Hi all
Looks like a great forum. Lots of input
Myself, I am a bit dated and grew up obsessed with bands like Black sabbath, RUSH, Judas Priest, Saga and ...well , you get it.
Kinda got out of the music scene in my late twenties, had a kid and became a family man with no time to keep up with what was going on in the metal world.
When my son was 13 I tossed him an old cheap electric guitar I had in the basement and I told him to do something constructive with it. He whined for a few days and told me there was no way he would play the guitar as his hands were to small and his fingers were to fat.
I showed him how to read a tab and left him alone. A few months later he convinced his grandfather to let him play at the Church talent show.....yes I said Church....
So the little 6 yr old girl in the pink dress completed her rendition of "yes Jesus loves me" and the congregation clapped. Once the clapping stopped, Christian (my son)was introduced and I have never felt so stressed in my life. I had no idea what he was going to play and I had advised his grandfather that he was nowhere near ready to play in front of people and that if he choked, that would be the last time he would get on stage.
Well, with the remnants of the previous cute little 6 yr old still fresh in everyones mind, Christian plugged in his guitar, cranked the volume and pounded out a Mettalica song .I must admit I dont remember what song it was because I was in complete shock. He finished the song minus any solo as he had only been playing for 3 months and he got a standing ovation. I was in the back peeing myself laughing.
So now that he is 15, I hear death growls coming from his bedroom and wonder what the hell is he listening to. Definately not my preference. Well, being a responsible parent and ready to educate him on the difference between music and crap noise, he throws me Opeth BlackWater Park and Watershed cd's and asks me to listen to it. So..for the sake of maintaining the child...parent bond, I listen to it.
So long story short (your lucky) I immediately bought tickets to Opeth here in Saskatoon on the 30th and can hardly wait.
So thats my Story and my Midlife Crisis
Cheers

Hi bengal,
first of all... WELCOME!!! :welcome:
I'm happy to see that new blood comes... You will see our forum is not a standard one, but a very special one... a little crazy, a bit mad, a lot funny, and with loads of great people! :yeha: I'm glad to have more fellows by here
Your history has made me laugh a lot, and to read very interestingly: it seems you perfectly fit here!! (you and your son, I daresay :innocent: ).
Please, feel free to read, to write, to post, to start topics, to avoid hungry anglerfishes, to start some revolutions... you know, the normal things in a forum
Btw... I see you are Canadian; I think you're the first one (am I wrong? ).
Oh... and a little question... if you don't mind to reply... how did you know about us? :nosweat:
-
Hi Bengal,
yes indeed, I think you'll fit in here very well. :welcome:
Oh, and that's a fine example of responsible parenting. Take that another step further and notessomise your kid. :wink2: Besides that do all the things Luth told you, but otherwise don't trust her. She may be our queen, but she's an evil queen... :ninja:
I hope to read a lot from you. :)
Cheers!
Markus

Welcome to our forum!
I see your parenting story is quite the right one, I wish my dad was as much into this type of music as I am... I'm pretty much the only Metalhead in the family. Your son is a lot like myself, so tell him join our little forum.... I might need a lead guitarist in my band.
-
Yeah Bengal! Be very welcome :)
I enjoyed your story XD! I hope this is not temporary and we see more and more of you in the next days, months, years and years and years and years and years and
years and years and years and years and years years and years and years and years and years years and years and years and years and years years and years and years and years and years years and years and years and years and years years and years and years and years and years years and years and years and years and years years and years and years and years and years years and years and years and years and years years and years and years and years and years years and years and years and years and years years and years and years and years and years

Sooo... we have a new Canadian, hein?
:welcome: Bengal.
It was nice to read your story, and it would be more than a pleasure to contribute to your metal education in everyway we can :wink2:
I lived in Canada ...well, in [coughs] Quebec [/coughs] for ten years. My g.f. is Canadian, and well, I supose that I'll have to go back there sooner or later. Never been to Saskatoon though.
It's nice to have you here. Please post as much as you want, and give us alcohol and food as often as we wish.
