty good as a highly romanticized (and violent) version of the tale of William Wallace. Worth watching.

Just saw The Wolfman this last weekend: Highly predictable, filled with undeveloped characters, and mediocre acting. Watch it only if you have a few bucks to spare and nothing else to do.
It is amazing to see how Anthony Hopkins has been playing the very same type of character again, again, and again during the last few years.

Oh I understand that... now, we watched a movie which he bought - El Orfanato written by Guillermo del Toro. It's nice, the same way like Pan's Labyrinth but the same sad and crazy. The plot is very similar in something to Silent Hill. I knew that someone will have to die right in the beginning of the movie - yes, it was son and his mother... Oh dear Notessomes, in the end I was crying like a turtle. But I didn't want him to see my tears, I always feel so stupid when the feeling from the movie makes me cry.
I always cry with these "Hispanic" movies like 21 Gramms, Amores Perros and Pan's Labyrinth... they are so uneasy for the human mind and psychics. Very exhausting.

But I liked it a lot. :)

Indeed. When I was in Spain I was surprised by the image that the Spaniards have of their own films (it soooo bad!), while in other parts of the world Spanish films are highly appreciated. Although, well... most of the Spanish films that make it outside of its country are simply the best, and most of the crap remains indoors. Man, how would I wish that it was the same for the American films :bann:

Hey Mirjam!
I'm an adoptive Canadian. I was born in Colombia, and still feel quiet Colombian. However, after having lived for 10 years in another country you also start feeling that country as your own.
Anyways, my complain was more about American films in general than any other thing. The fact is that it is very hard to avoid American crappy films, because many of them make it outside the US, which is very different from what happens with movies from .... say Spain or Canada or France or any other country.
Concerning Canada, yep there is a bunch of good Canadian films, but many of them have been out-competed and erased from the box office by the American ones. That's why most of the good Canadian films that make it outside the country are in French.

Not surprised. Heard "Twilight" also sucked.
Well, not surprising either, considering the fact that it's based off a series of books written for the sake of being sold. Stephanie Meyer is a sell-out. :P
Sorry if I offended anyone's taste, but I honestly find this to be the truth about Meyer and her books.

Hey folks,

I watched "Pan's Labyrinth" and I must admit that I didn't quite like it. It's probably very artistic and everything, but it's too gloomy and violent for my taste. I'm not talking of action-movie-violence here which is just plain stupid fun; I'm talking of crippled-soul-violence which calls up my hatred. I wanted to kill that stepfather and send him to a hell where he can continue that lifestyle of his for all eternity without bothering any real humans. And that final scene didn't make up for all those horrors because I didn't feel any cordiality in that court scene.

Besides all that I haven't discovered the slightest trace of a hint as to why that creature is called "Pan" or even "a Pan".

I was curious about this movie, but it's not my cup of tea...

Cheers!

Markus

Prince of Persia

Well, what can I say. It's surely  better than Robin Hood. Story is at points predictable but I think it has a very good turning point at the end. Relaxing movie, still not boring or without action, it's probably just that lately we've seen so many such movies that it's hard to say we actually saw something new on screen.
It's made after pc game, as far as I know they got the story and everything very well.
Worth checking out!  :)

From what I've heard, they modified the story heavily as to try to fit all the main things out of the three parts of the story from the Sands of Time trilogy (recently became a quadralogy) (Sands of Time - Forgotten Sands (released like a week ago) - Warrior Within - Two Thrones).
I yet have to watch it, but I'm pretty sure that I'll come out of the cinema saying "...Yep... The games were better".

I finally watched Avatar, it was pretty good in terms of visual effects, but the story is extremely predictable.
I also watched Prince of Persia and enjoyed it. Very well done movie. Departed a lot from the games, but that Prince of Persia essence was still there.
And today I watched Nightmare on Elm Street and didn't enjoy it too much. Crappy story, some laughable CG (by current standards) and other stuff that just made a lot of people in the theater laugh their heads off throughout a movie that was supposed to be scary.

I still don't understand why do people persist in making crappy remakes of classic horror movies. First, was The Omen, then Carrie, and now this one. Jeezzzz, let the mighty Cthulhu eat 'em all for their lack of imagination... :cht:

About three weeks ago, I watched a 1960's black-and-white Soviet documentary on Fascism, Hitler and Nazi Germany called Ordinary Fascism. I watched it in its original language, which meant none of the original words and texts used to make the film were changed or misinterpreted. Honestly, it's fascinating that it holds the whole "Nazis and Fascism were evil" kind of crap we've heard for over the past 70 years, but this has it's own touch of Soviet ideologies placed into it. At the same time, it's a film that harshly criticizes absolute rule of any kind, but focuses most on Hitler's regime more than any other. However, you don't need to put much thought that it could also be seen as an attack on the authoritarian regime of Stalin, thus meaning that such a movie as this could have not been possible during Stalin's lifetime after the war.

About two weeks ago, I checked out The A-Team. I must say that it wasn't the most intelligent film I've ever watched, and it included the archetypal characters that Liam Neeson and Mr. T usually portray, but it surely did its job of being serious and having that military-esque feeling, while being goofy and comedic at a lot of points.

I watched District 9 for a second time, and loved it again. And Christopher Johnson is unquestionably awesome. :cht:

Also, last night I watched A Clockwork Orange... Man, that was a messed up film, definitely not suitable for kids :afaid:. It's get everything you don't want your kids (if you have any) to pick up, including that funky manner of speech and accent. But it was at least mildly entertaining, and holding a very true message about human nature.

And tonight, I finally watched V for Vendetta. It's been ages since it's been released and I thought it a sin that I hadn't watched it yet. And man, I loved this one too. I mean, Natalie Portman was smoking hot throughout most of the movie  and I loved the whole concept. It gives us a glance of what kind of world we live in.

Hey, Markus!
I watched Pan's Labyrinth quite a while ago, and in general I did like it (because it's, as you said, artistic and everythig ;D ). But yes, it is very violent, and no I wouldn't usually like that kind of a movie, but because it's so well done and it actually makes you feel the story, I give it a thumb up.

Speaking of the creature, yeah, I haven't got that either. Maybe because they made him look a bit like a Pan, or a faun, which stands in the original, although I don't see a resemblence with that creature apart from the horns and the legs. But since he's not a real character (he's in the girl's mind as a consequence of the things that have been happening...or at least I would say, makes sense though), maybe he's there as such because there's a legend in that place, and the girl knows it and therefore connects it with everything. Wouldn't know the real answer.

Sorry Markus, I missed Your post about Pan's Labyrinth.
Thank You for telling us - I have to say that the movie is one of my favourites, but still, I don't want to watch it again anymore. :)
It's easy - in my opinion, this is what del Torro wanted us to feel like. He wanted us to hate such a terrible person as her step father.
Anytime I think of that - it reminds me of th terrible era of Hitler's time. The fascist and nazis all around.

Yes, it was very violent in the most psychical way - but this is very common in Hispan movies.

I saw it last Thursday too. But I don't have that good opinion about it. Sorry guys.
I think it was ... hard to explain... it was directed, cut and such imho in too short time, like if they were in a big hurry so some places are really not well done. And even though I really don't like DiCaprio in face, he's great actor, but here? He can do much better  -_-

You've got a point here Miji. He can do far better than that, but still.... I liked the storyline of the film
About the rush, and some places not well done, I don't know yet. I did perceive some inconsistencies here and there (the pursuit in the snow, for instance), but I'll have to watch it again (as I usually do with the movies I like) in order to make my head about it. :)

I watched Predators tonight...
It was bad. Not just your regular type of bad, but the type of bad that is full of clichés with pretty much flat and stereotypical characters you always see in action movies (like having the African guy that carries an AK-47 and that has the bad fortune of dying first, a tough Latina chick, a Russian heavy weapons guy with an accent, an East Asian that wears a suit, uses a pistol and is skilled with a sword, and a "nerdy" guy that turns out to be a psycho killer), predictable story, predictable moments.
So unless you're going to watch it to laugh at how mediocre it is (or to see green blood) steer clear.

Last seen...

Pit and the Pendulum (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055304/) based on Poe's well known story :D Good movie, starring Vincent Price. Worth watching. Well made.
House of Usher (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053925/) based on the Poe's Fall of The House of Usher, I wasn't impressed because the story was pretty changed, but there was Vincent Price in it so... :D :D :D
House on the Haunted Hill (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0051744/) again, one of the Vincent Price's movies :D:D Good one, at times scared the hell out of me, but then again, I get scared way too easily. Thought the ending was epic though.
And for the end...
Casablanca (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0034583/) good movie, romantic in its essence, but I'm not too impressed...expected more from it, especially since it's so big and famous. Could be better, but still, worth watching.

Last night I watch "The Steam Experiment", a kind of thriller where a mad scientist locks 6 people (3 men and 3 women) in a steam room. At the beginning I thought that it was going to be a total crap, and was waiting for some serious laughs before going to bed. However, the film turned to be descent enough to keep my interest until the end. It is not necessarily a good movie, but well, when you are expecting something really, really bad, it does surprise you a couple of times. To watch at your own risk, and only if there is no descent football on t.v. :nosweat:

The fourth kind with Milla Jovovich
Many people hated this film when it was out last year, but I think that it's not that bad. It's a science-fiction-horror movie made as a "fakumentary" on the possible abductions that have occurred in a small town in Alaska. Just perfect for a week-end night in which you don't wanna use your brain. Avoid if you are feeling deep and philosophical.
He-he-he, as a side note, I have to say that this film took me back to my old Hypocrisy albums... which is always welcome, especially given that they are touring Mexico in a few weeks :nana: .

Pretty good. It's a bit overrated, but it's still a pretty damn good movie.

BURIED (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1462758/)

Imagine a Spanish movie, as the director is Spanish, shot in a city near Barcelona. Imagine only one actor, and only one scenario. The actor is american, Ryan Reynolds, and he lives the 90 minutes of the movie inside a coffin. A buried coffin. Only one movile phone with half battery, and a lighter. Imagine you can't take your eyes off the screen for all the movie. Imagine...

I know this movie has been distributed very well... if you think that Spanish movies tend to be confined to Spain. I know it had a lot of good critics. And I know that you must watch it, if you know any cinema where it's shown... Unless you're claustrophobic. Then, DO NOT watch it  :ninja:

Ooh! I love that actor! But a lighter inside a coffin? Doesn't that mean that the guy would be left without oxygen within minutes...or even seconds?  :spock:

Ok, ok... you got the "error" of the movie before watching it
But if you forget this little error (and a few little more), I promise that the movie deserves be watched.  :nana:

The shot was all in two weeks, in Cornellá de Llobregat (more or less 10 km near my hometown   , and very near Barcelona city). It's strange how a Spanish director shot with an American actor and in English language (good or bad, all or almost all the cinemas here show it dubbed into Spanish, as usual), and he had so good ciritics. I can say it's not a perfect movie, but really good.
soooo good although it was made with so few resource, and it has so a good plot and good performance by the ONLY actor there.

Have I said you must watch it?

Sounds good to me. Thanks for the tip, Luth, I'll look for it, see if I can catch it somewhere on this side of the pond.
Oh! and about shooting in English, I guess it's because there are producers who like to make sure that their films are going to be shown in other places in the world. Amenabar has done that a couple of times I believe.... but anyway it's always better to have a good film in any language that a bad one in English.

Oooh, "The Colour of Magic"! Haven't seen any of the movies based on Pratchett's work. As I understand it, they're not half bad. Some are even good.

The last movie I saw was "Wilde (http://www.imdb.com/media/rm2357894144/tt0120514)" (1997).

Unsurprisingly, it's about the life (and work) of Oscar Wilde. He's wonderfully portrayed by Stephen Fry.

The truth is rarely pure and never simple.

Wilde is a good movie indeed, I watched it quite a while ago. They couldn't have chosen a better actor to portray Oscar, imho.

As for me, I just finished watching Inception a minute ago. I had to see it since everyone's all crazy about it, and I've gotten a hundred of recommendations considering that movie. I did doubt the quality and everything I must admit, especially after everyone's gone all crazy for Avatar (which is a shitty movie, but everyone seems to love it), however, I found the movie quite good and enjoyable. What I loved in particular is how you're sure about everything the whole time until the end of the movie, which just...makes you question everything. What a mindfuck (pardon my French). What a mindfuck.

I saw the friday the movie Paranormal Activity 2. I don´t go frecuently to the cinema, so I did not read the preview and synopsis of the movie. I have to say I hate the fucking dolby sound system, it makes my ears almost bleed, too much noise for me, and you know in thriller-horror-suspense movies the sounds are the fear factor, so I was very stressed during all the movie haha. I did not like it at all, too sissy for me. I´m waiting for Harry Potter 7 instead ;D

Watched Tim Burton's Ed Wood. Again. What a great movie.
I realized I've already written about that movie here, so I'm not gonna do it again, instead, I'll quote myself just to repeat the awesomeness of the movie and Ed Wood himself.

Quote
It's a story of the worst movie director of all times (or so he was proclaimed). I liked the movie so much; it left such a big impression on me. Ed Wood seems to have been a great person, he had such a great passion, but he reminded me of what Oscar Wilde said about true poets. He said that true poets were bad artists, because they lived the poetry which they didn't know how to write down, while good artists were bad poets, because they wrote poetry which they didn't know to live.
I think he was one of those. Good poet, so to say.
I must say that this is one of the better movies I've seen. Might as well be my favorite.
I'd recommend this movie to all of you who still haven't seen it (just for the record, the movie is black and white...which kind of contributes to the atmosphere...makes it better).
Ah, what an inspiring movie.

Well, in the meanwhile I've seen some of his movies (Glen or Glenda, Plan 9 from Outer Space), and yes they're terrible, but it's the love for his work that makes those movies precious.

Editor: You forgot the octopus.
Ed: No, no, I'm saving that for my big underwater climax!

Every time I see that movie I get the urge to film something. Anything.

Well, in the meanwhile I've seen some of his movies (Glen or Glenda, Plan 9 from Outer Space), and yes they're terrible, but it's the love for his work that makes those movies precious.
Also the rubber gravestones, blatant disregard for day/night transitions, catastrophic acting slip-ups... :D

Hm, the more I think about it, the more it seems mr. Wood influenced me more than I'd care to admit (http://www.koalicija.net/hamsterz/Smileys/koulishn/redface1.gif)

Today I finally saw "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_Pilgrim_vs._the_World)" (http://www.koalicija.net/hamsterz/Smileys/koulishn/cerek.gif)

From the guy that brought us "Hot Fuzz" and "Shaun of the Dead" (also wonderful movies) comes this adaptation of a surreal coming-of-age romantic musical beatemup graphic novel. Beautiful stuff.

It's shiny, fluffy and bizzare. Just the way I like 'em (http://www.koalicija.net/hamsterz/Smileys/koulishn/cerek.gif)

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I

I've already read all the books ( ), and for now, I can say it's the movie I like more. I suppose it has something to do the fact that one book has been explained in two long movies, so less things are left out of the film. Besides that, I think it's a good movie with a lot of emotion and good visual effects. To see only if you already have seen the previous six (or read the books).

A strange thing happens: I have read the books in English, and the movies are dubbed so Spanish. So, some names I knew by their original English name, now sound weird to me because they are in Spanish  :fish:

Good call. "Inception" was immensely enjoyable. An action movie I can get behind.

Well, a director I can get behind.

Speaking of directors I can get behind non-sexually, but just barely, I'm looking for any and/or all of the movies Ephraim Kishon made. Love that man. When I found out he was also a director, I hastened to the Internets in hope to find where I could get a hold of his work. Alas, twas not to be. The Internets are all out of Kishon. Does anyone have any ideas where I might find these movies?

Does anyone know a filmophile in Israel? ;D

Haven't seen any myself, but from the clips I've seen and from what I've read, Kishon's movies are like his books - critiques and satires, so I expect nothing short of awesomeness :)

No idea which movies Kishon directed, but I love him as well! Even had the luck to see him at a reading session several (well, many) years ago.
Uuu, awesome!

According to Wikipedia, Kishon directed 5 movies:
"Sallah Shabati" (1964), "Ervinka" (1967), "Blaumilch Canal "(1969), "Ha-Shoter Azoulay", also known as "The Policeman" (1971), and "The Fox in the Chicken Coop" (1978).

Even got an Oscar nomination for "The Policeman".

As I understand it, the best chance I've got at finding his movies lies in the German localized versions (like "Blaumilch Canal", which isn't the original name). Which if fine, but I'd rather watch them in the original Klingon.

Okay, so on this Thursday I had the most traumatic cinematric experience ever. In my life. I'm totally serious. It was so bad that I'll have to warn all of you: do not even consider seeing this crap!

So, I got an invitation from a friend for a free screening of some Portuguese speaking movie (I didn't even know if it was Brazilian or Portuguese) that was organised by the LGBT branch of Amnesty International at the Central European University. "Sounds lovely" - I thought, some independent gay themed movie, such films I have seen so far have been pretty good with either being funny or thought-provoking, so why not. I even wanted to invite Lucy cause she lives next door, but that didn't happen at the end. Lucy, you can be thankful for that. :lol3:

The title was Do Começo ao Fim, (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1440741/) meaning "From Beginning to End", and it turned out be a Portuguese movie about incest between half brothers. Yeah, you've read it right. The worst thing however was not this pretty wild theme, but the fact that it lacked everything that could have made it more than just a WTF experience. It was completely superficial and sentimental, lacked a regular plot, actors, sensible dialogues and drowned itself into slow-motion scenes about impossibly happy, rich, beautiful, fit, tanned, and completely fake people running around on Brazilian beaches in speedos or bikinis (annoying wannabe-artsy cheesy string music attached)... The whole thing was so dumb that I'm really having a hard time explaining it, there was no drama, no reality, no conflict, just plain dumbness that completely got sickening, especially at the scene where the two brothers started making out on the day of their mother's funeral. What the hell, "Mummy's dead, but we're still so full of love, let's have sleazy gay sex?", I mean WHAT THE SERIOUSLY CONFUSED F**K?! The movie did nothing, just idealized this twisted relationship and wanted to convince you in these very cheap ways - hey, the whole family is accepting it, and come on look how hot they are, it surely can't be bad, we're even gonna include some nude scenes!

I might be wrong, but what they would have needed was a psychologyst because such things (like you fall in love with your own brother whom you've been growing up with) do not happen without some serious traumas.

But even if we accept this politically correct message that there was nothing wrong in their life and they lived happily ever after without any harm to anyone (yeah, right)... it still was the biggest waste of time in my life.

great movie with good actors. I usually hate seeing famous actors in good movies where you should pay attention to the story in stead of them  :shifty: but Rachel Weiss did ok not to add too much of her personality to the character. They did twisted things in the end but sticking to the real story would have probably made a horror movie out of it.

I had a blockbuster holydays this x-mas and watched Harry Potter 7-I and Social Network.
The first one is fine. Lots of action, nice visual effects and much a more "mature" film than the previous ones. It won't change my life, but it was OK for a day with nothing else to do.
The second one was a lot better than I was expecting. The story is pure deja-vu: an issue of money and suing around a good idea that gives a lot of money. However, the really strong points of the film are the performance of Jesse Eisenberg (playing the main character) and the way the story is told. It catches your attention even if your are not interested in Facebook and all the bullshit around it (like me). It didn't change my life either (thank Notessomes!) but I had a good time watching it, which is pretty cool given than I was dragged in by force after making my g.f. watch Harry Potter the day before :nosweat: .

Hey folks,

I've watched "Knowing" with Nicholas Cage recently. Mmmhhhh... annoying soundtrack, annoying characters (Cage is being such an idiot, the way he treats his parents, sister and even his son), annoyingly fast solution. I mean, that "scientist" which Cage is playing sees the list of numbers and immediately has the right idea for their interpretation. There's not a single wrong attempt, not a single dead-end-approach. But the atmosphere of the movie is nicely gloomy and it has a nicely done "end of the world through fire" sequence towards the end (followed by an annoyingly kitschy vision of an alien paradise).

Oh, and I've watched "Inception". Yeah, it's fun and it even seems that they did some research on dreams. A dream-like atmosphere, even though the settings are much too stable for dreams. But then again you can't make a movie of a dream without driving the audience insane, can you? Well done, enough suspense (mainly in the story of Leo & his wife) - but somehow it lacks that final little bit to make me go "whoa!"

Cheers!

Markus

Recently watched a handful of movies.

Jennifer's Body - Movie was total garbage; Megan Fox can't act, all the appeal in the movie is the eye candy that she provides. It's a cheap horror movie that fails to get you scared.

Idiocracy - A brilliant satire by Mike Judge (creator of Beavis and Butt-head) of where we're headed with the current trends in society and culture. I highly suggest it.

Brighton Rock - Sophisticated for the viewer used to American cinema, but good nevertheless. A good BBC crime drama about the downfall of a young up-and-starting gangster.

Henry's Crime - Enjoyable. I liked the fact that Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard is often referenced, cited and even performed as a part of the film.

Super 8 - Not a bad movie, but overall... The plot wasn't precisely what I unexpected... And the title remains a mystery, unless it refers to 8mm film.

Lately we watched all Star Trek movies (I think except the last one)...

From TV series we are watching Castle, The Big Bang Theory (really worth it if You know the usual nerd whereabouts) - it's easy funny show and I enjoy that.

Yesterday I started watching show Once Upon A Time and now I am watching the last episode - I mean one which is out last... on 12th February there's coming new episode. It's really strange show. Half happening in "real" life and half in the fairytale land. In some moments it's really naive (fairytalish :D ) and digital tricks are sometimes pretty poor but there are two really nice women in the show as main characters and I sorta started to like the show.

Also I plan to start watching "Weeds" and "Breaking Bad" another TV shows. Both are supposed to be good so far.

And I forgot - I also lately checked second Space Odyssey. Great stuff :-) I have to read the book and finally finish all of the books actually.

Iron Sky

It is from the Star Wreck creators and it is awesome. You can't expect typical American movie, of course. It is typical crazy Finnish. It is about Nazis from The Dark Side of the Moon...

I wanted to ask then - Markus, is this movie in cinemas/TV in Germany? Cause this piece is pretty much politically incorrect (still can't believe that North Korea  did not claim nuclear war against Finland). I think that Germany is dealing well with its past so I believe it is shown in cinemas in Germany but my friend believes otherwise... Can You please tell me?
I believe that the only reason why it should not be in cinemas in Germany is the fact that it is not  American "mega-awesome-movie" type.

Dear Kris,

I've read about this movie being shown in German cinemas, so I guess it's shown here. Why shouldn't it? Only promoting ultra right-wing or even NS ideas is forbidden here. Whether it's my kind of humour is a different question...

For instance, there was a movie named "Mein Führer" with Helge Schneider, a famous German nonsense-comedian as Hitler. That one sparked discussion, but in my opinion it was a rather intelligent movie.

Cheers!

About the Iron Sky movie... Well, it is humorous but I do not think that overall it is making fun of what happend. I think they used it as a bridge for few points which I am not sure everybody will get. Depends on the viewer, of course, as well as with any other movie :)

Hm, I haven't heard about that movie so far. I might check it out :)

And they are listening to...

DAGON

This is an adaption of "The Shadow over Innsmouth" from 2001 by a director named Stuart Gordon. The movie is supported by some Catalan culture / movie institute and it relocates the story to a Spanish coast town named "Imboca" (Imboca? Get it? :lol3:).

Yeah, it's more of a B-movie. Most of the deep ones are too zombie-like for my taste, having them acting like normally intelligent people would create a deeper horror. And they don't take much time to create suspense, the horror begins rather quickly. But it's well done and worth seeing! It doesn't retell the story but you'll find all the essential elements - which I like a lot better than a mere retelling. When watching it, look out for insider-jokes like the sweater the hero is wearing. :lol3:

The above is dialogue takes place when the creepy priestess of Dagon explains to the hero why his girlfriend should be, well, taken by Dagon in a sacrifice ceremony. He's not quite convinced yet and bursts out: "Fuck Dagon!", to which she replies with bright eyes: "Yes! And the child will be immortal" - so happy that he finally understood her. :lol3:

Ia! Ia! Cheers!

Yesterday I went to the cinema to see this movie: LORE (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1996310/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1)

I have to say that I did not expect it to be that good and so ... authentic? Nothing is really nice there, it is a movie without embellishments.
I appreciate a lot that someone made a film that shows it from the other side. I am quite sure that there were some documents, maybe books made about the way how it was with the children of the officers after the WWII.

Quite a strong movie.

Thank you for this tip, Kris!

The reviews at the page you linked to are going in the same direction, calling it a movie that keeps your mind busy for a long time. I'll see if I can get my hands on it!

Cheers!

I think it is surely worth seeing. Here it is shown only in the "independent" cinemas of course.

It is raw and quite psychological - you can see the development in the main character - Lore. How she's fighting the fact that she has to trust a Jew and that she depends on him in a way. It's just so unusual to see this point of view so as I never read anything or saw about this point of view, I appreciate it a lot.

So she has to question something that she used to view as a fixed truth, and thus has to question those who taught this "truth" her? Including her parents and whatnot?

Yes, and not only her. There are few scenes where you can see that the allied forces glued to the walls posters with pictures from the Auschwitz and other camps with words like: You share responsibility. And so on.
Then there is a scene from a train where the Germans play cards and they talk about how this cannot be truth that the photograph are surely fake and that the people on them (the skinny Jews and other uncomfortable people on the borderline between life and death, also the mass graves etc...) are just Schauspieler.

I can quite imagine that to them it had to seem that the allied forces fabricated this to make the "Führer" seem as a monster etc.

Just arrived from watching GRAVITY in 3D. I usually prefer the normal, 2D version, but this time I've made an exception. Perhaps the plot is not the most important (in fact, there are some important flaws), but the views are... feeeeeew....  :wOOt:

Markus, the movie is very good. The day you or someone tells me have seen it, I'll tell the big error they did (or two big errors, I daresay). It's a pity, as I think they take great credibility to the plot. The movie deserves to be watched, nevertheless!  :ninja:

Btw... yesterday I watched "Metallica: Through The Never". I finally found a cinema where the time was more "decent": instead of 1.30 a.m., 20.50 p.m. A lot better in my opinion!! Really good movie, but only to Metallica fans. It's a concert (not a whole concert, though), plus a little crazy plot. If you don't like Metallica, the secondary plot won't make you like the movie. If you like Metallica, the concert in 3D and the great views you can have of the concert will make your day!

Eya Luth,

you're saying the very same about both movies that I've read in reviews - which I take as a sign that the reviews were decent. :)

Cheers!
